Book excerpt: During the last 30 years, there has been a remarkable devel opment and increase in the number of processes and devices that utilize or emit non-ionizing radiant energies such as micro waves, a form of electromagnetic wave energy and ultrasound representative of mechanical vibration. These energies are used in all sectors of our society for military, industrial, telecommunications, medical, and consumer applications. More recently, the use of ultrasound in biology and medicine has been considerably expanded. These increases in sources of non ionizing radiant energy have resulted in growing interest on the part of government regulatory agencies, industrial and mili tary physicians, research workers, clinicians, and even environ mentalists. Although there is information on biologic effects and potential hazards to man from exposure to microwaves or ultrasound, considerable confusion and misinformation has permeated not only the public press but also some scientific and technical publications. Interest in the biologic effects of high frequency currents developed in the beginning of the present century. This was followed by the introduction of "u1trashortwave" therapy. During the latter part of World War II, the U. S. military services became interested in the possible hazards to personnel working around microwave sources, and the Office of Naval Research of the U. S. Navy began to sponsor research on the biologic effects of microwaves in 1948. In 1956, the U. S.

Recently, a variety of new experimental methods such as X-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and atomic force microscopy have been used in order to study themolecular structure of these membranes. Their conformational behavior, on the other hand, is studied by optical and electron microscopy, which reveals that membranes in aqueous solution exhibit an amazing variety of different shapes. Several theoretical concepts are described suchas bending elasticity, curvature, and minimal surfaces in order to understand this polymorphism. These concepts are also useful to describe the behavior of membranes in complex fluids where they can build up hexagonal, lamellar, triply-periodic, cubic, and sponge phases. About 600 B.C., the Indians used other forms of natural polymers such as cotton, horse hair, and leather in repairing wounds. Wound closure procedures using silk sutures, based mostly on polypeptides, are likely to have been practiced during the second century. Surgical application of natural polymers continued to represent the major use of polymers until the twentieth century. Not too long after the development of several major synthetic polymers, their use in biomedical applications has attracted the attention of many re searchers and clinicians. Over the past few years, interest in the biomedical applications of polymers has grown considerably. This has been the result of the inevitable collaborative efforts of in novative materials scientists, engineers and clinicians. The es tablishment of the Society for Biomaterials, in our opinion, cata lyzed the growing interest in the use of polymers for biomedical application. In a major effort to bring team players even closer, a five-day symposium on "Polymers as Biomaterials" was held in Seattle, Washing ton, in March, 1983 as part of the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. The symposium was designed to provide a forum for communicating technical and clinical data to colleagues with a broad spectrum of interest in the biomedical applications of polymers.
