A brilliant work of practical philosophy, Frontiers of Justice is dedicated to this proposition. Taking up three urgent problems of social justice--those with physical and mental disabilities, all citizens of the world, and nonhuman animals--neglected by current theories and thus harder to tackle in practical terms and everyday life, Martha Nussbaum seeks a theory of social justice that can guide us to a richer, more responsive approach to social cooperation.

Book FRONTIER JUSTICE A COLLECTION OF WESTERN FICTION CLASSICS SERIES 8

Download or read book FRONTIER JUSTICE A COLLECTION OF WESTERN FICTION CLASSICS SERIES 8 written by Dr IME BEN and published by IME BEN. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Title: Frontier Justice: A Collection of Western Fiction Classics, Series 6 Summary: Frontier Justice: A Collection of Western Fiction Classics, Series 6 by Ime Ben is a riveting anthology that delves into the raw and rugged world of the American frontier. Through ten masterfully crafted stories, this collection explores themes of survival, justice, and moral ambiguity in a time when law and order were fragile concepts, and each individual’s strength and integrity were put to the ultimate test. Significance: This collection is not merely a nostalgic journey into the past but a critical exploration of the foundational values that have shaped modern society. The tales of frontier life highlight the perpetual struggle between justice and lawlessness, individualism and community, and the pursuit of freedom in a harsh and often unforgiving environment. These stories serve as a lens through which we can examine our contemporary struggles, reminding us of the importance of resilience, moral courage, and the ongoing fight for fairness in an increasingly complex world. Impact on Our Future: Frontier Justice resonates deeply with current social issues, offering timeless lessons on leadership, the rule of law, and the balance between individual rights and collective responsibility. The characters' battles for justice, often fought against overwhelming odds, echo the modern quest for equity and the protection of human rights. By revisiting the moral dilemmas and triumphs of the past, readers are encouraged to reflect on how these lessons can inform our responses to today’s challenges, particularly in creating a more just and inclusive society. Importance for Social Justice and a Sustainable Future: In an era where social justice movements are gaining momentum, Frontier Justice offers valuable insights into the roots of justice and its application in society. The stories emphasize the necessity of standing up against injustice, even when the odds seem insurmountable, and the importance of community solidarity in the face of adversity. Moreover, the sustainable practices of frontier life—marked by self-reliance, resourcefulness, and respect for the land—provide a model for addressing the ecological and social issues of today. The narratives remind us that sustainability is not just an environmental concern but also a social one, where justice and equality must be at the forefront of our efforts to build a future where all can thrive. Through its compelling storytelling, Frontier Justice: A Collection of Western Fiction Classics, Series 6 serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring relevance of the values that shaped the American frontier, offering inspiration and guidance as we navigate the complexities of the modern world.

Book excerpt: Midnight raids, blazing six-shooters, and dangling ropes played frequent and vital roles in the taming of the West. And in this true account of justice--and sometimes vengeance--on the frontier, Wayne Gard ably relates how determined frontiersmen and heroic women achieved order before they had formal law. Colorful Roy Bean, most famous of the frontier oracles, who dispensed liquor with one hand and justice with the other, stalks through the pages, along with Sam Houston, Watt Moorman, Judge Almond (who would not tolerate long speeches by lawyers because they cut down on his fine), the feuding Grahams and Tewksburys, and Jacksons and Goodbreads, with their violent outbreaks of killing. Frontier Justice was among the books chosen by a committee of distinguished scholars for inclusion in the permanent White House Liberty of important American books on the nation's history.

Book The Good the Bad and the Ancient

Download or read book The Good the Bad and the Ancient written by Sue Matheson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Americans are no longer compelled to learn Greek and Latin, classical ideals remain embedded in American law and politics, philosophy, oratory, history and especially popular culture. In the Western genre, many film and television directors (such as John Ford, Raoul Walsh, Howard Hawks, Anthony Mann and Sam Peckinpah) have drawn inspiration from antiquity, and the classical values and influences in their work have shaped our conceptions of the West for years. This thought-provoking, first-of-its-kind collection of essays celebrates, affirms and critiques the West's relationship with the classical world. Explored are films like Cheyenne Autumn, The Wild Bunch, The Track of the Cat, Trooper Hook, The Furies, Heaven's Gate, and Slow West, as well as serials like Gunsmoke and Lonesome Dove.

Book Frontier Fieldwork

Download or read book Frontier Fieldwork written by Andres Rodriguez and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centre may hold, but borders can fray. Frontier Fieldwork explores the work of social scientists, agriculturists, photographers, and missionaries who took to the field in China’s southwest at a time when foreign political powers were contesting China’s claims over its frontiers. In the early twentieth century, when the threat of imperialism loomed large in the Sino-Tibetan borderlands, these fieldworkers undertook a nation-building exercise to unite a disparate, multi-ethnic population. Andres Rodriguez exposes the transformative power of the fieldworkers’ efforts, which placed China’s margins at the centre of its nation-making process and race to modernity.

Book The Broken Heart of America

Download or read book The Broken Heart of America written by Walter Johnson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing portrait of the racial dynamics that lie inescapably at the heart of our nation, told through the turbulent history of the city of St. Louis. From Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition to the 2014 uprising in Ferguson, American history has been made in St. Louis. And as Walter Johnson shows in this searing book, the city exemplifies how imperialism, racism, and capitalism have persistently entwined to corrupt the nation's past. St. Louis was a staging post for Indian removal and imperial expansion, and its wealth grew on the backs of its poor black residents, from slavery through redlining and urban renewal. But it was once also America's most radical city, home to anti-capitalist immigrants, the Civil War's first general emancipation, and the nation's first general strike—a legacy of resistance that endures. A blistering history of a city's rise and decline, The Broken Heart of America will forever change how we think about the United States.

Book U S Latinos and Criminal Injustice

Download or read book U S Latinos and Criminal Injustice written by Lupe S. Salinas and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos in the United States encompass a broad range of racial, socioeconomic, and sociopolitical identities. Originating from the Caribbean, Spain, Central and South America, and Mexico, they have unique justice concerns. The ethnic group includes U.S. citizens, authorized resident aliens, and undocumented aliens, a group that has been a constant partner in the Latino legal landscape for over a century. This book addresses the development and rapid growth of the Latino population in the United States and how race-based discrimination, hate crimes, and other prejudicial attitudes, some of which have been codified via public policy, have grown in response. Salinas explores the degrading practice of racial profiling, an approach used by both federal and state law enforcement agents; the abuse in immigration enforcement; and the use of deadly force against immigrants. The author also discusses the barriers Latinos encounter as they wend their way through the court system. While all minorities face the barrier of racially based jury strikes, bilingual Latinos deal with additional concerns, since limited-English-proficient defendants depend on interpreters to understand the trial process. As a nation rich in ethnic and racial backgrounds, the United States, Salinas argues, should better strive to serve its principles of justice.
