Rudra brings in her novel ways of investigation of getting into the killer’s mind and has her first breakthrough. As the case proceeds, Rudra is shocked to discover how crimes all over the world are driven by universal passions, and how, with the slight provocation, even seemingly innocent people can be driven to horrendous crimes. But what Rudra does not know is that the killer, who is always one step ahead of her, is much closer to home than she thinks. It takes a terrible tragedy to prove that to her. Book excerpt: Whenever one smiles and tells people that he or she is okay, they believe it. But then, when that person tells them about how down and low they feel, people say that you are so happy and you’re smiling, then how are you feeling that way? Well, one thing that people need to learn is that appearances can be deceiving. You don’t want to believe someone based on how they seem currently. People need to learn how to be kind, soft-spoken and learn to manage their ego since you don’t know what the other person is going through. One unnecessary word from you can change their lives and might make someone end theirs. We don’t tend to know the power held by our words. Even circumlocution can hurt someone. But some simple, kind words become soothing and miraculous for a person. Those words act like a rope when a person is drowning in the sea of darkness. It gives a new ray of hope. And that’s what happened to the author of this Frozen Tears. This book describes the pain one goes through during the heart-breaking yet ethereal phase of ‘one-sided’ love. The phase which gives rise to a new and fresh being, which happens to everyone at least once in their lifetime, happened with Alisha. Even though she knew that the feeling wouldn’t be mutual, she suffered through that phase, and it was even more breaking than she had expected. It was a sudden paroxysm of grieving emotions.

Finally his journey takes him to Dalol in Ethiopia known as the 'hell hole of creation' where the temperature remains at 94 degrees year round. Here Nick will join miners who work all day with no shade, limited water and no protective clothing. The book and series consider how and why people lives in these harsh environments. How does Nick's body react to these contrasting extremes? He looks at the geographical and meteorological conditions. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER "A poignant and piercing examination of the phenomenon of tears—exhaustive, yes, but also open-ended. . . A deeply felt, and genuinely touching, book." —Esmé Weijun Wang, author of The Collected Schizophrenias "Spellbinding and propulsive—the map of a luminous mind in conversation with books, songs, friends, scientific theories, literary histories, her own jagged joy, and despair. Heather Christle is a visionary writer." —Leni Zumas, author of Red Clocks This bestselling "lyrical, moving book: part essay, part memoir, part surprising cultural study" is an examination of why we cry, how we cry, and what it means to cry from a woman on the cusp of motherhood confronting her own depression (The New York Times Book Review). Heather Christle has just lost a dear friend to suicide and now must reckon with her own depression and the birth of her first child. As she faces her grief and impending parenthood, she decides to research the act of crying: what it is and why people do it, even if they rarely talk about it. Along the way, she discovers an artist who designed a frozen–tear–shooting gun and a moth that feeds on the tears of other animals. She researches tear–collecting devices (lachrymatories) and explores the role white women’s tears play in racist violence. Honest, intelligent, rapturous, and surprising, Christle’s investigations look through a mosaic of science, history, and her own lived experience to find new ways of understanding life, loss, and mental illness. The Crying Book is a deeply personal tribute to the fascinating strangeness of tears and the unexpected resilience of joy.

Book Retracing a Winter s Journey

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan Youens
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2013-01-14
  • ISBN : 0801468280
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Retracing a Winter s Journey written by Susan Youens and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I like these songs better than all the rest, and someday you will too, Franz Schubert told the friends who were the first to hear his song cycle, Winterreise. These lieder have always found admiring audiences, but the poetry he chose to set them to has been widely regarded as weak and trivial. In Retracing a Winter's Journey, Susan Youens looks not only at Schubert's music but at the poetry, drawn from the works of Wilhelm Müller, who once wrote in his diary, "perhaps there is a kindred spirit somewhere who will hear the tunes behind the words and give them back to me!" Youens maintains that Müller, in depicting the wanderings of the alienated lover, produced poetry that was simple but not simple-minded, poetry that embraced simplicity as part of its meaning. In her view, Müller used the ruder folk forms to give his verse greater immediacy, to convey more powerfully the wanderer's complex inner state. Youens addresses many different aspects of Winterreise: the cultural milieu to which it belonged, the genesis of both the poetry and the music, Schubert's transformation of poetic cycle into music, the philosophical dimension of the work, and its musical structure.

Book The Wounded Woman

    Book Details:
  • Author : Linda Schierse Leonard
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 1982-01-01
  • ISBN : 0804040028
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book The Wounded Woman written by Linda Schierse Leonard and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an invaluable key to self-understanding. Using examples from her own life and the lives of her clients, as well as from dreams, fairy tales, myths, films, and literature, Linda Schierse Leonard, a Jungian analyst, exposes the wound of the spirit that both men and women of our culture bear—a wound that is grounded in a poor relationship between masculine and feminine principles. Leonard speculates that when a father is wounded in his own psychological development, he is not able to give his daughter the care and guidance she needs. Inheriting this wound, she may find that her ability to express herself professionally, intellectually, sexually, and socially is impaired. On a broader scale, Leonard discusses how women compensate for cultural devaluation, resorting to passive submission (“the Eternal Girl”), or a defensive imitation of the masculine (“the Armored Amazon”). The Wounded Woman shows that by understanding the father-daughter wound and working to transform it psychologically, it is possible to achieve a fruitful, caring relationship between men and women, between fathers and daughters, a relationship that honors both the mutuality and the uniqueness of the sexes.

Book Grief and Meter

  • Author : Sally Connolly
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2016-11-09
  • ISBN : 0813938651
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Grief and Meter written by Sally Connolly and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elegizing of poets is one of the oldest and most enduring traditions in English poetry. Many of the most influential and best-known poems in the language—such as Milton’s "Lycidas," Shelley’s "Adonais," and Auden’s "In Memory of W. B. Yeats"—are elegies for poets. In Grief and Meter, Sally Connolly offers the first book to focus on these poems and the role they play as a specific subgenre of elegy, establishing a genealogy of poetry that traces the dynamics of influence and inheritance in twentieth- and twenty-first-century poetry. She identifies a distinctive and significant Anglo-American line of descent that resonates in these poems, with British poets often elegizing American ones, yet rarely the other way around. Further, she reveals how these poems function as a means of mediating, effecting, and tracing transatlantic poetic exchanges. The author frames elegies for poets as a chain of commemoration and inheritance, each link independent, but when seen as part of the "golden chain," signifying a larger purpose and having a correspondingly greater strength. Grief and Meter provides a compelling account of how and why these poems are imbued with such power and significance.
