Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1880 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE TO THE THIRD VOLUME. (Translation.) WHILE Kunsho in his Hundred Views of Fuji merely aims at a bare delineation of the great Mountain, our venerable Hokusai here presents to us the picturesque aspects of the Peerless Hill, and the following pages show with how sure and bold a brush, with how unrivalled a talent, he has rendered every feature of his subject. Our venerable Master indeed, who, if report be true, has overlived his ninetieth year, shows all the vigour of youth in his work; and, indeed, it was on this famous Mountain that of old the Elixir of Life was sought for and found. When this Third Volume was ready for publication, I was asked to contribute a Preface to it, to which request I acceded without ado. Written by the old gentleman Ogasawara, living at the foot of the Mountain of the Seven Treasures (Shichi-ho-zan.) See Preface to the First Volume. DESCRIPTION OF PLATES. PLATE I. Akasawa No Fuji. A sort of frontispiece, representing a struggle between two noted wrestlers (sumo-tori), named Matanogoro Kumihisa and Kawadzusaburo Sukeyosu, who dwelt in the quarter or ward of Yedo known as Akasawa. PLATE II. Noretsu Henkei No Fuji. Distant view of the Mountain from the natural bridge formed of the intertwining branches of two ancient and gnarled pines at Noretau, over which pilgrims pass on their way up Nantai-zan, the high Mountain towering over the lake of Chiuzenji, near Nikko, some ninety miles north of Yedo. PLATE III. Shiusetsu No Fuji. The Mountain in a Snowstorm. The drear winter aspect is well rendered, and the effect is heightened by the train of wayfarers gathering their snow-laden straw capes closely round them as some protection against the biting cold. PLATE IV. Kika Besso Sunamura No Fuji. Fuji from the...

This book was released on 2008 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished British scholar-diplomat Ernest Mason Satow (1843-1929) was one of the most prominent and pre-eminent Japanologists in the Victorian era when the subject was newly created as Japan began to open its doors to foreigners from the mid-1850s. He shared this honour with Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) and the two addressees of the letters reproduced here by permission of the U.K. National Archives: co-worker William George Aston (1841-1911) and Frederick Victor Dickins (1838-1915). This book is part of a series in which Ian Ruxton is making some of the extensive Satow Papers publicly available for the first time. It includes an introduction by Professor Peter Kornicki of the East Asia Institute at the University of Cambridge, eight black & white illustrations, 166 annotations, two appendices, a select bibliography and a full index for ease of reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hokusai’s “Great Wave,” as it is commonly known today, is arguably one of Japan’s most successful exports, its commanding cresting profile instantly recognizable no matter how different its representations in media and style. In this richly illustrated and highly original study, Christine Guth examines the iconic wave from its first publication in 1831 through the remarkable range of its articulations, arguing that it has been a site where the tensions, contradictions, and, especially, the productive creativities of the local and the global have been negotiated and expressed. She follows the wave’s trajectory across geographies, linking its movements with larger political, economic, technological, and sociocultural developments. Adopting a case study approach, Guth explores issues that map the social life of the iconic wave across time and place, from the initial reception of the woodblock print in Japan, to the image’s adaptations as part of “international nationalism,” its place in American perceptions of Japan, its commercial adoption for lifestyle branding, and finally to its identification as a tsunami, bringing not culture but disaster in its wake. Wide ranging in scope yet grounded in close readings of disparate iterations of the wave, multidisciplinary and theoretically informed in its approach, Hokusai’s Great Wave will change both how we look at this global icon and the way we study the circulation of Japanese prints. This accessible and engagingly written work moves beyond the standard hagiographical approach to recognize, as categories of analysis, historical and geographic contingency as well as visual and technical brilliance. It is a book that will interest students of Japan and its culture and more generally those seeking fresh perspectives on the dynamics of cultural globalization.
