Download or read book Literacy for Rural Women in the Third World written by Krystyna Chlebowska and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the 500 million women living in rural areas of the Third World who carry a tireless struggle for their survival and that of their families while at the same time playing a vital role in agriculture production, in educating their children and in handing down the traditions of their culture. Occupied from dawn to dusk working the fields, preparing meals, fetching water and fuel, and looking after their children and husbands, they are all marked by poverty, sometimes extreme poverty. And they are all illiterate.
Download or read book Lifelong Education written by Paul Bélanger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-05-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic aim of this special issue is to focus on the profound change of tendency in education that is taking place at both the national and interna tional level. At a time when education and lifelong learning are increasingly merging into one process, it is important to examine the ways in which edu cational policies and practices are evolving. Consequently, we invited a variety of contributors, both men and women, coming from different regions and encompassing both research and practice, to identify significant phenomena and trends that are indicative of the ways in which systems of education are responding to new social and cultural demands. We asked our contributors to show how educational reality in different countries is no longer confined within the temporal and spatial limits of institutional education, to indicate how models of educational practice are changing, to examine the extent to which the traditional cycles of human life are shifting their boundaries, and to describe how these changes are mani festing themselves in different national contexts in both South and North. We also asked our authors to pose questions raised by this educational revolution. We have included 17 contributions, some of the authors analysing par ticular national situations, others drawing questions and observations from their own experiences or taking a searching look at education from the perspective of a practical involvement in social iSl>ues or from a background of research into popular arts and traditions.

Download or read book Women Literacy and Development written by Anna Robinson-Pant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's literacy is often assumed to be the key to promoting better health, family planning and nutrition in the developing world. This has dominated much development research and has led to women's literacy being promoted by governments and aid agencies as the key to improving the lives of poor families. High dropout rates from literacy programmes suggest that the assumed link between women's literacy and development can be disputed. This book explores why women themselves want to learn to read and write and why, all too often, they decide that literacy classes are not for them. Bringing together the experiences of researchers, policy makers and practitioners working in more than a dozen countries, this edited volume presents alternative viewpoints on gender, development and literacy through detailed first-hand accounts. Rather than seeing literacy as a set of technical skills to be handed over in classrooms, these writers give new meaning to key terms such as 'barriers', 'culture', 'empowerment' and 'motivation'. Divided into three sections, this text examines new research approaches, a gendered perspective on literacy policy and programming, and implementation of literacy projects in African, Asian and South American contexts. With new insights and groundbreaking research, this collection will interest academics and professionals working in the fields of development, education and gender studies.

This work is an attempt to study the problem historically and in a futuristic perspective. After analysing this social evil, a few suggestions are also made to solve this problem. A dozen case studies are presented by the author in order to identify the various dimensions of the problem. The author has tried to make theoretical framework as strong as possible in order to provide the right focus. As female infanticide has been rampant in the Usilampatti area of Tamilnadu, the area has been chosen for analysis. The study includes the analysis of the views of women on female infanticide before and after the introduction of the Adult Education Programme.
