Book Boundary Element Topics

Download or read book Boundary Element Topics written by W.L. Wendland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called boundary element methods BEM, i.e. finite element approxima tions of boundary integral equations have been improved recently even more vividly then ever before and found some remarkable support by the German Research Foundation DFG in the just finished Priority Research Program "boundary element methods" . When this program began, we could start from several already existing particular activities which then during the six years initiated many new re sults and decisive new developments in theory and algorithms. The program was started due to encouragement by E. Stein, when most of the later par ticipants met in Stuttgart at a Boundary Element Conference 1987. Then W. Hackbusch, G. Kuhn, S. Wagner and W. Wendland were entrusted with writing the proposal which was 1988 presented at the German Research Foun dation and started in 1989 with 14 projects at 11 different universities. After German unification, the program was heavily extended by six more projects, four of which located in Eastern Germany. When we started, we were longing for the following goals: 1. Mathematicians and engineers should do joint research. 2. Methods and computational algorithms should be streamlined with re spect to the new computer architectures of vector and parallel computers. 3. The asymptotic error analysis of boundary element methods should be further developed. 4. Non-linear material laws should be taken care of by boundary element methods for crack-mechanics. 5. The coupling of finite boundary elements should be improved.

Book Nonlinear Waves and Offshore Structures

Download or read book Nonlinear Waves and Offshore Structures written by Cheung Hun Kim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The responses of offshore structures are significantly affected by steep nonlinear waves, currents and wind, leading to phenomena such as springing and ringing of TLPs, slow drift yaw motion of FPSOs and large oscillations of Spar platforms due to vortex shedding. Research has brought about significant progress in this field over the past few decades and introduced us to increasingly involved concepts and their diverse applicability. Thus, an in-depth understanding of steep nonlinear waves and their effects on the responses of offshore structures is essential for safe and effective designs. This book deals with analyses of nonlinear problems encountered in the design of offshore structures, as well as those that are of immediate practical interest to ocean engineers and designers. It presents conclusions drawn from recent research pertinent to nonlinear waves and their effects on the responses of offshore structures. Theories, observations and analyses of laboratory and field experiments are expounded such that the nonlinear effects can be clearly visualized.

Book A Boundary Element Method for the Strongly Nonlinear Analysis of Ventilating Water entry and Wave body Interaction Problems

Download or read book A Boundary Element Method for the Strongly Nonlinear Analysis of Ventilating Water entry and Wave body Interaction Problems written by Vimal Vinayan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional Boundary Element Method (BEM) is developed to study the strongly nonlinear interaction between a surface-piercing body and the free-surface. The scheme is applied to problems with and without the possibility of ventilation resulting from the motion and geometric configuration of the surface-piercing body. The main emphasis of this research work is on the development of numerical methods to improve the performance prediction of surface-piercing propellers by including the whole range of free-surface nonlinearities. The scheme is applied to predict the ventilated cavity shapes resulting from the vertical and rotational motion of a blade-section with fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions. The current method is able to predict the ventilated cavity shapes for a wide range of angles of attack and Froude numbers, and is in good agreement with existing experimental results. Through a comparison with a linearized free-surface method, the current method highlights the shortcomings of the negative image approach used commonly in two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical methods for surface-piercing hydrofoils or propellers. The current method with all its capabilities makes it a unique contribution to improving numerical tools for the performance prediction of surface-piercing propellers. The scheme is also applied to predict the roll and heave dynamics of two-dimensional Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel hull sections within a potential flow framework. The development of the potential flow model is aimed at validating the free-surface dynamics of an independently developed Navier Stokes Solver for predicting the roll characteristics of two-dimensional hull sections with bilge keels.

Book A Localized Finite Element Method for Three Dimensional Ship Motion Problems

Download or read book A Localized Finite Element Method for Three Dimensional Ship Motion Problems written by Kwang June Bai and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An application of the localized finite-element method to a three-dimensional time-harmonic free surface flow in a canal is presented. Boundary conditions on both the free surface and the body are linearized and imposed on their equilibrium positions. By utilizing known set of eigenfunctions, the computation domain is reduced to a very small local domain where an eight-node linear three-dimensional element is used. Proper matching is also imposed between two sets of trial functions on the truncated boundary. To be solved are the problems concerning; (1) six degree-of-freedom radiation and diffraction in three dimensions, (2) two dimensional motion corresponding to the local flow at midship cross-sectional plane, and (3) related eigenvalues. Specifically, two sets of results for two ship locations in a canal are presented. In both cases, the eigenvalues of the local cross-sectional plane are shown to play a significant role in the three-dimensional results. A remarkable similarity between existing forces and moment and the damping coefficients corresponding to the modes of their motions are also observed in the results. The accuracy of the three-dimensional results presented here is also discussed by comparing two sets of eigenvalues computed by using two different sizes of finite elements. (Author).
