Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperation in Agriculture The American cooperative movement, even in the oldest cooperative organizations, is in the formative stage. The principles of cooperation are not generally understood, and few persons appreciate the difference between a cooperative organization formed for the benefit of its members, and a corporation formed for pecuniary profit. The so - called cooperative associations in the United States and Canada have usually been formed as corporations for profit, and do not differ in principle from the ordinary stock corporations, although an eflort has often been made by the organizers to conduct them along cooperative lines. The development of the agricultural cooperation move ment needs to be preceded in most of the states by legisla tion that will permit the formation of non-profit cooperative associations or the formation of profit corporations that can be operated legally for the benefit of the members. Book Agricultural Cooperation

Download or read book Agricultural Cooperation written by Martin A. Abrahamsen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1957 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Cooperation was first published in 1957. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Much has been written and published on the general subject of agricultural cooperation, but the material has been scattered and hard to find until now. The volume makes available in convenient form a selection of the most significant articles and excerpts from books, magazines, pamphlets, and other publications. It provides a comprehensive view of the development of farmers' cooperatives in the United States and an evaluation of their relation to the present economy. The 54 articles are by 49 different contributors from various branches of cooperative activity. Among them are professors of agricultural economies, government research experts in agricultural cooperation, officers and members of cooperative organizations, as well as government officials including former Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson and Senators Paul H. Douglas and George D. Aiken. J. K. Stern, president of the American Institute of Cooperation, contributes a foreword. The articles deal significantly with such broad subjects as the economic and social forces that have shaped the development of cooperatives, the place of cooperative organizations in helping to meet the present-day needs of agriculture, and the role of these farmer-owned businesses in the nation's economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Co-Operation and Organisation This book was issued some years before the War as an attempt to show that scientific management and business organisation were needed to bring an adequate amount of produce out of the land. I have now adapted it to the new conditions in the hope that the State may decide to carry through in an orderly and effective manner the development of agriculture. When, two years ago, I sketched in "The State as Farmer" the need for Public Ownership, in view of self-preservation, I relied upon the fact that the student was aware of the details which I had already presented. Those details were originally defined in connection with the efforts which were being made by the Agricultural Organisation Society; for Co-operation is good so far as it goes even in limited applications of the principle. But Co-operation can never become perfect until it is universal, and the universal to be just must be national. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Cooperation, Vol. 5: October 15, 1927 Taking the United States as a whole, the increase in Cooperative activity for the five years was 85 per cent. In some parts of the coun try the percentage increase was considerably greater and in several of the states it amounted to more than ten times that of the entire country. This was largely due to the fact that in certain sections of the United States there had been very little cooperative activity prior to 1919 and about that year many extensive programs Were developed for interesting farmers in collective selling. This was particularly true in the states with large numbers of cotton and tobacco producers. There were also large increases in a number of the states where attention was given to the cc Operative marketing of milk, notably Connecticut. Meredith, Secretary of Agriculture Before the Land-Grand College Association, Springfield, Mass., October 20, 1920 I do not need to remind you gentlemen of the basic importance of research - and I use the word in its most comprehensive sense. It is the foundation of agricul tural progress. Without it many of our agricultural activities couldnot exist under present conditions and others would be seriously crippled. All our most im portant problems along control lines are based on years of patient research. Swine production in a large way is dependent uponhog-cholera control; the cattle industry upon tuberculosis eradication, and in the South upon cattle-tick eradication; the fruit industry upon scien tific methods for the protection of both trees and fruit; many field and truckcrops upon methods of disease control, the introduction and development of new varie ties, and the working out of improved cultural methods and practices.
