Download or read book Fundamental Constants The A Mystery Of Physics written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The speed of light, the fine structure constant, and Newton's constant of gravity — these are just three among the many physical constants that define our picture of the world. Where do they come from? Are they constant in time and across space? In this book, physicist and author Harald Fritzsch invites the reader to explore the mystery of the fundamental constants of physics in the company of Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and a modern-day physicist. The conversation that the three scientists are imagined to have provides an entertaining introduction to the constants and covers topics ranging from atomic, nuclear, and particle physics to astrophysics and cosmology.

Book Theory of universal constants

Download or read book Theory of universal constants written by Khalid Jerrari and published by Khalid Jerrari. This book was released on 2022-09-07 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental laws of physics include fixed numerical parameters called "universal constants". These quantities, determined experimentally and supposed to vary neither in time nor in space, remain one of the greatest mysteries of science. Our current knowledge does not allow us to understand their origin nor to determine them in a theoretical way. In this book, the author is mainly interested in these elements. His approach is to build a theoretical framework that could explain the source of these constants in our laws of physics and to propose a method that would not only predict them all but also define them. To do this, the author begins by introducing the assumptions on which he bases his theory. Then, in a first part, he expresses the universal constants, the Planck units and the thermodynamic quantities of the Universe in terms of its characteristic variables, such as its mass and its radius. In a second part, he demonstrates the constancy of the Planck units as well as that of the universal constants and, finally, he proposes a general theoretical framework to determine them.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The epic story of the greatest quest in all of science—the holy grail of physics that would explain the creation of the universe—from renowned theoretical physicist and author of The Future of the Mind and The Future of Humanity When Newton discovered the law of gravity, he unified the rules governing the heavens and the Earth. Since then, physicists have been placing new forces into ever-grander theories. But perhaps the ultimate challenge is achieving a monumental synthesis of the two remaining theories—relativity and the quantum theory. This would be the crowning achievement of science, a profound merging of all the forces of nature into one beautiful, magnificent equation to unlock the deepest mysteries in science: What happened before the Big Bang? What lies on the other side of a black hole? Are there other universes and dimensions? Is time travel possible? Why are we here? Kaku also explains the intense controversy swirling around this theory, with Nobel laureates taking opposite sides on this vital question. It is a captivating, gripping story; what’s at stake is nothing less than our conception of the universe. Written with Kaku’s trademark enthusiasm and clarity, this epic and engaging journey is the story of The God Equation.

Book The Constants of Nature

Download or read book The Constants of Nature written by John Barrow and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reality as we know it is bound by a set of constants—numbers and values that dictate the strengths of forces like gravity, the speed of light, and the masses of elementary particles. In The Constants of Nature, Cambridge Professor and bestselling author John D.Barrow takes us on an exploration of these governing principles. Drawing on physicists such as Einstein and Planck, Barrow illustrates with stunning clarity our dependence on the steadfastness of these principles. But he also suggests that the basic forces may have been radically different during the universe’s infancy, and suggests that they may continue a deeply hidden evolution. Perhaps most tantalizingly, Barrow theorizes about the realities that might one day be found in a universe with different parameters than our own.

Book The Little Book of Cosmology

Download or read book The Little Book of Cosmology written by Lyman Page and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cutting-edge science that is taking the measure of the universe The Little Book of Cosmology provides a breathtaking look at our universe on the grandest scales imaginable. Written by one of the world's leading experimental cosmologists, this short but deeply insightful book describes what scientists are revealing through precise measurements of the faint thermal afterglow of the Big Bang—known as the cosmic microwave background, or CMB—and how their findings are transforming our view of the cosmos. Blending the latest findings in cosmology with essential concepts from physics, Lyman Page first helps readers to grasp the sheer enormity of the universe, explaining how to understand the history of its formation and evolution in space and time. Then he sheds light on how spatial variations in the CMB formed, how they reveal the age, size, and geometry of the universe, and how they offer a blueprint for the formation of cosmic structure. Not only does Page explain current observations and measurements, he describes how they can be woven together into a unified picture to form the Standard Model of Cosmology. Yet much remains unknown, and this incisive book also describes the search for ever deeper knowledge at the field's frontiers—from quests to understand the nature of neutrinos and dark energy to investigations into the physics of the very early universe.

Book Soaring on the Wings of Genius A Chronic

Download or read book Soaring on the Wings of Genius A Chronic written by Andrew Worsley and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a unifying solution to myriad physical laws of Nature that govern the Universe? String theory represents the closest yet to such a unifying solution. However, after 20 years string theory has been unable to predict the physical constants of Nature and still has not provided the answer to quantum gravity. Recent strong evidence for the presence of a newly discovered energy, which affects the entire Universe may be the first clue to an as yet unlocked scientific paradigm. Dr Worsley argues forcibly that the answer to this paradigm opens a new window on the truly unified nature of the Universe. The arguments presented are clear concise and compelling.

Download or read book The Robot Factory written by Joseph Ganem and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes a disturbing misuse of the scientific method to advance policies and agendas that are in fact detrimental to both science and education. The author, a physics professor, examines two related trends in education – the practice of “data-driven” reform and the disparaging of the traditional liberal arts in favor of programs with a heavy emphasis on science and technology. Many of the reforms being foisted on educators have more in common with pseudo-science than real science. The reduction of education to a commodity, and the shilling of science as a means to enhance corporate profits, lead to an impoverished and stunted understanding of science in particular, and of education in general. How is it possible for: • schools with all students learning at grade-level to be rated as failing?• teachers to be rated as ineffective after all their students meet their learning outcomes?• rising grade-school math standards to result in more college students needing remedial math?• politicians to disparage scientists and their results but argue that more students should study science? These bizarre outcomes have happened and are the result of an education system that misuses and misrepresents math and science in the classroom and in crafting education policies. This book exposes the flawed and fallacious thinking that is damaging education at all levels throughout the United States, and makes a compelling case for rethinking the standardized, optimized, and quantified approaches in vogue in education today to accommodate the different needs of individual teachers and students.

  • Author : Martin Rees
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2008-08-04
  • ISBN : 0786723580

Download or read book Just Six Numbers written by Martin Rees and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a single "genesis event" create billions of galaxies, black holes, stars and planets? How did atoms assemble -- here on earth, and perhaps on other worlds -- into living beings intricate enough to ponder their origins? What fundamental laws govern our universe? This book describes new discoveries and offers remarkable insights into these fundamental questions. There are deep connections between stars and atoms, between the cosmos and the microworld. Just six numbers, imprinted in the "big bang," determine the essential features of our entire physical world. Moreover, cosmic evolution is astonishingly sensitive to the values of these numbers. If any one of them were "untuned," there could be no stars and no life. This realization offers a radically new perspective on our universe, our place in it, and the nature of physical laws.
