Download or read book Water Policy in Mexico written by Hilda R. Guerrero García Rojas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico is currently facing severe problems with water availability, wastage and contamination. The most contaminated and over-exploited water resources are concentrated in the most populated areas of the country, where water is scarcer and its quality makes it unsuitable for a variety of uses, including human consumption. At the same time it is indisputable that water quality is a determining factor in public health and ecosystems. The significant growth in population and industry results in a high demand for water, along with contaminating discharges, few of which are treated – and the impact upon the ecosystems is evident. This book addresses all these topics in a single volume, taking into account the challenges presented by the economic, institutional and environmental considerations in Mexico’s water policy framework.
Download or read book Soil Management and Conservation for Small Farms written by Valdemar Hercilio de Freitas and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is intended for development practitioners This report is intended for development practitioners, extensionists and leaders or pioneers in farming communities, to inform them about the experiences and initiatives of farming communities in conservation agriculture in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, there have been widespread improvements in soil management. This has led to lower costs and improved returns combined with better conservation and soil resources. The main elements of success were minimum tillage, soil cover management and direct seeding practices, together with an effective and creative extension service. While these developments probably cannot be duplicated as such elsewhere, the methods and strategies may well inspire others to adapt and modify them for application in their own environments elsewhere, the methods and strategies may well inspire others to adapt and modify them for application in their own environments.
Download or read book Management of Semi Arid Ecosystems written by B.H. Walker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive regions of the world have a climate which, whilst permitting development of a continuous vegetative cover, is too dry for successful annual cropping. These are the semi-arid areas where land use is based on the natural vegetation. Easily degraded and difficult to maintain, they are under increasing pressure as expanding human populations move in and endeavour to force a living from them. As a result they contain some of the worst examples of resource degradation. This book examines the problems and opportunities involved in man's use of semi-arid areas. The authors are all actively involved in research and land management in the areas discussed. Each chapter begins with a detailed, up-to-date account of the ecology of the region (its climate, soils, vegetation, fauna and main ecological characteristics). This is followed by a history of land use, problems involved in its management, a review of current research and recommended land use practices. The common features of semi-arid ecosystems are brought together in a final section.

Download or read book Water and Society II written by C.A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing the proceedings of the Second International Conference on the title topic, the book examines issues related to the nature of water, and its use and exploitation by society. Since ensuring an adequate water supply is becoming a critical issue in more and more countries, the conference brings together specialists from the social sciences and humanistic disciplines and the physical and natural sciences, biology, environmental sciences, and health to bridge gaps between the disciplines in addressing the problem. The international, interdisciplinary nature of the conference participants makes it possible to arrive at equitable solutions to the many transnational issues, relating to the rights of states, which arise around water supply. The book discusses: The nature of water; Water as a human right; Water as the source of life; Water in a changing climate; Future water demands and adaptation strategies; Water resources contamination; Water resources management; Irrigation and desertification; Water, sanitation and health; Transnational water rights; Legislation and controls; Lessons to be learnt; Water and disaster management.

Download or read book Water Resources in Mexico written by Úrsula Oswald Spring and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources in Mexico are threatened by scarcity, pollution and climate change. In two decades water consumption doubled, producing water stress in dry seasons and semi-arid and arid regions. Water stress rises due to physical and economic stress. In seven parts a multidisciplinary team analyzes hydrological processes in basins and their interaction with climate, soil and biota. Competing water use in agriculture, industry and domestic needs require savings, decontamination processes and desalination to satisfy the growing demand. Water quality affects health and ecosystems. This creates conflicts and cooperation that may be enhanced by public policy, institution building and social organization.
Download or read book Agrobiodiversity Community Participation and Landscapes in Agroecology written by Tomás Enrique León-Sicard and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining and managing agrobiodiversity is a key issue proposed by agroecology, not only to maintain high agricultural productivity, but also to increase the resilience, stability and sustainability of the agroecosystems, meant as the functional relationship between the natural assets and the human use of them, at farm and farm matrix scale. The main hypothesis of this approach is that, the greater the interactions between organisms of different trophic levels (edaphic organisms, multiple crops, weed plants, herbivores, carnivores, plants in living fences, corridors or forest patches within agroecosystems), the greater will be the possibilities of obtaining abundant and varied harvests, with fewer external inputs (pesticides, fertilizers) and better environmental performance. The agrobiodiversity is meant as the variety and the disposition of the cultivations, pastures, farms, that affect the soil properties and create habitat diversity, landscape diversity and connectivity. At the level of landscapes or territories, the set of biodiverse agroecosystems generate natural matrices that have a powerful impact on the recovery and restoration of forest corridors, which, in turn, positively influence many ecosystem services for nature conservation and free movement and recovery of many populations of animal species, including those in danger of extinction.

Download or read book Against the Current Privatization Water Markets and the State in Chile written by Carl J. Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981 Chile's military government dictated a new Water Code that radically changed the country's previous water rights system by strengthening private property rights, favoring market incentives, and reducing state regulation. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile is the first empirical and interdisciplinary study of water markets in Chile, which is the leading international example of free market water policies. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile challenges the glowing reports given by neoliberals in Chile and the World Bank, showing that the results of this economic experiment have actually been rather mixed. Within the agricultural sector the Water Code has worked fairly well, although the market incentives to conserve water have been ineffective and water rights trading has been less active than expected. The Code's impact has been more negative at the level of river basins, where the institutional framework has revealed critical flaws in coordinating multiple water users and resolving conflicts. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile combines law, political economy, and geography to analyze the disadvantages, problems, and wider contexts of water markets. This book will appeal to everyone interested in property rights, market-friendly environmental policies, the political economy of sustainable development, and the intersection of economics with law and institutions.
