Book Fuel Flash Point and Airline Maintenance Practices

Download or read book Fuel Flash Point and Airline Maintenance Practices written by JJ. Brenneman and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No clearly defined codes govern the safety requirements of aircraft hangar maintenance practices. The experience of United Airlines is typical of other air carriers. When piston aircraft were serviced, aviation gasoline was removed and a flash point base oil Class II liquid substituted in order to work on aircraft inside the hangar. The base oil flash point was monitored. Use of Jet A fuel made this procedure unnecessary; outside defueling is not required. If a reduced flash point jet fuel (a Class I flammable liquid) were used in aircraft, the former base oil procedure might have to be reinstituted which would increase costs. Airport fire officials and insurance underwriters would determine under what conditions a reduced flash kerosine could be handled. Probable facility changes include venting wing tanks outdoors, fitting of flame arrestors on tank and container vents, closer control of ignition sources, and general improvement in hangar ventilation.

Book Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety

Download or read book Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-09-18 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reduction of the fire hazard of fuel is critical to improving survivability in impact-survivable aircraft accidents. Despite current fire prevention and mitigation approaches, fuel flammability can overwhelm post-crash fire scenarios. The Workshop on Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety was held November 19-20, 1996 to review the current state of development, technological needs, and promising technology for the future development of aviation fuels that are most resistant to ignition during a crash. This book contains a summary of workshop discussions and 11 presented papers in the areas of fuel and additive technologies, aircraft fuel system requirements, and the characterization of fuel fires.

Book Aircraft Engineering Principles

Download or read book Aircraft Engineering Principles written by Lloyd Dingle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Engineering Principles is the essential text for anyone studying for licensed A&P or Aircraft Maintenance Engineer status. The book is written to meet the requirements of JAR-66/ECAR-66, the Joint Aviation Requirement (to be replaced by European Civil Aviation Regulation) for all aircraft engineers within Europe, which is also being continuously harmonised with Federal Aviation Administation requirements in the USA. The book covers modules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 of JAR-66/ECAR-66 in full and to a depth appropriate for Aircraft Maintenance Certifying Technicians, and will also be a valuabe reference for those taking ab initio programmes in JAR-147/ECAR-147 and FAR-147. In addition, the necessary mathematics, aerodynamics and electrical principles have been included to meet the requirements of introductory Aerospace Engineering courses. Numerous written and multiple choice questions are provided at the end of each chapter, to aid learning.

Book Condition Based Maintenance in Aviation

Download or read book Condition Based Maintenance in Aviation written by Ravi Rajamani and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condition-Based Maintenance in Aviation: The History, The Business and The Technology describes the history and practice of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) systems by showcasing ten technical papers from the archives of SAE International, stretching from the dawn of the jet age down to the present times. By scientifically understanding how different components degrade during operations, it is possible to schedule inspections, repairs, and overhauls at appropriate intervals so that any incipient failure can be detected well in advance. Today, this includes more sensors and analytics so that periodic inspections are replaced by automated "continuous" inspections, and analytical methods that detect imminent failures and predict degradation issues more economically and efficiently. Similar concepts are also being developed for delivering prognostics functions, such as tracking of remaining useful life (RUL) of life-limited parts in aircraft engines. The discipline within CBM that deals with this is called prognostics and health management (PHM), which covers all aspects of diagnostics and prognostics, including modeling of systems and subsystems, sensing, data transmission, storage and retrieval, analytical methods, and decision making. Traditionally, nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have been employed during the major airplane checks to assess structural damage. These techniques are enhanced with in- situ sensing techniques that can continuously monitor aircraft structures and report on their health. The move to condition-based assessment of maintenance needs to be balanced by the assurance that safety is not compromised, that initial cost of new equipment is amortized by the savings, and that regulatory authorities are on board with any modifications to the planned maintenance schedule. The trend is clearly to include more CBM functions into Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) processes so better cost control can be achieved without ever comprising passenger safety.
