Book Fugitive Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fugitive Essays Classic Reprint written by Josiah Royce and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugitive Essays The essays which comprise the present volume are the occasional and, with the exception of the last three, the early fruits of Professor Royce's philosophic genius. The title "Fugitive Essays" was chosen not to emphasize the editor's judgment of them. However excellent in themselves, in the total body of Professor Royce's works these early achievements of his must needs occupy a subordinate place. This is said not to detract from their intrinsic and enduring worth but rather to testify to the greatness of their author. For such was his philosophic fecundity that products of a high order must, when one considers the wealth of his other contributions, be characterized as fugitive. There is also a more obvious reason for so designating them. They are fugitive in a literal sense. Most of them are now virtually inaccessible, buried as they are in the pages of local periodicals which have long since ceased to appear. Some were never published and others found their way to journals more or less ephemeral. Published here for the first time are the following: "The Practical Significance of Pessimism" (1879), "Tests of Right and Wrong" (1880), "On Purpose in Thought" (1880), and "Natural Rights and Spinoza's Essay on Liberty " (1880). Book An Idiot s Fugitive Essays on Science

Download or read book An Idiot s Fugitive Essays on Science written by C. Truesdell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, after the agreeable fatigues of solicitation, Mrs Millamant set out a long bill of conditions subject to which she might by degrees dwindle into a wife, Mirabell offered in return the condition that he might not thereby be beyond measure enlarged into a husband. With age and experience in research come the twin dangers of dwindling into a philosopher of science while being enlarged into a dotard. The philosophy of science, I believe, should not be the preserve of senile scientists and of teachers of philosophy who have themselves never so much as understood the contents of a textbook of theoretical physics, let alone done a bit of mathematical research or even enjoyed the confidence of a creating scientist. On the latter count I run no risk: Any reader will see that I am untrained (though not altogether unread) in classroom philosophy. Of no ignorance of mine do I boast, indeed I regret it, but neither do I find this one ignorance fatal here, for few indeed of the great philosophers to explicate whose works hodiernal professors of phil osophy destroy forests of pulp were themselves so broadly and specially trained as are their scholiasts. In attempt to palliate the former count I have chosen to collect works written over the past thirty years, some of them not published before, and I include only a few very recent essays.

Book Fugitive Essays Upon Interesting and Useful Subjects Relating to the Early History of Ohio Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fugitive Essays Upon Interesting and Useful Subjects Relating to the Early History of Ohio Classic Reprint written by Charles Whittlesey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fugitive Essays, Upon Interesting and Useful Subjects, Relating to the Early History of Ohio It is not to the addresses or to their publication, nor to the custom of enlivening annual meetings with essays upon general subjects, that we object: for much of the interest and value of the Society is drawn from this practice. The form and manner of publication hitherto adopted will, however, we fear, destroy the popularity and usefulness of its permanent works. Philosophy is a word associated with history, in the name of incorporation, and this embraces almost the whole range of human knowledge; but the main design has been, is, and ought to be, the preservation and publication of historical facts. The practice we are noticing is not of so much consequence at present, as it may be in future, when these precedents shall have made it a law. It has been said that Ohio, in common with the new States, would furnish but a meager subject for the historian. One of this opinion must have reflected little upon the transactions of which the Mississippi Valley has been the scene, since the year 1073, when the Frenchman first made his appearance within its bounds. Fiance, as intimated in the preface to these Transactions, is probably the repository of all the important records of this early period. To the inhabitants of that country, much more is known of the events of the region we inhabit, than by ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gaieties and Gravities, Vol. 1 of 3: A Series of Essays, Comic Tales, and Fugitive Vagaries OF the following Papers, the greater part have already been published, mostly in the New Monthly Magazine; and if the Author be asked why such pro ductions, (many of them very frivolous in their na ture, ) should be preserved from that fate which con demus so much Literature of better quality to be strictly fugitive, he is really unprepared with an an swer; unless it may be surmised that their very light ness may keep them awhile from sinking, as straws and bubbles will float upon those waters of oblivion, wherein things of greater weight and value are doomed to be engulphed.
