Book The Bioclimatology of Frost

Download or read book The Bioclimatology of Frost written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic costs of frosts in agriculture and horticulture in many parts of the world can be very significant. Reports in the media include accounts on how frosts have devastated coffee crops in Brazil or in Papua New Guinea, and how frosts have seriously damaged the Florida citrus industry. Frost may cause losses in current harvests or a decline in future yields through more permanent damage to trees and bushes. Damaging frosts may occur as infrequent, short-term events with sub-zero temperatures or with unusually severe winter temperatures which extend over long periods. In this book we have aimed at providing a comprehensive review of recent advances in the area of frost research. The stimulus for writing this book has come from the recognition that there is a shortage of recent texts which deal exclusively with the bioclimatology of frost. Bioclimatology deals with the relations between climate and life and the present text is particularly concerned with the effects of low temperatures on plants. Our purpose has been to assist researchers, engineers, extension officers and students in understanding the physical aspects of frost occurrence and frost distribution as well as the biological and phenological aspects of frost damage and to provide an overview of direct and indirect methods of frost pro tection and prevention.

Book Probabilistic Frost Forecasting in the Midwest and Southeast U S what are the Odds

Download or read book Probabilistic Frost Forecasting in the Midwest and Southeast U S what are the Odds written by Eric Wenke and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weather forecasts have a profound impact on agriculture. Frosts/Freezes have been known to affect commodity pricing, forecast implementation, and crop damage prevention. Multiple linear regression based off of the perfect prog method was used to qualitatively analyze probabilities of freezing temperatures. Cold air outbreaks in Florida (oranges) and in the Midwest (winter wheat) could be analyzed using surface observations, upper air data, pressure/temperature anomalies, soil moisture data, and climatology. The surface data (upper air data) was analyzed for 19 (2) stations in Florida and 39 (5) stations in the Midwest. The most significant teleconnections for both regions include: a positive PNA, negative AO, a positive EP-NP, and a negative NAO (only significant in Florida). Teleconnection lags yielded a general 4-7 day lag for various teleconnections across both regions. The PNA lag had a lag of only a day or less. Freeze lengths and severity were taken into account to determine the definition between a frost and a freeze. Using all of the past observations, models were created by region (GPvMs), by event type (ETMs), and by U.S. Climate Division (CDMs). In Florida, a significant warm-bias was observed during the 9 January 2010 advective frost event. This created the most performance error for any of the Florida models, even though the advective model statistically had the second-most explained variance for any model constructed in Florida. Probabilistic forecasting in Florida had a success rate of 89%, compared to 77% in the Midwest. In the Midwest, the GRM performed the best by far out of any other type of model with a majority of other models plagued by a warm-bias in excess of 3.00F. Insufficient data resolutions, both spatially and temporally, seemed to play a major role in the results of the Midwest.

Book Test and Validation of a Model for Forecasting Frost on Bridges

Download or read book Test and Validation of a Model for Forecasting Frost on Bridges written by Eugene S. Takle and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frost frequently forms on roads and bridges during winters when the pavement temperature is at or below 273 K and below the dew-point temperature. Accurate forecasts of frost onset times, frost intensity, and frost disappearance help roadway maintenance personnel decide when, where, and how much frost-suppression chemicals should be used. A finite-difference program has been developed that predicts bridge surface temperature by simulating vertical heat transfer in a bridge in response to evolving weather conditions. A vapor flux calculation uses the bridge surface temperature and concurrent meteorological variables from a weather forecast model to produce forecasts of depth of frost deposited, melted, or sublimed. Comparisons of model results with measured surface temperatures from a Roadway Weather Information Systems (RWIS) station have demonstrated that the model realistically represents early-morning low temperatures and temperature trends when run with input from current observations. Average surface temperature error using observations was 0.25 K. Some of the error can be attributed to spatial separation of the bridge site and the radiation observation site. BridgeT is capable of supplying surface temperatures within 1K of measured values over a 40-hour forecast period if it is supplied with accurate weather forecasts.

Book Frost Protection

Download or read book Frost Protection written by Richard L. Snyder and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When air temperatures fall below freezing point, sensitive crops can be injured, with significant effects on production. This publication discusses the distribution, economies, history, physical and biological aspects of frost damage, together with methods of protection. It contains a broad range of information but was mainly written to help growers to better understand freeze protection and to develop strategies to combat crop losses due to freezing. A related volume which focuses on concepts of probability and risk of frost damage is available separately (ISBN 9251053294).

Book Making Climate Forecasts Matter

Download or read book Making Climate Forecasts Matter written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Nino has been with us for centuries, but now we can forcast it, and thus can prepare far in advance for the extreme climatic events it brings. The emerging ability to forecast climate may be of tremendous value to humanity if we learn how to use the information well. How does society cope with seasonal-to-interannual climatic variations? How have climate forecasts been usedâ€"and how useful have they been? What kinds of forecast information are needed? Who is likely to benefit from forecasting skill? What are the benefits of better forecasting? This book reviews what we know about these and other questions and identifies research directions toward more useful seasonal-to-interannual climate forecasts. In approaching their recommendations, the panel explores: Vulnerability of human activities to climate. State of the science of climate forecasting. How societies coevolved with their climates and cope with variations in climate. How climate information should be disseminated to achieve the best response. How we can use forecasting to better manage the human consequences of climate change.

Book Cold Air Accumulation and the Grower s Guide to Frost Protection

Download or read book Cold Air Accumulation and the Grower s Guide to Frost Protection written by Steve Hammersmith and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After serving for more than a decade as a hydraulic systems designer and regional manager for Motion Industries (div. Genuine Parts Co.), and then as president and chief hydraulics designer for RPT Industrial Technologies for another nine years, Steve studied and apprenticed for more than eight years under Dr. Rafael Guarga, Eng. prof. emeritus and president of the University of Uruguay. During that time, they collaborated and developed a new frost protection method of controlling cold air flows and draining accumulated cold air masses. An avid sportsman, over the last thirty-five years Steve has devoted much of his spare time to introducing underprivileged children to outdoor sports such as fishing and hunting through a nonprofit organization called the Annual Wild Game Feed. Steve now lives in Crestline, California, and enjoys weekends at the lake with his daughters. He is currently president and CEO of Shur Farms Frost Protection, a company specializing in managing cold air flows in vineyards and orchards worldwide. His speaking engagements range from Chihuahua, Mexico, to Ontario, Canada, and virtually every growing region in the United States. His articles and research in frost protection are regularly published in trade journals throughout the world.
