Book excerpt: The Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineer ing (ICASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) brought together on October 2-4, 1989 experts in the various areas of com bustion with a view to expose them to some combustion problems of technological interest to LaRC and possibly foster interaction with the academic community in these research areas. The top ics chosen for this purpose were flame structure, flame stability, flame holding/extinction, chemical kinetics, turbulence-kinetics in teraction, transition to detonation, and reacting free shear layers. The lead paper set the stage by discussing the status and issues of supersonic combustion relevant to scramjet engine. Then the ex perts were called upon i) to review the current status of knowledge in the aforementioned ;:I. reas, ii) to focus on how this knowledge can be extended and applied to high-speed combustion, and iii) to suggest future directions of research in these areas. Each topic was then dealt with in a position paper followed by formal discussion papers and a general discussion involving the participants. The position papers discussed the state-of-the-art with an emphasis on key issues that needed to be resolved in the near future. The discussion papers crit ically examined these issues and filled in any lacunae therein. The edited versions of the general discussions in the form of questions from the audience and answers from the speakers are included wher ever possible to give the reader the flavor of the lively interactions that took place.

Book excerpt: Combustion has provided society with most of its energy needs for millenia, from igniting the fires of cave dwellers to propelling the rockets that traveled to the Moon. Even in the face of climate change and the increasing availability of alternative energy sources, fossil fuels will continue to be used for many decades. However, they will likely become more expensive, and pressure to minimize undesired combustion by-products (pollutants) will likely increase. The trends in the continued use of fossil fuels and likely use of alternative combustion fuels call for more rapid development of improved combustion systems. In January 2009, the Multi-Agency Coordinating Committee on Combustion Research (MACCCR) requested that the National Research Council (NRC) conduct a study of the structure and use of a cyberinfrastructure (CI) for combustion research. The charge to the authoring committee of Transforming Combustion Research through Cyberinfrastructure was to: identify opportunities to improve combustion research through computational infrastructure (CI) and the potential benefits to applications; identify necessary CI elements and evaluate the accessibility, sustainability, and economic models for various approaches; identify CI that is needed for education in combustion science and engineering; identify human, cultural, institutional, and policy challenges and how other fields are addressing them. Transforming Combustion Research through Cyberinfrastructure also estimates the resources needed to provide stable, long-term CI for research in combustion and recommends a plan for enhanced exploitation of CI for combustion research.

Crowe, Jr. as an example of DOD supported research in the School of Engineering. The chemical analysis instrumentation in the facility as well as the boron particle sizing and visualizing devices that have also been purchased are described briefly in this final report. Temperature control may require the use of new, endothermic fuels such as methylcyclohexane (MCH). This cycloalkane in the presence of a catalyst dehydrogenates to toluene. The toluene and hydrogen product, containing a small amount of unreacted MCH, fuel the combustor. The burning characteristics of the mixture as well as its temperature stability as it is transferred to the combustor, most likely as a supercritical fluid, are largely unknown. Clarifying the combustion and thermal stability characteristics of both gaseous and supercritical fluid mixtures of toluene and methylcyclohexane has been the focus of the past year's research."--Abstract

Book excerpt: Present and anticipated variation in jet propulsion fuels due to advanced engine compression ratios and airframe cooling requirements necessitate greater understanding of chemical phenomena associated with the feed system and combustion aspects of the airbreathing propulsion systems under consideration by the U.S. Air Force. With AFOSR support an integrated. fundamental research program had been established at Princeton. The focus during the subject period was directed to understanding the pyrolysis and combustion of endothermic fuels under subcritical conditions and the pyrolysis of these fuels under supercritical conditions. Main consideration was given to methylcyclohexane, decalin and tetralin, which are not only endothermic fuels. but alkylcyclohydrocarbons. the naphthene component of JP fuels. The subcritical conditions in the study were 0.1 MPa (1 atm) and temperatures ranging between 900-1200 K. The supercritical conditions were between 4-9 MPa (40-90 atm) and 720-820 K. The Princeton Turbulent Flow Reactor was used for the subcritical studies and a newly designed coiled tubular reactor for the supercritical studies. Substantial experimentation and analytical evaluation revealed distinct differences between the subcritical and supercritical results. From the rate of fuel decay under the conditions described, it was determined that, although the activation energies were of the same order, the supercritical (4.5 MPa) pre-exponential factor A was two orders of magnitude greater than the subcritical (0.1 MPA) one. Further, not only were complete scission products of all these fuels found for both cases, but, interestingly, cyclo-intermediates were found under supercritical conditions as well. As the supercritical pressure was increased, the ratio of cyclo-intermediates to scission products increased. Additional experimentation revealed that these cyclo compounds lead to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are the precursors to particulate formation. c.
