Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in production processes reflect the technological advances permeat ing our products and services. U. S. industry is modernizing and automating. In parallel, direct labor is fading as the primary cost driver while engineering and technology related cost elements loom ever larger. Traditional, labor-based ap proaches to estimating costs are losing their relevance. Old methods require aug mentation with new estimating tools and techniques that capture the emerging environment. This volume represents one of many responses to this challenge by the cost analysis profession. The Institute of Cost Analysis (lCA) is dedicated to improving the effective ness of cost and price analysis and enhancing the professional competence of its members. We encourage and promote exchange of research findings and appli cations between the academic community and cost professionals in industry and government. The 1990 National Meeting in Los Angeles, jointly spo~sored by ICA and the National Estimating Society (NES), provides such a forum. Presen tations will focus on new and improved tools and techniques of cost analysis. This volume is the second in a series. The first was produced in conjunction with the 1989 National Meeting of ICA/NES in Washington, D.C. The articles in this volume, all refereed, were selected from about 100 submitted for presen tation at the Los Angeles meeting.

This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cost is considered a crucial factor in much decision-making in private and public organisations. Therefore, the ability to calculate total estimated costs for different alternatives is important. However, such total cost analysis is a challenging task. Providing students with the knowledge and skills needed for total cost analysis is therefore relevant in several disciplines within higher education. Within logistics management, total cost analysis is for decades by several scholars regarded as a ‘cornerstone’, a fundamental part of the discipline. However, except for describing the basic steps and presumptions, the literature does not give much support concerning how to conduct such analyses, or which the difficulties associated with total cost analysis are. This blank space in literature is not limited to the logistics discipline, it stretches throughout many disciplines. Neither does literature cover how to teach to support students’ learning of total cost analysis. Hence, to address the lack of research, the purpose of this thesis was formulated as follows: To contribute to the understanding of conducting, learning, and teaching total cost analysis. Three research questions were shaped to address each part of the purpose: conducting, learning and teaching. RQ1 What challenges are connected to the process of conducting total cost analysis? RQ2 What thresholds are there for learning how to conduct total cost analysis? RQ3 How can total cost learning be supported by suitable educational methods? The research questions are connected to each other in the sense that the challenges of conducting total cost analysis (RQ1) indicate within which areas total cost learning is difficult, and thereby where thresholds are to be investigated (RQ2). Further, knowledge about the learning thresholds is needed to discuss suitable educational activities (RQ3). The research was conducted by a combination of literature reviews and multiple case studies at four Higher Education Institutions, where both teachers and students were approached. The findings for RQ1 were developed in an abductive procedure walking back and forth between literature and cases. A twelve-step process for total cost analysis was defined, and specific challenges associated for each of these steps. Regarding learning thresholds (RQ2), perceived difficulties with learning total cost analysis were identified in the case studies. These difficulties were then analysed against threshold characteristics available in literature. This resulted in the identification of four total cost learning thresholds. Literature on constructivist-based teaching was used to suggest teaching methods to support learning (RQ3). These types of activities proved to match the ones most appreciated by teachers and students in the studied cases. The twelve-step process provides a more structured and holistic view of total cost analysis than previously available in the logistics literature. The description of challenges with conducting total cost analysis is novel, not only within logistics, but also generally, why this is a major contribution from this research. Aspects regarding teaching and learning connected to logistics, and to total cost analysis, are very sparsely addressed in literature, which makes the findings concerning learning thresholds and teaching methods valuable. The findings are believed to be useful for different stakeholders. First and foremost, teachers can use the findings for designing programs, courses, and course modules which cover the important aspects of total cost analysis with help from educational activities supporting the students’ learning. Second, for organisations where total cost analyses are conducted, the suggested process with its steps and associated challenges can be used to achieve better total cost analyses, and in turn more substantiated decisions. In the longer perspective, better education on total cost analysis at Higher Education Institutions will further strengthen the total cost competence in organisations, thereby improving the total cost-related decision making. Total cost analysis is not unique for the logistics discipline. Although focus in the study has been on Higher Education Institutions providing logistics courses, the findings are to a high extent believed to be relevant also for other disciplines dealing with total cost analysis.

Book Considerations in Applying Benefit Cost Analysis to Preventive Interventions for Children Youth and Families

Download or read book Considerations in Applying Benefit Cost Analysis to Preventive Interventions for Children Youth and Families written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benefit-cost analyses hold great promise for influencing policies related to children, youth, and families. By comparing the costs of preventive interventions with the long-term benefits of those interventions, benefit-cost analysis provides a tool for determining what kinds of investments have the greatest potential to reduce the physical, mental, and behavioral health problems of young people. More generally, the growth of benefit-cost analysis as a field of research and practice represents an exciting and promising trend in the development and implementation of public policies. The utility of benefit-cost analyses has been limited by a lack of uniformity in the methods and assumptions underlying these studies. For years, those who perform and those who use benefit-cost analyses have argued that the development and use of theoretical, technical, and reporting standards for benefit-cost analyses would enhance the validity of results, increase comparability across studies, and accelerate the progress of the field. Considerations in Applying Benefit-Cost Analysis to Preventive Interventions for Children, Youth, and Families is the summary of a workshop convened by the Board on Children, Youth, and Families of the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council in November 2013 as the first phase of a possible two-part effort directed toward guiding future benefit-cost studies and enhancing the relevance of benefit-cost analysis to governments and other organizations wanting to make sound prevention decisions. The workshop brought together leading practitioners in the field, researchers who study the methodological and analytic dimensions of benefit-cost analysis, and representatives of organizations that use the results of benefit-cost analyses to shape and implement public policies. This report discusses a wide range of issues about benefit-cost analysis, including the level of research rigor that should be met before results from an evaluation are used to estimate or predict outcomes in a cost-benefit analysis; best practices and methodologies for costing prevention interventions; prevention outcomes that currently lend themselves to monetization; processes and methodologies that should be used when linking prevention outcomes to avoided costs or increased revenues; and best methods for handling risk and uncertainty in estimates.

Book Strengthening Benefit Cost Analysis for Early Childhood Interventions

Download or read book Strengthening Benefit Cost Analysis for Early Childhood Interventions written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deficiencies that many children experience from birth to school age-in health care, nutrition, emotional support, and intellectual stimulation, for example-play a major role in academic achievement gaps that persist for years, as well as in behavior and other problems. There are many intervention programs designed to strengthen families, provide disadvantaged children with the critical elements of healthy development, and prevent adverse experiences that can have lasting negative effects. In a climate of economic uncertainty and tight budgets, hard evidence not only that such interventions provide lasting benefits for children, their families, and society, but also that the benefits translate into savings that outweigh the costs is an extremely important asset in policy discussions. Convincing analysis of benefits and costs would provide a guide to the best ways to spend scarce resources for early childhood programs. Benefit-Cost Analysis for Early Childhood Interventions summarizes a workshop that was held to explore ways to strengthen benefit-cost analysis so it can be used to support effective policy decisions. This book describes the information and analysis that were presented at the workshop and the discussions that ensued.

Book Cost effectiveness Analysis of Single Session Walk In Counselling

Download or read book Cost effectiveness Analysis of Single Session Walk In Counselling written by Ramesh Lamsal and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Increased costs and demand for accessibility to mental health services accompanied by a decline in resources has forced mental health service providers and government to innovate and develop a variety of new programs and service delivery strategies. As a result, a substantial number of organizations in Ontario have adopted the walk-in/single session therapy model. Further, many more family services agencies are planning to open a walk-in counselling center. Although, there have been some studies on clinical effectiveness, only one previous study has examined the cost-effectiveness exclusively focusing on single-session therapy/walk-in counselling service and that study suffered from a small sample size and the lack of a control group. Therefore, a rigorous research that examines the economic effectiveness is of paramount need. With a large sample size and a control group, this study aims to close the existing gap in the economic evaluation of single-session therapy/walk-in counselling. Objective: To determine the cost-effectiveness analysis of a single-session walk-in counselling model of service delivery compared to the traditional counselling model. Methods: Cost effective analysis was undertaken with effectiveness measured by the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) score. Cost was measured using data on direct medical costs: physician cost, hospital cost, emergency visit cost, counselling cost, and other social service cost, and indirect costs: the cost of lost work days and the cost of lost usual activities. To make the results comparable to other interventions, the GHQ-12 score was converted to QALYs using Serrano-Aguilar et al.'s (2009) algorithm. Incremental Cost-effectiveness Ratio (ICER) was calculated comparing walk-in counselling to being on the waitlist for traditional counselling. A probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA) was performed to account for uncertainties of parameters. In-depth analysis was done using Mixed effect modeling (also called multilevel models) to analyze the data from both individual level and group/context level and also to study growth or change trajectories (of the outcome measure) over a period of time, in order to measure the effectiveness. Perspective: The societal perspective was used for our analysis with a time period of 10 weeks. Data sources: The data from a CIHR-funded project was used. The data were collected from two family service agencies in Ontario, Canada; Kitchener-Waterloo Counselling Services (KWCS) and Family Service Thames Valley (FSTV) at three different time points: baseline, 4 weeks and 10 weeks over a period of 6 months. Results: During the ten weeks of the study, the total mean incremental costs were ($1,499.55-$1,865.10) =-$365.55, indicating that walk-in counselling was less costly than the traditional counselling. The overall incremental outcome between intervention group and control group in QALYs after 10 weeks was, on average, (0.0215-0.0176) =0.0039. Combining the incremental costs and outcome differences across intervention and control groups resulted in average point estimates of the ICER of -$93,730.77 per QALY gained. Conclusions: The single-session walk-in counselling model of service delivery is cost saving, but the effect is not significant. It enables rapid improvement and faster service to those who need immediate help.
