Book Relationship of Processing to Microstructure and Mechanical Properties in Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Relationship of Processing to Microstructure and Mechanical Properties in Metal Matrix Composites written by H. J. Rack and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, research designed to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms controlling the physical and mechanical response of advanced materials, for example, metal and ceramic matrix composites, has been severely hindered by the investigator's inability to procure experimental materials whose prior thermomechanical history is known and well characterized. Conflicting and apparently irreproducible results could, in many instances, have been directly ascribed to a lack of prior processing information. The laboratory facilities established utilizing equipment procured under the subject grant were designed to minimize this obvious shortcoming. In addition, the equipment purchased has been, and continues to be utilized to support a number of research programs of immediate and potential future DoD interest.

Book Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Metal Matrix Composites written by Nikhilesh Chawla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, a significant increase in applications of MMCs has taken place, particularly in the areas of automotive, aerospace, electronics, and recreation. These include continuous fiber reinforced MMCs for cables in power transmission, high temperature superconducting wires, particulate MMCs in civilian aircraft and automotive applications, and high volume fraction, high thermal conductivity substrates for electronic packaging. Nevertheless, as with any novel material systems, there is a lack of fundamental understanding on the part of practicing engineers and designers. This book would seek to address these issues, in a thorough and cohesive manner, as well as to provide students and scientists with a basic understanding of MMCs. This book will emphasize the synergistic relationships among processing, structure, and properties of metal matrix composites.

Book Microstructure And Properties Of Materials Vol 2

Download or read book Microstructure And Properties Of Materials Vol 2 written by James C M Li and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-10-09 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of an advanced textbook on microstructure and properties of materials. (The first volume is on aluminum alloys, nickel-based superalloys, metal matrix composites, polymer matrix composites, ceramics matrix composites, inorganic glasses, superconducting materials and magnetic materials). It covers titanium alloys, titanium aluminides, iron aluminides, iron and steels, iron-based bulk amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline materials. There are many elementary materials science textbooks, but one can find very few advanced texts suitable for graduate school courses. The contributors to this volume are experts in the subject, and hence, together with the first volume, it is a good text for graduate microstructure courses. It is a rich source of design ideas and applications, and will provide a good understanding of how microstructure affects the properties of materials.Chapter 1, on titanium alloys, covers production, thermomechanical processing, microstructure, mechanical properties and applications. Chapter 2, on titanium aluminides, discusses phase stability, bulk and defect properties, deformation mechanisms of single phase materials and polysynthetically twinned crystals, and interfacial structures and energies between phases of different compositions. Chapter 3, on iron aluminides, reviews the physical and mechanical metallurgy of Fe3Al and FeAl, the two important structural intermetallics. Chapter 4, on iron and steels, presents methodology, microstructure at various levels, strength, ductility and strengthening, toughness and toughening, environmental cracking and design against fracture for many different kinds of steels. Chapter 5, on bulk amorphous alloys, covers the critical cooling rate and the effect of composition on glass formation and the accompanying mechanical and magnetic properties of the glasses. Chapter 6, on nanocrystalline materials, describes the preparation from vapor, liquid and solid states, microstructure including grain boundaries and their junctions, stability with respect to grain growth, particulate consolidation while maintaining the nanoscale microstructure, physical, chemical, mechanical, electric, magnetic and optical properties and applications in cutting tools, superplasticity, coatings, transformers, magnetic recordings, catalysis and hydrogen storage.

Book Solidification Processing of Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Solidification Processing of Metal Matrix Composites written by Nikhil Gupta and published by Wiley-TMS. This book was released on 2006-11-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Solidification Processing of Metal Matrix Composites" (MMCs) focuses primarily on microcomposites but also covers macrocomposites, nanocomposites and foams. There are four main areas detailed: fundamentals of solidification synthesis, which examines issues related to stir mixing, pressure infiltration, transfer of particles or fibers through gas-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces, and particle/fiber interactions with fluids; processing and microstructures, which focuses on microstructure formation during solidification of MMC under different conditions, such as nucleation, growth, heat transfer, microsegregation, macrosegregation and interactions between solidifying interfaces, particles and fibers; and, properties of solidification processing, covering the relationship between the microstructures and properties. Comparisons are made between properties of solidification processed composites and monolithic and composites made by solid and vapor phase processes. It also details the application of solidification processed MMCs, revealing current and future applications especially in automotive, aerospace, railroad, thermal management, electromechanical machinery and recreational equipment sectors.
