Book Fundamentals of Salesmanship

Download or read book Fundamentals of Salesmanship written by Norris A. Brisco and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Salesmanship Industrial growth and business expansion depend largely upon efficient salesmanship. Large quantities of goods must be sold at a profit. It is easier to make goods than to sell them. The salesperson is the leading factor in profit-making and is the most valuable asset in any business. Ignorance, rule of thumb methods and lack of skill are factors increasing costs and inefficiency. Customary ways of doing things are inefficient and wasteful. The selling methods found in the average salesforce are not the result of careful investigation and acquired by careful training, but are what are guessed to be best by management and salespersons. Many managers even today believe that it is a waste of time to study principles underlyring salesmanship, and declare that scientific investigation and the careful study of methods of sale have their place elsewhere than in the selling department of a business. The production of goods on a large scale increased competition in every branch of our industrial system. Many managers began to study salespersons and methods of sale to see if it were possible to devise more efficient methods of selling. This led to a careful analysis of the methods of sale. The result has been the reduction of salesmanship to fundamental principles. The average manager has yet to realize that no sale takes place, unless it is a case of filling orders, which does not involve these fundamental principles. Salesmanship is no longer based upon guesswork, but upon knowledge. The explaining of the fundamental principles underlying salesmanship is the purpose of this book. Book The Selling Process

Download or read book The Selling Process written by Norval Abiel Hawkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selling Process: A Handbook of Salesmanship Principles In 1904 I sold my services as a Certified Public Accountant to Henry Ford and became Auditor of the Ford Motor Company. Three years later I sold myself into the big job of Commercial and General Sales Manager. Then for twelve years I directed the marketing of Ford products all over the world. Our sales were multiplied 132 times - from 6, 181 to 815, 912 cars a year. In selling my personal services and ideas, and in selling goods, I have used a particular selling process. I have learned what sales principles and methods are most effective. That the practice of these principles and methods assures success in selling has been proved, not only in my own wide experience, but also by tests I have made with the thousands of salesmen it has been my privilege to direct as an executive. Many of the best salesmen we had in the Ford Motor Company were developed from flat failures into certain successes by training in the selling process we worked out. More than fifty thousand salesmen and sales managers are using this selling process in their daily work. The present book describing and explaining it is now in the sixth edition; though it was first published only two years ago. Countless numbers of readers have written to me that by studying The Selling Process they have increased their sales power from ten percent to several hundred percent. CHAPTER XXXIV A SALE BEHIND THE COUNTER 33a. Introduction Retail salespeople can be broadly divided into two types-- salesmen and order takers. The order taker merely supplies that for which the customer asks. The salesman adds to the value of the sale the customer intended to make, in* several ways--by selling something better suited to the shopper's needs, by selling larger quantities or a better quality than was originally asked for, or by offering additional merchandise which one naturally associates with the article originally bought. The following sale is presented, as an illustration of the more enterprising method of retail salesmanship. 333- Characters and Setting The scene is a modern drug store. On the left stands the soda fountain beyond which is the candy counter. On the right hand are, first, the cigar counter and then the toilet goods section. At the toilet goods counter two salespeople are in attendance--a young man and a girl. Where possible the young man serves men and the girl supplies the wants of women. Both are busy showing goods when a prosperous looking middle-aged man enters. He has a short-clipped mustache and a clean-shaven jaw. He walks toward the toilet goods counter and, seeing both salespeople busy, hesitates as if undecided whether to wait or to leave the store. Salesman. Good morning, sir. I shall be at liberty in a few moments. Customer. [Nods his head abruptly.] All right. [While waiting he looks through the glass case on the counter at a display of shaving cream in collapsible tubes. Then he picks up a can of talcum powder standing on the top of the case, smells it and puts it down. By this time the salesgirl has finished with her customer, but as the salesman is only waiting for some...
