Book excerpt: This book is related to the theory of functions of a-bounded type in the ha- plane of the complex plane. I constructed this theory by application of the Li- ville integro-differentiation. To some extent, it is similar to M.M.Djrbashian's factorization theory of the classes Na of functions of a-bounded type in the disc, as much as the well known results on different classes and spaces of regular functions in the half-plane are similar to those in the disc. Besides, the book contains improvements of several results such as the Phragmen-Lindelof Principle and Nevanlinna Factorization in the Half-Plane and offers a new, equivalent definition of the classical Hardy spaces in the half-plane. The last chapter of the book presents author's united work with G.M. Gubreev (Odessa). It gives an application of both a-theories in the disc and in the half-plane in the spectral theory of linear operators. This is a solution of a problem repeatedly stated by M.G.Krein and being of special interest for a long time. The book is proposed for a wide range of readers. Some of its parts are comprehensible for graduate students, while the book in the whole is intended for young researchers and qualified specialists in the field.

They may be viewed as a course in function theory for nonspecialists. Chapters 1-6 give the function-theoretic background to Hardy Classes and Operator Theory, Oxford Mathematical Monographs, Oxford University Press, New York, 1985. These chapters were written first, and they were origi nally intended to be a part of that book. Half-plane function theory continues to be useful for applications and is a focal point in our account (Chapters 5 and 6). The theory of Hardy and Nevanlinna classes is derived from proper ties of harmonic majorants of subharmonic functions (Chapters 3 and 4). A selfcontained treatment of harmonic and subharmonic functions is included (Chapters 1 and 2). Chapters 7-9 present concepts from the theory of univalent functions and Loewner families leading to proofs of the Bieberbach, Robertson, and Milin conjectures. Their purpose is to make the work of de Branges accessible to students of operator theory. These chapters are by the second author. There is a high degree of independence in the chapters, allowing the material to be used in a variety of ways. For example, Chapters 5-6 can be studied alone by readers familiar with function theory on the unit disk. Chapters 7-9 have been used as the basis for a one-semester topics course.

Book excerpt: About one half of the papers in this volume are based on lectures which were pre sented at a conference at Leipzig University in August 1994, which was dedicated to Vladimir Petrovich Potapov. He would have been eighty years old. These have been supplemented by: (1) Historical material, based on reminiscences of former colleagues, students and associates of V.P. Potapov. (2) Translations of a number of important papers (which serve to clarify the Potapov approach to problems of interpolation and extension, as well as a number of related problems and methods) and are relatively unknown in the West. The conference was held at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, Italy, and was supported by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche of Italy and the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences. The aim of the conference was to encourage fruitful and active collaboration between researchers working in the diverse areas of system theory. It was also the hope of the organizers that mathematicians participating in the conference might become interested in the purely mathematical problems being raised by systems theory as a result of their participation. The success of the conference is to be measured by the extent to which these aims were fulfilled. Besides the formal programme of lectures recorded in this volume, many informal seminars were held. The cafes of Udine were often the scene of rich and varied discussions of recent developments in the field amongst the participants of the conference. Last but not least, listening to the ideas exposed in the lectures of others in a creative atmosphere was an important activity.
