They are the second commonest reason for a neurological outpatient consultation2. Functional symptoms also frequently present to the otology clinic.ObjectivesTo assess the frequency, and subsequent management, of functional symptoms presenting to an otology clinic.MethodsRetrospective review of all new referrals to a dedicated otology clinic over a 4-month period.Results 101 new patients presenting to a consultant otologist over 4 months were assessed. 54 patients (53.5%) presented with functional symptoms such as ear pain, aural fullness, imbalance, tinnitus and hyperacusis without any physical evidence of disease. 25 (46.2%) underwent MRI scans, all of which failed to identify a cause.ConclusionsFunctional symptoms make up over half of the new referrals in an otology clinic. Explaining the diagnosis in a clear, logical, transparent, and non-offensive way is the key to management.

We feel that it is important to supply a source of information on the vestibular system and balance disorders, and this title will do that in a comprehensive manner.
