Download or read book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables written by Dean Humboldt Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables: Apples, Pears, Quinces Some of the more important facts concerning fungi (molds) should be kept in mind in dealing with fungus diseases of fruits. An important characteristic of most fungi is that they produce minute bodies called spores, which are usually the most important means by which fungi reproduce themselves and are distributed. Being small and light, spores are easily carried by wind, rain, insects, and other agents. Spores of several kinds of fungi that attack fruits are quite common on the soil surface and on all plant parts above ground. Spores on the surface of a fruit, under favorable conditions, produce fine fungus threads that may enter the fruit and cause disease. Fungus spores lie inert until temperature and moisture condi tions are favorable for their germination. The fungus threads they produce may or may not enter the fruit through the unbroken skin, but they are always more likely to enter if skin breaks are present. Factors that favor the development of each disease in storage, in transit, or on the market are discussed under appropri ate headings. And they often cannot be distinguished with certainty except by microscopic examination. In the case of alternaria rot, how ever, the surface mold is darker, the decayed tissue is moister and darker, and the enlargement of the lesions is more rapid. Typical dark mycelium of Alternaria is sometimes found also in a skin-deep decay that may cover half a cherry. Apparently this type of decay follows bruising that causes some escape of juice. It is more frequently reported on sour cherries than on sweet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'One of the most powerful books in the social sciences ever written. ... A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale

Book Contract Farming for Inclusive Market Access

Download or read book Contract Farming for Inclusive Market Access written by Carlos A. Da Silva and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to typify the extent to which contract farming is helping small farmers to access markets and meet increasingly stringent requirements, not only of "modern" food manufacturers, retailers, exporters and food service firms,by also in non-food sectors such as biofuels and forestry. It also seeks to clarify differences in the functionality of contracts depending on commodity, market, technology, public policies and country circumstances. Conceptual issues are discussed and a series of case study appraisals based on real world examples from developing regions are presented. The issuesraised by the case study authors and the key messages synthesized in the initial book chapter bring new insights and contributions to further enrich knowledge on contract farming as a tool for inclusive market access in development countries.

Book Introduction to Plant Diseases

Download or read book Introduction to Plant Diseases written by George B. Lucas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year we see a remarkable increase in scientific knowledge. We are learning more each day about the world around us, about the numerous biological organisms of the biosphere, about the physical and chemical processes that shaped and continue to change our planet. The cataloging, retrieval, dissemination, and use of this new information along with the continued development of new computer technology provide some of the most challenging problems in science as we enter the Information Age. With the explosion of knowledge in science, it is especially important that students in introductory courses learn not only the basic material of a subject, but also about the newest developments in that subject. With this goal in mind, we have prepared a second edition of Introduction to Plant Diseases: Identification and Management. We prepared this edition with the same general purpose that we had for the first edition - to provide practical, up-to-date information that helps in the successful management of diseases on food, fiber, and landscape plants for students who do not have a strong background in the biological sciences. We included new information on (1) the precise identification of diseases and the pathogens that cause them, (2) the development of epidemics of plant diseases, (3) the application of biotechnology in plant pathology, (4) the use of alternative methods of crop production and disease management that help protect the environment, and (5) diseases that have become more important since the first edition was published.
