Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugitive Facts: An Epitome of General Information, Obtained in Large Part From Sources Not Generally Accessible, and Covering More Than One Thousand Topics of General Interest and Frequent Inquiry Tion and in general reading upon which many have vague ideas and elusive reminiscences of former knowledge, but upon which few can give any accurate or definite information. If a large encyclopedia is consulted, these particular subjects are often not to be found, or else are treated so exhaustively and sci entificall y that the average reader finds it tedious and difficult, if not impossible. To ascertain the few essential facts that are de sired. The following pages comprise a collection of short arti cles on just such topics, ranging naturally from the most frivo lens to the most serious and scientific, but selected with much care, in order to include those of most general interest and fre quent inquiry. Suggestions for many of them have been oh tained from the queries in the correspondence departments of pe riodicals and newspapers. The volume is strictly popular and not intended for scientific reference; but all statements are sup ported by the best authorities, and in each case the efiort and aim have been to state in clear and concise language just the kind and amount of information which are usually sought. The matter has been drawn from a great number of sources, many of them being quite inaccessible to the community at large. Thus, in its pur pose and scope, the book is quite unlike any other now in the hands of the public. And suggests a certain sphere of usefulness and convenience which the editor trusts that it will fill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugitive Facts: A Dictionary of Rare and Curious Information; A Treasury of Facts, Legends, Sayings and Their Explanation, Obtained in Large Parte From Sources Not Generally Accessible, and Covering More Than One Thousand Topics of General Interest and Frequent Inquiry Adobe Houses are dwellings peculiar to Central and South America, Mexico and Texas, made of unburnt brick. They are usually one story high, and their durability is much greater than would be expected, as there are a number now in existence which have been standing for considerably more than a century. The composition of the bricks is loamy earth, containing about two thirds fine sand and one-third clayey dust. This is mixed with water and pressed into the required size in molds, and then taken from the molds and placed on edge on the ground and left to harden in the sun. The adobes are laid with mortar, the same as an ordinary brick, and at the completion Of every two feet of the structure an interval of two weeks is allowed for drying, and a similar space of time between the completion Of the walls and the putting on of the roof. Book I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang

Download or read book I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang written by Robert E. Burns and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang! is the amazing true story of one man's search for meaning, fall from grace, and eventual victory over injustice. In 1921, Robert E. Burns was a shell-shocked and penniless veteran who found himself at the mercy of Georgia's barbaric penal system when he fell in with a gang of petty thieves. Sentenced to six to ten years' hard labor for his part in a robbery that netted less than $6.00, Burns was shackled to a county chain gang. After four months of backbreaking work, he made a daring escape, dodging shotgun blasts, racing through swamps, and eluding bloodhounds on his way north. For seven years Burns lived as a free man. He married and became a prosperous Chicago businessman and publisher. When he fell in love with another woman, however, his jealous wife turned him in to the police, who arrested him as a fugitive from justice. Although he was promised lenient treatment and a quick pardon, he was back on a chain gang within a month. Undaunted, Burns did the impossible and escaped a second time, this time to New Jersey. He was still a hunted man living in hiding when this book was first published in 1932. The book and its movie version, nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1933, shocked the world by exposing Georgia's brutal treatment of prisoners. I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang! is a daring and heartbreaking book, an odyssey of misfortune, love, betrayal, adventure, and, above all, the unshakable courage and inner strength of the fugitive himself.
