Book Present Concepts in Internal Medicine Volume VII Number 1 January February 1974 Lung Cancer Symposium

Download or read book Present Concepts in Internal Medicine Volume VII Number 1 January February 1974 Lung Cancer Symposium written by Edward E. Mays and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium, a collection of eleven articles, was originally presented as a series of lectures in the autumn of 1973. The authors have refined them for a reading audience, updated some of the information, and added a summary article. The symposium addresses itself to the different types of lung cancer, the varied clinical and roentgenographic presentations, the surgical, radiation and chemotherapeutic techniques and finally a philosophical look at the overall problem. With a latent period of 30 to 40 years between onset of smoking exposure and onset of lung cancer, we are in the midst of an epidemic spawned among American men and women during World Wars I and II. With the Korean and Vietnamese Wars following closely, we as clinicians face an onset of lung cancers without foreseeable end. (Modified author abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I consider it an honor to have been asked to write the Foreword for The Diabetic Pancreas. Although I have been involved in the study of the pancreas since 1921, my interest goes back even further to the time, in 1918, that my father's sister, a nurse who had trained at the Massachusetts General Hospit.al, devel oped diabetes, lost weight, and died in diabetic coma. This sad event made a deep impression on me and was certainly pardy responsible for my choosing to join the Department of Physiology of the University of Toronto to begin a career in research into diabetes. This is not the place to describe in detail the wide-ranging research and study of the diabetic pancreas in which I have engaged in the past 56 years. Suffice it to say that I am familiar enough with the subject area to be able to predict a great future for this book. The editors have undertaken a very ambitious and worthwhile project, and their efforts have been supported and strengthened by contributors who are respected authorities in their fields, thus ensuring a successful presentation of this major work.

Book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des recherches pharmaceutiques

Download or read book Progress in Drug Research Fortschritte der Arzneimittelforschung Progr s des recherches pharmaceutiques written by Ernst Jucker and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 47 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains eight reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with inotropic steroids, with chemokines and their involvement in a wide range of inflam matory diseases, with the subclassification and nomenclature of ul- and Uz-adrenoceptors, with Chinese traditional medicine, with drug targets in the molecular pathogenesis of asthma, with cytokines and their therapeutic application in immunosuppression and immunostimulation, with alter native medicine and with the potential use of calcium blockers in psy chiatry. These reviews and the quotations of original articles provide the reader with valuable information on several new developments in the world-wide search for new and better medicines. In 1959, when the Editor started this series of monographs, it was his intention to help disseminate informa tion on the vast and fast growing domain of drug research. Already at that time,it was not possible to follow the major individual publications in this field, and the reader was thereby provided with a tool to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends. This goal remained unchanged over the last 37 years, and I believe that the reviews in PDR are useful to the non-specialist who can obtain an overview of a particular field of drug research in a relatively short time.
