Book excerpt: The Rathskeller structure was a one-story, box-like structure measuring approximately 180 by 120 feet in plan and 20 feet in height. A 2-foot-thick waffle slab supported on columns, about 30 feet on centers, formed the roof. The floor was a 2.5-foot-thick reinforced slab that formed a raft foundation for the structure. Outside walls of the building were 12 inches thick. Uniform loading tests were conducted on this structure to investigate the shear strength of an interior panel; Strength of column-to-slab connections at edge panels; strengthening of a slab due to arch action when a single panel is loaded; and, residual strength after initial failure under each of the above patterns of loading. Book excerpt: This study was conducted in support of the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency's (DCPA) Crisis Relocation Planning (CRP) program in which existing structures will be upgraded to provide fallout shelters for a relocated population. A demonstration test was conducted in which a residential dwelling was upgraded by placing soil against the walls and on the roof of the structure. The shelter was large enough to house 80 people. Upgrading was accomplished partially by hand labor and machinery. The test showed that a conventional structure could be upgraded and that the shelter occupants using tools and materials found in most homes could if necessary upgrade their shelter during the expected 2- or 3-day period of crisis relocation preceding a nuclear attack.

Book excerpt: The Chimes Tower structure was a seven-story structure constructed of rolled steel sections bolted and/or riveted together. The structure was 9 feet- 3-3/8 inches square and 86 feet-8 inches tall. All floors had a uniform height of 12 feet except the top story, which was 14 feet-8 inches high. Dynamic tests were conducted on this structure to determine: Natural frequencies and mode shapes, and to compare results with values predicted theoretically; Degree of damping; Participation of the foundation in motion of the tower. Static tests were also conducted on the structure to: Allow comparisons of floor deflections and foundation motion with those observed during the dynamic tests. (Author).
