Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugue There is probably no branch of musical composition in which theory is more widely, one might almost say hopelessly, at variance with practice than in that which forms the subject of the present volume. In Harmony, we are frequently meeting with cases in which the rules of the old text-books need much modification; but with regard to Fugue there are few indeed of the old precepts which are not continually, not to say systematically violated by the greatest masters. The reason for this is no doubt that the standard authorities on the subject, Fux and Marpurg, treated it from the point of view of the seventeenth century, and that most of their successors, such as Cherubini and Albrechtsberger (to name two of the most illustrious), have in the main adopted their rules, taking little or no account of the reformation, amounting almost to a reconstruction, of the fugue at the hands of J.S. Bach. Somewhat more liberality of tone will be found in the treatises of Andre, Richter, and Lobe; but not one of these, excepting Lobe, has taken Bach's work as the starting point for his investigations. Lobe, on the other hand, is too revolutionary; he even abolishes the names "subject" and "answer," using instead the terms "first imitation," "second imitation," &c. When we find a distinguished theorist like Andre saying that Bach is not a good model because he allows himself too many exceptions, and are informed that one of the principal German teachers of counterpoint is in the habit of telling his pupils that there is not a single correctly written fugue among Bach's "Forty-Eight," surely it is high time that an earnest protest were entered against a system of teaching which places in a kind of "Index Expurgatorius" the works of the greatest fugue writer that the world has ever seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Fugue The principles of fugal construction have been so ably and exhaustively dealt with by eminent authorities, that it would seem that there was little else to be said upon the subject. Experience, however, shows that there are not only various points which seem to call for further elucidation and illustration, but also some few principles which have not been accorded any formulated treatment hitherto. Book The Examination Fugue Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Examination Fugue Classic Reprint written by William Lovelock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Examination Fugue This is a purely utilitarian book designed entirely to help the candidate over some of the pitfalls he will encounter In dealing with the examination Fugue, and to give him some idea of appropriate style and construction. My only apology for adding to the existing number of books on Fugue is the fact that I have felt the need for some such compilation in my own teaching. The historical and traditional aspects of Fugue may be (and should be) studied in many other books I am not herein concerned with anything but the kind of Fugue which has to be produced, under conditions which generally involve a certain amount of nervous strain, in a maximum time of three hours a Fugue which is likely to present problems which were rarely, if ever, envisaged by Bach who, despite the speed at which he obviously had to work, was not labouring under the handicap of a rigid time-limit. I make no apology for my strictures on the kind of trap subject sometimes set - strictures which might be construed as being uncomplimentary to the devisers of such subjects. While I am in no way opposed to the setting of problems of legitimate difficulty, I feel that it should be a sine qua non that such problems be capable of a really musical solution. This, unfortunately, is not always the case, and one could quote numerous examples of subjects which seem to be designed to find out what sort of a second-rate best the harassed candidate can make of what is in any case bound to be a musically bad job. My thanks are due to Dr. B. Burrows for much invaluable criticism and advice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Dequincey s Dream Fugue Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dequincey s Dream Fugue Classic Reprint written by Lucile Price Leonard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dequincey's Dream-Fugue This single theme occupies the attention of the first division of the fugue - the exposition. Here, at the very outset, the theme or subject must be clearly presented. It must be of a character to arrest and hold attention whenever and wherever heard long enough to contain a definite idea, not too long for the memory to retain perfectly. It must be thoroughly impressed upon the attention, and, like the hero of melodrama, its nature and Characteristics must be understood thoroughly before the second act begins. Masters; of fugue accomplish this in various ways. Bach, in his big organ fugue in G Minor, which the Dream - Fugue resembles, has stated his subject in the soprano, answered it in the alto, restated it in the tenor, and re-answered it in the bass, - the subjects being proposed in the tonic, answered by practically the same theme in the dominant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugal Analysis: A Companion to "Fugue" St. Ann's (no. Which the author had known by heart for thirty years, he found, on analyzing it for this volume, several points of interest which he had never previously noticed. No doubt in many of these fugues much has been overlooked; the author trusts that enough has been said to put the student on the track of further discoveries for himself. In the arrangement of this volume, the author has followed as nearly as he could that of the companion work on Fugue. First come fugues on one subject, without and with regular countersubjects these are followed by specimens of fugues by inversion, augmentation, and diminution. No examples of Fughetta are included here, as four complete specimens had already been given in Chapter X. Of Fugue. The first part of this volume concludes with four different fugues on the same subject by Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. The comparison of these will, it is hoped, prove both interesting and instructive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Course of Instruction on Canon and Fugue Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Course of Instruction on Canon and Fugue Classic Reprint written by Salomon Jadassohn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Instruction on Canon and Fugue Those who desire to profit by this book, ought to have thoroughly mastered all the studies in Harmony, simple and double Counterpoint, and the practice in exercises of more than four parts. A student, thus well prepared, will be enabled to follow this course of teaching of the Canon and Fugue, arranged in progressive order; and commencing with the easiest forms of imitation, to compose more elaborate compositions in the form of the Fugue. Although the composers of the present day make use of this contrapuntal form comparatively seldom, we find its employment mostly in compositions for Organ, or in the choruses of Oratorios and Psalms; nevertheless, the study of the Fugue is indispensible to every true artist, especially to him who desires to devote himself to the cultivation of free composition. Also to non-composers, the study of Canon and Fugue will afford insight into the classical works of Bach, Handel and other important masters of the past. One need scarcely remark that the creations of art exist for every one, endowed with feeling; and that also the unpretending amateur will receive a deep and lasting impression, after hearing the Cantatas and Passion-music of Bach, Handel's Oratorios, or other contrapuntal master-pieces, without being able to understand all the ingenious combinations of them. This we are far from disputing, but on the other hand, we must admit, that the appreciation and understanding of a master-piece will very materially heighten the enjoyment of it, and that also the executive artist will be better qualified to interpret a work, the more he has learned to grasp the very innermost nature of it.
