Download or read book Go Big Red written by Michael Babcock and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go Big Red covers Nebraska football in a way no other publication has, with personality profiles, anecdotes, and original research, as well as questions of fact and trivia, some of which will test even the most devoted and knowledgeable Cornhusker fans. Nebraska has enjoyed thirty-six consecutive winning seasons, made twenty-nine consecutive bowl appearances, and won five national championships. During that time, the Cornhuskers have had just two head coaches, Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne. Without question, this is the golden era of Cornhusker football, and Go Big Red is a celebration of that indisputable fact. It is much more than a trivia book--it goes beyond the hefty and comprehensive media guides published each season by the Nebraska Sports Information Office. There is a section devoted to the best of Broderick Thomas, the loquacious outside linebacker. And there are also some things you won't remember, or things you might not have known. Can you name all of the assistant coaches on Osborne's first staff in 1973? Can you list Nebraska's starters for the 1941 Rose Bowl game? Do you know how the "Blackshirt" tradition began? Devaney was a master storyteller, and the book includes a humorous story or two of his. The program became a haven for walk-ons under Osborne, and the book includes an all-walk-on team. Cornhusker football was king long ago. And this book offers insight into that past glory, achieved by the likes of "Jumbo" Stiehm, Ed Weir, and Guy Chamberlin. All-American Trev Albert, the Butkus Award winner in 1993, has expressed the meaning of Cornhusker football in the introduction, which is an integral part of the book's experience. Reading Go Big Red isn't the same as sitting in Memorial Stadium, awash in red on game day. But it's the next best thing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So You Think You’re a Cleveland Browns Fan? tests and expands your knowledge of the history of one of the NFL’s oldest franchises. Rather than merely posing questions and providing answers, you’ll get details behind each—stories that bring to life players and coaches, games and seasons. This book is divided into four parts, with progressively more difficult questions in each new section. The Practice Squad section contains the most basic questions. Next comes the Starter and Pro Bowl sections, followed by the biggest challenge: the Hall of Fame. Also the way, you’ll learn more about the great Browns players and coaches of the past and present, from Otto Graham, Lou Groza, and Marion Motley, to Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell, Brian Sipe, Paul Warfield, Leroy Kelly, Ozzie Newsome, Bernie Kosar, Greg Pruitt, Earnest Byner, Joe Delamielleure, Paul Brown, and so many more. Some of the many questions that this book answers include: When the Browns became members of the AFC Central Division in 1970, what were the three other teams in the division? I was Mike Phipps’s backup with the Browns in 1973. I had been mainly a reserve quarterback for Green Bay and Denver prior to that. Who am I? Who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a 41¬–34 victory over the Chiefs in Kansas City on December 20, 2009? The Browns have beaten both Super Bowl participants in the same season once. What year did they accomplish this unusual feat? This book makes the perfect gift for any fan of the Cleveland Browns!

Book When the Saints Came Marching In

Download or read book When the Saints Came Marching In written by George Becnel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famed defensive end Bubba Smith menacing opposing quarterbacks while wearing a New Orleans Saints uniform. Bruising running back Larry Csonka breaking tackles on his way to the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Future Hall-of-Fame defensive back Ken Houston returning an interception for a touchdown as the New Orleans defense sparks a victory for the Saints. All could have been possible had the New Orleans Saints front office had the scouting competence and foresight to draft the likes of Smith, Csonka and Houston. Instead, trades and draft selections for the likes of soon-forgotten players such as Gary Cuozzo, Les Kelley and Kevin Hardy helped to set a tone for futility that haunted the NFL franchise for many years. Unlike previous books about the New Orleans Saints that have either been an ode to the team or anecdotes about some of the team's more colorful characters, When the Saints Came Marching In: What the New Orleans NFL franchise did wrong (and sometimes right) in its expansion years is a comprehensive look at the crucial first five seasons of the New Orleans NFL franchise and how early decisions impacted the team. The book also takes a look at what the Saints might have done differently from 1967-1971 that could have taken the team in an alternate direction.

Book Legends of the Jungle

Download or read book Legends of the Jungle written by Mark Powell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Jim Breech is the teams all-time leading scorer in points and remains a beloved figure more than twenty years after his retirement. Cris Collinsworth led the team in receptions and receiving yards several times in the 1980sand topped the team in receiving touchdowns three times. But these great players and many others arent in the Bengals Hall of Fame, and its for a simple reason: It does not exist. That needs to change, according to die-hard fan Mark Powell. By creating its own Hall of Fame or Ring of Honor, the team would be paying tribute to its great players and personalities. But it would need to determine who is eligible and who should be honored first. Get a detailed look at one of the NFLs most interesting franchises, discover its rich history, and decide for yourself who deserves to be among the Legends of the Jungle.

Book Winning in the Trenches

Download or read book Winning in the Trenches written by Forrest Gregg and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winning in the Trenches provides a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era in professional football from one of the players who epitomized it. With candor, insight, and love for the game, Forrest Gregg takes the reader through a career that began in the mid-1950s when he was draft by the then-moribund Green Bay Packers. The NFL was a far different, and far less glamorous, place in those years. But, as Gregg tells it, things changed for the better when the team hired a new head coach, the now immortal Vince Lombardi. Gregg provides many colorful stories of the Lombardi years, during which the Packers dominated the sport, becoming what many experts call the greatest team of all time, winning a number of NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls. Though those teams were loaded with Hall of Famers, Lombardi famously called Gregg ''the finest player I ever coached.'' Lombardi moved on by the end of the 1960s, as did Gregg, who played in yet another Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys before retiring as one of the greatest offensive linemen in the history of the game. His love for the game wouldn't allow him to rest on his laurels, and Gregg moved into coaching, as an assistant with the San Diego Chargers and then the Cleveland Browns, who promoted him to head coach in the mid 1970s. Gregg is candid yet fair in his recollection of working with the Browns' controversial owner Art Modell. From that post, Gregg moved on to work for another controversial and demanding owner, Paul Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals. Within two years Gregg took that losing franchise all the way to the Super Bowl, winning the NFL's Coach of the Year award. But Green Bay was his true love, and Gregg returned to the Packers as the head coach. Controversy, however, dogged him, as several of his players were involved in off-the-field scandals, leading to an explosive tenure of several years.
