Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Organization and Design Fundamentals takes the reader from the basic design principles of the modern digital computer to a top-level examination of its architecture. This book can serve either as a textbook to an introductory course on computer hardware or as the basic text for the aspiring geek who wants to learn about digital design. The material is presented in four parts. The first part describes how computers represent and manipulate numbers. The second part presents the tools used at all levels of binary design. The third part introduces the reader to computer system theory with topics such as memory, caches, hard drives, pipelining, and interrupts. The last part applies these theories through an introduction to the Intel 80x86 architecture and assembly language. The material is presented using practical terms and examples with an aim toward providing anyone who works with computer systems the ability to use them more effectively through a better understanding of their design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been using the first edition of this book as a text for a number of years. This was in a Stanford University first-year graduate course that is taken by students from Electrical Engineering or Computer Science who are interested in computer organization. Because computer tech nology has been changing so rapidly, it became necessary to supplement the text with additional readings. My colleagues and I examined many newly-published books for possible use as texts. We found no book with the same excellent choice of topics and thorough coverage as Dr. Gschwind's first edition. Springer-Verlag's request that I prepare a second edition of this book came at a time when I had many other projects underway. Before I de cided whether to take on the project of preparing a revision, I asked many of my students for their opinions of Dr. Gschwind's first edition. Even I was surprised by the enthusiasm that this rather skeptical and critical group of students displayed for the book. It was this enthusiasm that convinced me of the value and importance of preparing the revision.

Book Theory and Design of Digital Computer Systems

Download or read book Theory and Design of Digital Computer Systems written by T.R. Lewin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge: A little light expels much darkness _ Bahya ibn Paquda, Duties of the Heart During the early 1970s digital computer techniques concentrated on the computational and interfacing aspects of digital systems and the decade began as the age of both the mainframe computer and the minicomputer. Engineers and system designers needed to know the fundamentals of computer operation and how the practical limitations of the architectures of the day, the memory size, cost and performance could be overcome; it was for this reason that this book was first written. By 1980 the microprocessor revolution had arrived. As a result the microprocessor became a component of a system, rather than a system itself, and the need to understand the behaviour of the device became of even greater importance to the system designer. New developments in mainframe computers were few, with networks of minicomputers taking over their role in many instarices. The 1980 revision of this book took into account the major advances in semiconductor technology that had occurred since it was first published in 1972, and included material relevant to the microprocessor.

Book Computer Arithmetic and Verilog HDL Fundamentals

Download or read book Computer Arithmetic and Verilog HDL Fundamentals written by Joseph Cavanagh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 971 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) is the state-of-the-art method for designing digital and computer systems. Ideally suited to describe both combinational and clocked sequential arithmetic circuits, Verilog facilitates a clear relationship between the language syntax and the physical hardware. It provides a very easy-to-learn and practical means to model a digital system at many levels of abstraction. Computer Arithmetic and Verilog HDL Fundamentals details the steps needed to master computer arithmetic for fixed-point, decimal, and floating-point number representations for all primary operations. Silvaco International’s SILOS, the Verilog simulator used in these pages, is simple to understand, yet powerful enough for any application. It encourages users to quickly prototype and de-bug any logic function and enables single-stepping through the Verilog source code. It also presents drag-and-drop abilities. Introducing the three main modeling methods—dataflow, behavioral, and structural—this self-contained tutorial— Covers the number systems of different radices, such as octal, decimal, hexadecimal, and binary-coded variations Reviews logic design fundamentals, including Boolean algebra and minimization techniques for switching functions Presents basic methods for fixed-point addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including the use of decimals in all four operations Addresses floating-point addition and subtraction with several numerical examples and flowcharts that graphically illustrate steps required for true addition and subtraction for floating-point operands Demonstrates floating-point division, including the generation of a zero-biased exponent Designed for electrical and computer engineers and computer scientists, this book leaves nothing unfinished, carrying design examples through to completion. The goal is practical proficiency. To this end, each chapter includes problems of varying complexity to be designed by the reader.

Book AN INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL COMPUTER DESIGN

Download or read book AN INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL COMPUTER DESIGN written by V. RAJARAMAN and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly acclaimed, well established, book now in its fifth edition, is intended for an introductory course in digital computer design for B.Sc. students of computer science, B.Tech. students of computer science and engineering, and BCA/MCA students of computer applications. A knowledge of programming in C or Java would be useful to give the student a proper perspective to appreciate the development of the subject. The first part of the book presents the basic tools and developes procedures suitable for the design of digital circuits and small digital systems. It equips students with a firm understanding of logic principles before they study the intricacies of logic organization and architecture of computers in the second part. Besides discussing data representation, arithmetic operations, Boolean algebra and its application in designing combinatorial and sequential switching circuits, the book introduces the Algorithmic State Machines which are used to develop a hardware description language for the design of digital systems. The organization of a small hypothetical computer is described to illustrate how instruction sets are evolved. Real computers (namely, Pentium and MIPs machines) are described and compared with the hypothetical computer. After discussing the features of a CPU, I/O devices and I/O organization, cache and virtual memory, the book concludes with a new chapter on the use of parallelism to enhance the speed of computers. Besides, the fifth edition has new material in CMOS gates, MSI/ALU and Pentium5 architecture. The chapter on Cache and Virtual Memory has been rewritten.
