Book A Functional Grammar of Gooniyandi

Download or read book A Functional Grammar of Gooniyandi written by William B. McGregor and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sets out to provide a comprehensive description of the grammar of Gooniyandi, a non-Pama-Nyungan language of the southern-central Kimberley region of Western Australia. It covers phonetics and phonology, word phrase and clause structure, and the semantics of closed-class grammatical items. The major focus is, however, on meaning: how do Gooniyandi speakers mean with and in their language. To this end, the theoretical framework of systemic functional grammar, particularly as elaborated in Halliday's recent work, is adopted. Certain refinements to the theory are proposed in order to better account for the Gooniyandi evidence. Of obvious importance to those studying Australian aboriginal languages, this work has an importance to a wider audience for its effective presentation of theory justification.

Written by a team of world-renowned scholars, this Handbook explores what we can learn about linguistics from the study of Romance languages, and how the body of comparative and historical data taken from them can be applied to linguistic study. It also offers insights into the diatopic and diachronic variation exhibited by the Romance family of languages, of a kind unparalleled for any other Western languages. By asking what Romance languages can do for linguistics, this Handbook is essential reading for all linguists interested in the insights that a knowledge of the Romance evidence can provide for general issues in linguistic theory.

Book excerpt: Cats are not referred to specialists as frequently as dogs, meaning the general practitioner must routinely treat cats that have been involved in road traffic accidents and other musculoskeletal trauma. This book is the first of its kind to provide a practical and user-friendly guide to feline orthopaedics. With a new author team, led by RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) and Veterinary Neurology Harry Scott, the second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. New chapters cover Physiotherapy and Oncology of the Feline Skeletal System. The book includes highly structured fully referenced text that provides a concise, straightforward guide to the recognition and management of specific diseases and conditions. In this new edition, the neurological causes of lameness have been given more in-depth discussion, with an emphasis on early recognition of clinical signs and diagnosis. The disorder sections are now divided into those likely to be associated with trauma (fractures and luxation) and those which are congenital or developmental. The text is supported by high quality radiographs, colour photographs and colour line drawings to illustrate principles, techniques and procedures. Combining their experience in practice and education, the authors have produced a book that appeals to general practice veterinarians, specialist feline practitioners and to students.
