Download or read book Solar and Space Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the interior of the Sun, to the upper atmosphere and near-space environment of Earth, and outward to a region far beyond Pluto where the Sun's influence wanes, advances during the past decade in space physics and solar physics-the disciplines NASA refers to as heliophysics-have yielded spectacular insights into the phenomena that affect our home in space. Solar and Space Physics, from the National Research Council's (NRC's) Committee for a Decadal Strategy in Solar and Space Physics, is the second NRC decadal survey in heliophysics. Building on the research accomplishments realized during the past decade, the report presents a program of basic and applied research for the period 2013-2022 that will improve scientific understanding of the mechanisms that drive the Sun's activity and the fundamental physical processes underlying near-Earth plasma dynamics, determine the physical interactions of Earth's atmospheric layers in the context of the connected Sun-Earth system, and enhance greatly the capability to provide realistic and specific forecasts of Earth's space environment that will better serve the needs of society. Although the recommended program is directed primarily at NASA and the National Science Foundation for action, the report also recommends actions by other federal agencies, especially the parts of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration charged with the day-to-day (operational) forecast of space weather. In addition to the recommendations included in this summary, related recommendations are presented in this report.

Book Achieving an Integrated Data Environment

Download or read book Achieving an Integrated Data Environment written by University of Texas at Austin. Construction Industry Institute and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade the construction industry has witnessed dramatic improvements in electronic data generation and management. The industry recognizes that these improvements offer opportunity for enhanced performance and competitiveness. Thus, companies acting individually or with key customers are pursuing electronic data management opportunities that offer immediate payback. As a result, many successful examples exist of CAD drawing utilization and transfer, electronic purchasing, and related applications. This has resulted in the creation of "islands of automation". These islands continue to be linked, however, by low technology bridges such as facsimile and paper documents. The full benefit of electronic data management will not be attained until the low technology bridges are eliminated and industry work practices are modified to fully exploit the technology. When this occurs throughout the entire industry, the integrated data environment will have arrived. The industry doubtlessly will achieve the integrated data environment. Questions do remain, however, about whether it will be achieved at a timely pace and in a fashion that is compatible with industry needs. This publication describes the barriers that threaten to limit the pace and effectiveness of the industry's drive towards the integrated data environment. It also presents a series of pragmatic recommendations for individual companies and the industry as a whole to remove these barriers: The effectiveness with which the industry implements these recommendations will impact its future competitiveness and growth. Cll Publication 20-1, EDI: Concepts and Applications, and Cll Publication 20-2, An Introduction to Integrated Database Systems, are companion reports to this document.

Book Conceptual Modeling ER 99

Download or read book Conceptual Modeling ER 99 written by Jacky Akoka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art, in conceptual modeling. It grew out of research papers presented at the 18th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER '99) and arranged by the editors. The plan of the conference is to cover the whole spectrum of conceptual modeling as it relates to database and information systems design and to offer a complete coverage of data and process modeling, database technology, and database applications. The aim of the conference and of these proceedings is to present new insights related to each of these topics. This book contains both selected and invited papers. The 33 selected papers are organized in 11 sessions encompassing the major themes of the conference, especially : - schema transformation, evolution, and integration - temporal database design - views and reuse in conceptual modeling - advanced conceptual modeling - business process modeling and workflows - data warehouse design. Besides the selected papers, 3 invited papers present the views of three keynote speakers, internationally known for their contribution to conceptual modeling and database research and for their active role in knowledge dissemination. Peter Chen presents the results of his ongoing research on ER model, XML, and the Web. Georges Gardarin presents the first results of an ESPRIT project federating various data sources with XML and XML-QL. Finally, Matthias Jarke develops a way to capture and evaluate the experiences gained about process designs in so-called process data warehouses.

Book Object Oriented Application Development Using the Cach Postrelational Database

Download or read book Object Oriented Application Development Using the Cach Postrelational Database written by Wolfgang Kirsten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, newly developed software packages are often obsolete already at the time of their introduction. Object-oriented software development is a possible—if not the only—solution to this dilemma: applications are modeled as software objects that describe the properties and the behavior of real-world entities. Such objects are encapsulated, in that they hide—behind a publicly known interface—the complexity of their internal data structures and behaviors. This enables objects to be used in a wide range of program packages without needing to know the details of their internal implementation. Linking object-oriented modeled applications with a database places special demands on a database management system and development environment when the usual performance and semantics losses are to be avoided. This book provides a detailed description of the object model of the Caché postrelational database. This second, revised and expanded edition includes the many new features of Caché 5. There is a comprehensive description of the new Caché Studio with its improvements for developing and debugging applications as well as a whole new chapter about XML and SOAP based Web Services. The chapters about Java, ActiveX and the SQL manager have undergone a complete revision.

Book Applying Digital Technologies to Evaluation

Download or read book Applying Digital Technologies to Evaluation written by Carl W. Lickteig and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army's growing reliance on digital technologies reinforces and extends concerns about training and evaluation, particularly in the area of command and control. Digital technology represents a new and powerful weapon for attacking evaluation requirements, but is a double-edged sword that poses challenge and opportunity. This report examines bow digital technologies can help solve many evaluation challenges, including the ones they create. The Background chapter reviews basic issues confronting conventional command and control performance and evaluation. Two key issues considered are manually burdened methods and measures, and the limitations imposed by analog media. The Findings chapter examines bow digital technologies might improve evaluations of command and control performance. This examination begins by identifying many of the new challenges introduced by digital command and control systems. Next, opportunities for overcoming evaluation challenges through the application of digital technologies are considered, including automated measures of versus about performance, more precise and comprehensive measures, and less burdened measurement methods. Finally, examples of digital measurement methods illustrate the potential for improving command and control evaluation through digital data integration, data mining, and data visualization. The report's conclusions identify some key research and development efforts required for applying digital technology to improve command and control performance and evaluation.

Book Design and Implementation of a Database Programming Language for XML based Applications

Download or read book Design and Implementation of a Database Programming Language for XML based Applications written by Henrike Schuhart and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication focuses on two main aspects; the seamless integration of XML and persistency concepts into the object-oriented programming language Java. XML is the de facto standard data exchange format between arbitrary applications. There have been many efforts to integrate XML into programming languages reaching from the simple document object model (DOM) to whole XML class generators. These approaches are available in most popular programming languages. The integration of persistency into programming languages has been done by database programming languages as well as by certain new popular frameworks like Hibernate or approaches like EJB. Nevertheless, these approaches suffer from certain limitations concerning in particular transparency and object-orientation. While existing database programming languages integrate the relational model, Hibernate and EJB 3.x does not support polymorphism in general. EJB 2.x does not even support inheritance. In addition, although they try to, the approaches except by some database programming languages are not transparent. In this work, transparency means that arbitrary types may become persistent. Moreover, algorithms remain unchanged whether they are executed on transient or persistent objects. Finally, users can work with persistency on a very high level. Since there are so many currently developed frameworks trying to solve the integration problem of XML and persistency into object-oriented programming languages, the need for a holistic and transparent object-oriented database programming language seems to be there. The starting point of XOBEDBPL, which stands for XML OBjEcts Database Programming Language, is the predecessor project XOBE. XOBE concentrates on the integration of XML objects and XPath as the query language for these objects. The most important feature of XOBE is that each XML operation is statically type checked against the declared XML schema. In XOBEDBPL the XML integration is extended regarding the manipulation of XML objects. Before, XML objects could only be queried but not updated. The static type checking idea is kept and enhanced to include updates. While XOBE's intentions lie on the development of web applications, all objects can remain transient. XOBEDBPL is supposed to deal with persistent objects as well.
