Book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Lawrance and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Fruit Culture The term "fruit tree" conjures up, for many people, the image of a great tree with immense spreading branches and wandering roots. "We have no room for fruit trees," they say, and that is the chief reason why many owners of small gardens do not plant fruit trees. Insecurity of tenure provides another reason - the man who hires his garden on a very short lease does not care to plant trees because he is under the impression that he cannot move them if, and when, he gives up the land. The general belief that fruit trees will not come into bearing until they are ten or twelve years old is another thing which militates against the planting of hardy fruits. It is time that all this misunderstanding was swept away; every one should know that when fruit trees are worked on the right kind of stock, they will take up very little room in the garden, they will come into bearing within two or three years after grafting and, if necessary, they may be lifted and moved even when they have been growing in the same spot for six or eight years. With respect to the last point, it is necessary under existing laws, to obtain the permission of the landlord before planting trees in hired gardens; then the trees may be moved when the tenancy expires. Book Elliott s Fruit Book Or the American Fruit Brower s Guide in Orchard and Garden Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elliott's Fruit Book: Or, the American Fruit-Brower's Guide in Orchard and Garden Few objects are more engaging than the culture of fruit Hope, with all her pleasing fancies, encircles every planter of a fruit tree; while year after year, as it is nurtured and advanced to a bearing state, Hope yet remains entwined with prospective reality; until at last its branches, loaded with ripe, ruddy, delicious fruits, bear out the goddess in sustaining the efforts of man to gratification of taste and feeling, as well as profit pecuniary. Fortunate is it for the author of a work on fruits in this practical age, that no excuse is required for presenting himself before the public, or crowding upon ground apparently now so fully occupied. Hazardous as the thought may appear, after so much of matter upon the subject has been prepared and published, minutely, practically, and theoretically explanatory, by such writers as Coxe, Lindley, Downing, Thomas, and others, I yet have imagined there was room for another work at least it may induce an extended interest in the subject; and in a country so broad of extent - so prolific of fruits and men - composed of such great diversity of soil and climate as ours, there may possibly be garnered some little items that heretofore have escaped the vision of my brother lovers of the subject Pleasantly, therefore, during the past ten years, have I been nurturing of trees and noting their products; gradually have I drawn in from the stores of my many friends, the votaries of Pomona, specimens of their skill and trust. These I have carefully examined and compared, and have meted to them in the following pages such award as seemed to me just. Book The Fruit Grower s Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fruit Grower s Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Grower's Guide, Vol. 1 It may be expected that few thoughtful persons will be inclined to dispute those propositions; especially, perhaps, the last of them. Fruit, in its best condition, is the purest of food, health-giving, life-sustaining and delicious. It was the first food of the human family, and it has been the last food of countless thousands in the decline of life, accepted and enjoyed when coarser was rejected, and so it will be to the end of time. Yet the full value of fruit is by no means generally appreciated. It is regarded by many, if not the majority, as a luxury 2 and a luxury it undoubtedly is to vast numbers of the dwellers in populous cities, while there are several districts in which the inhabitants either do not have nearly so much as they wish, and as would be good for them, or they have to consume what is inferior. A full, good, and cheap supply of the different sorts of fruit that can be produced in this country would be of enormous benefit to the community. How, where, and by whom fruits of various kinds, and of the best quality, can be produced it is the object of this work to point out, and every cultural detail advanced will be founded on experience gained in orchards, gardens, and fruit-growing establishments, with and without the aid of glass structures, in various parts of the kingdom. Until recent years the importance of systematic fruit culture in the gardens and fields of Great Britain had not been adequately recognised. The pursuit is one of the most enjoy able that can be indulged in by all persons who have, or can acquire, land suitable for the purpose. Home-grown fruit is a necessity of life, and the resources of the United Kingdom are equal to the production of the leading kinds in the greatest excellence; indeed it is questionable if so many fruits can be grown equally well in any other part of the globe as in Great Britain and Ireland. Several of the most popular of those fruits, which are being more and more regarded as food products, are indigenous to our land; hence the soil and climate are suitable for their development, or can be made so. Book Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fruit Culture Classic Reprint written by International Library Of Technology and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Culture Thus, it is seen that all this experience with individual fruit producing plants gives the grower a more intimate acquaint ance with and an understanding Of the activity Of fruit-bearing plants than a farmer Obtains Of the general field crops that he grows. Another important factor that has contributed to rendering fruit growing a specialized business is the development of Special fruit-growing centers. Formerly the fruit consumed in a given region was grown locally, largely because transpor tation facilities were such that it was impossible to ship fruit over long distances. If a community were to be supplied with fruit, it was necessary that it be grown in the immediate Vicinity Whether the soil or climate were especially favorable to that fruit or not. Modern methods of transportation and refrigeration, however, enable growers to ship fruit over long distances and to hold it on the market for periods of several weeks, and on account Of these changed conditions, it is possible for the fruit grower of the present time to select locations where the soil, climate, and other conditions are especially favorable to the growing Of a given kind of fruit. Each decade the consuming public is demanding a finer product; competition is becoming very keen in an attempt to produce the best; and insects and diseases have Spread from former local areas to large general areas throughout most fruit-growing sections. This means that the fruit grower must be awake to methods of preventing injur'y to the fruit crop by insects and fungous diseases. In fact, to be abreast of the times today, the fruit grower must put forth intelligent effort in every direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Grower's Hand Book: A Concise Manual of Directions for the Selection and Culture of the Best Hardy Fruits in the Garden or Orchard Violations of Nature's design, are seen in the tears of the child, gloating over fruits which it may not touch, or sickening with green or half ripe substitutes; in the crime and shame of yielding to a strong temptation, - the golden burthen of a neighbor's tree; \and in unnatural and pernicious thirst for fermented drinks, an appetite scarcely formed by those who enjoy a constant supply of fresh juicy fruits throughout the year. When Doctor Dwight first removed to New Haven, but little fruit was raised there. He urged his neighbors to plant trees, but they said it was of no use, for the boys would steal all the fruit.(53) Plant more, was his answer, make good fruit plenty. Fifteen years afterwards, he pointed to the abundance of fruit, and the ah sence of pillage then enjoyed, in proof of his principle. His mem ory is green. Book Culture and Imperialism

Download or read book Culture and Imperialism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark work from the author of Orientalism that explores the long-overlooked connections between the Western imperial endeavor and the culture that both reflected and reinforced it. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as the Western powers built empires that stretched from Australia to the West Indies, Western artists created masterpieces ranging from Mansfield Park to Heart of Darkness and Aida. Yet most cultural critics continue to see these phenomena as separate. Edward Said looks at these works alongside those of such writers as W. B. Yeats, Chinua Achebe, and Salman Rushdie to show how subject peoples produced their own vigorous cultures of opposition and resistance. Vast in scope and stunning in its erudition, Culture and Imperialism reopens the dialogue between literature and the life of its time.

Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
