Book excerpt: Winner of Christianity Today's Award of Merit for The Church/Pastoral Leadership 2018 Whether it’s because of the 2016 Presidential election or books like “Hillbilly Elegy,” Americans are beginning to understand the tremendous influence people in rural areas have in our nation. But rural America—not urban America—is also the new center of poverty. Thus, the rural church stands at the crossroads of strength and struggle. It carries the gospel, the very hope and power needed. Yet its ministry efforts are hamstrung because urban and suburban churches often don’t realize their need for rural churches, and the rural church itself rarely understands its unique assets and values. The Forgotten Church addresses these problems and: provides an overview of rural ministry explores opportunities recent trends provide showcases the remarkable benefits of suburban, urban, and rural churches working together This book is essential for any pastor—whether from the city or the sticks—because we are one body and we need each other.

Rona Orme offers realistic and creative ways of engaging with children in the community by encouraging churches to make the most of opportunities to: share the Church's year with the community and the community's year with the Church; reach children and their families at significant rites of passage; enable the Church to be a gathering point and contributing partner in the community. Each chapter contains inspiring case studies and thought-provoking questions for discussion.

What are the best courses of Bible study for working farmers? IS the present doctrinal training obsolete? Does the philosophy and theology taught in colleges and seminaries unfit men for rural service by its individualism? By teaching about exceptional instances, mira cles, wonders, heroism and saints, instead of teaching obedience to law, average cases, standards of conduct, typical men, practicable, economical and ethical levels? Is the seminary training for rural pastors unsuited by its traditions, viz., a prayer for rain in a region watered by irrigation? Does social efficiency suffer through the teach ing of sectarian doctrines? What course of seminary training would fit men for rural service? Should the seminary or the agricultural col lege train men for service in the country? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As rural America continues to undergo massive economic and demographic shifts, rural churches are uniquely positioned to provide community leadership. Leading a rural congregation requires a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing these communities, as well as a strong theological and community-focused identity. Allen T. Stanton describes how in establishing this identity, rural leaders build a meaningful and vital ministry. Reclaiming Rural explores the myths and realities of rural places, and how those common narratives impact the leadership of rural churches. Ultimately, rural congregations must practice a contextual understanding of vitality, which understands both the strengths and challenges of leading in a rural setting. Arguing for a practice of evangelism imbued with this mission of vitality, Reclaiming Rural promotes the church as a leader in economic and community development, modeled upon a Wesleyan theology of grace. Acknowledging the many challenges facing rural churches, this book is an energetic and encouraging guide to overcoming social and economic obstacles to build a thriving congregation.

Book The Church in Rural Community Living in the South

Download or read book The Church in Rural Community Living in the South written by Southern Rural Life Council and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in Rural Community Living in the South: Report of the Church Committee, Second Southern Rural Life Conference The first general work conference of the Southern Rural Life Council was held in 1943. The report of the conference was published under the title: The School and the Changing Pattern of Country Life. The second general work confer ence of the Council was held in 1946. Instead of publishing all of the committee reports of 1946 in a single volume as was done after the first conference, each committee report is being published separately. Separate publications should a'rd wide circulation and usability of the reports. It is to be hoped, however, that separate publications will not hinder the use of all the reports since one of the chief needs of community development is an integration of efforts of all inter ests and groups. It is fitting that the first of the five committee reports to be published deals with the church and rural community living in the South. The church, the institution most com mon to rural neighborhoods and communities, has great responsibility and potential influence. The quality of the influence of the rural church, be it positive or negative, unifying or divisive, is a force to be reckoned with. The quality of living to be found in rural communities depends in no small degree upon the quality of the ministry and the program of the local church. This report attempts to pre sent the need for a philosophy of rural life; the responsibility of the rural church in a world of secular materialism; the function of the church; what the church is doing to improve the quality of living; barriers experienced by church leader ship; what church leadership can do to improve community living; and outstanding illustrations of community co operation. The interest and financial assistance of the General Edu cation Board made possible the establishment of the Southern Rural Life Council and the publication of this report.
