It might well be used as an Introductory Course in Education in colleges or in College Courses in normal schools. The author has tried to keep in the foreground the function of the elementary school as the greatest single agency in a democracy for the education of its children, and, while no effort has been made to exhaust the topics concerning elementary schools, an attempt has been made to discuss the fundamental ones with considerable detail and thoroughness. Practically all of the "Problems" presented at the end of each chapter may be answered from the subject matter contained in the text, and the experiences of the teacher and students.
