Book New Challenges and Future Perspectives in Nutrition and Sustainable Diets in Africa

Download or read book New Challenges and Future Perspectives in Nutrition and Sustainable Diets in Africa written by Hettie Carina Schönfeldt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is confronted with the triple burden of malnutrition; it is also faced with the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment. In many African countries, large proportions of the population rely on agriculture not only for their food - but also for their livelihoods. A transformed agricultural and food system is thus a necessary condition for addressing this double-triple challenge. Additionally, post harvest and food waste and losses reduce the availability of sufficient quantities of safe, edible and preferable foods. At least one third of food produced at farm level is lost due to inappropriate storage, infrastructure and agro-processing technologies in developing countries; and one third of food purchased is wasted at household and retail level.

Book Nutrition and Behavior 2nd Edition

Download or read book Nutrition and Behavior 2nd Edition written by John Worobey and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between nutrition and behaviour is bi-directional in nature, with nutritional factors able to affect activity and disposition, and behavior impacting diet and food intake. This book reviews these links, starting with their complex neurobiological basis, such as in the case of folate deficiency and cognitive decline. It also illustrates how behaviour may determine nutritional choices or status through peer modelling and poor dietary habits. Micronutrients and eating disorders are then critically addressed, with a review of current research methods and results, before extra-nutritional influencers on behaviour such as caffeine, herbal supplements and alcohol are discussed in the final section.

Book Sustainable Diets

Download or read book Sustainable Diets written by Barbara Burlingame and published by CABI. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a transdisciplinary approach and considers multisectoral actions, integrating health, agriculture, environment, economy, and socio-cultural issues, to comprehensively explore the topic of sustainable diets. Consideration is given to the multi-dimensional nature of diets and food systems, and the book explores the challenging issues connecting food security and nutrition to sustainability, culture, tradition, and a broader range of scientific topics. The first section, 'Grand Challenges' (chapters 1-9), positions sustainable diets in the multi-perspective context of food systems. Within the current international debate, it introduces some overarching wicked problems, resistant to resolution in spite of the dire consequences of inaction. The chapters cover multi-sectoral policy, public health, sustainable food systems, climate change, biodiversity loss, agro-ecology, indigenous peoples, the role of cities, and food and waste. The contributions in the second section, 'Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches' (chapters 10-17) discuss the topic of sustainable diets from different cultural, sectoral and disciplinary angles. The issues are analysed with data and methods derived from social sciences, clinical sciences and experimental sciences. Perspectives and solutions, with evidence, are presented to underpin policies and interventions. The last section, 'Moving Forward' (chapters 18-29) deals with selected innovations, initiatives, projects, case studies and programmes enhancing sustainable diets by linking nutrition to food systems.
