The International Organizations Funding Directory is an invaluable guide to the booming third sector, as well as a record of the undertakings of the major international organizations. Each major international organization is profiled in its own chapter, where its subordinate sections, institutions, departments and directorates will feature, along with the projects they run in partnership with important local, national or international NGOs. Projects included are those run in collaboration with local, national or international NGOs, which are influential on a national or international scale. Projects are included in any area of NGO activity, including: development aid; rural development; environment and conservation; women's empowerment; civil society promotion; medicine and health; culture and art; economic reform; education and human rights. Each entry, where relevant, includes information on the following: name and aims of the organization, department or project; activities; geographical area of activity; financial information (grants disbursed); restrictions (e.g. project run in certain area, no grants to individuals, grants made through a specific NGO, etc.); how to apply for funding; publications; and principal staff. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, multi-bi financing has become a significant source of funding for international development organizations. This paper discusses how multi-bi financing channeled through trust funds shapes the organizational practices of multilateral agencies, using evidence from a large number of interviews conducted at the World Bank. The analysis covers seven issue areas, including differences in the portfolio allocation of trust funds and core resources, potential for misalignment with development needs, donor influence upon agency operations, recovery of maintenance costs, long-term budget implications, transaction costs and administrative burdens, and institutional fragmentation inside the organization.

Book Non Governmental Organizations Management and Development

Download or read book Non Governmental Organizations Management and Development written by David Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Governmental Development Organizations have seen turbulent times over the decades; however, recent years have seen them grow to occupy high-profile positions in the fight against poverty. They are now seen as an important element of ‘civil society’, a concept that has been given increasing importance by global policy makers. This book has evolved during the course of that period to be a prime resource for those working (or wishing to work) with and for NGOs. The third edition of Non-Governmental Organizations, Management and Development is fully updated and thoroughly reorganized, covering key issues including, but not limited to, debates on the changing global context of international development and the changing concepts and practices used by NGOs. The interdisciplinary approach employed by David Lewis results in an impressive text that draws upon current research in non-profit management, development management, public management and management theory, exploring the activities, relationships and internal structure of the NGO. This book remains the first and only comprehensive and academically grounded guide to the issues facing international development NGOs as they operate in increasingly complex and challenging conditions around the world. It is the perfect resource for students undertaking studies of NGOs and the non-profit sector, in addition to being an excellent resource for development studies students more generally.

Book The Multilateral Aid Review

Download or read book The Multilateral Aid Review written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report finds that the multilateral aid review is a significant step towards the Department being able to improve the value for money from its spending through these organisations which totalled £3.6 billion in 2011-12. The Department's 2011 review, which assessed 43 organisations, was a more thorough and comprehensive process than previous assessments. The review was valuable: both for providing accountability to UK taxpayers and for promoting reform in the multilateral organisations themselves. It enabled the Department to show international leadership. The review rated nine organisations as 'very good' value for money for UK aid, 16 as 'good', nine as 'adequate' and nine as 'poor'. Funding to those organisations it rated as 'good' or 'very good' will increase from 74 per cent of the total in 2010-11 to 77 per cent in 2014-15 and fund for four of those it rated as 'poor' value will cease. However, international agreements limit the extent to which the Department can change its funding. It is important, therefore, that it has co-ordinated, up-to-date plans on how it will use the review to drive performance improvements in each organisation. While the assessment framework compared well with recognized models for assessing value for money in organisations, the guidance to assessors did not always ensure consistency and some organisations found it difficult to fulfill all the evidence requirements. Organisations rated as 'very good' did not need to meet a minimum set of standards and their cost-effectiveness was not always compared to alternative delivery methods
