Book The Social Engagement of Social Science Volume 2

Download or read book The Social Engagement of Social Science Volume 2 written by Eric Trist and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II brought together a group of psychiatrists and clinical and social psychologists in the British Army where they developed radical, action-oriented innovations in social psychiatry. They became known as the "Tavistock Group" since the core members had been at the pre-war Tavistock Clinic. They created the post-war Tavistock Institute of Human Relations and expanded on their wartime achievements by pioneering a new mode of relating theory and practice, called in these volumes, "The Social Engagement of Social Science." There are three perspectives: the socio-psychological, the socio-technical, and the socio-ecological. These perspectives are interdependent, yet each has its own focus and is represented in a separate volume. The Institute's dynamic social science approach to industrial problems, presented in this second volume, began with Eric Trist's coal-mining program for the development of more productive and personally satisfying self-regulating forms of work organization. The whole "Quality of Life" movement owes its theoretical and empirical basis to this pathfinding endeavor. Volume I, The Socio-Psychological Perspective, extended the object-relations approach in psychoanalysis to group, organizational, and wider social life. This extension is related to field theory, the personality/culture approach, and open systems theory. Action-oriented papers deal with key ideas in social psychiatry, varieties of group process, new paths in family studies, the dynamics of organizational change, and the unconscious in culture and society. Volume III will focus on non-hierarchical forms of organization facilitating inter-organizational relations in complex and rapidly changing environments—the socio-ecological perspective. This perspective is offered as a guide to institution building for the future.

Book excerpt: Stages of Engagement is a compelling and wonderfully varied account of the relationship between theatre in the United States and the social, cultural, and political forces that shaped it during one of the most formative periods in the nation’s history. Joshua E. Polster applies key thematic perspectives – Colonialism, Religion, Race and Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality, Economic Systems, and Systems of Government – to seminal moments in US history. In doing so he explores the ways in which the theatre has responded to these turning points, through the work of some of its principal dramatists, directors, designers, and theatre companies. His approach tackles questions such as: • How did the plays of this period reflect the nation’s concerns and anxieties? • How did theatre, culture, and politics interconnect as the United States took to the world stage? • Which critical viewpoints are most useful to us when examining these cultural phenomena? • How did performances and productions attempt to influence their audiences' social and civic engagement? On its own, or in tandem with its companion volume The Routledge Anthology of US Drama 1898–1949, this is the ideal text for any course in US Theatre. By examining each cultural moment from a range of critical perspectives and drawing upon a diverse range of sources, it is designed specifically for today’s interdisciplinary and multicultural curriculum.

Book Simplified Signs A Manual Sign Communication System for Special Populations Volume 2

Download or read book Simplified Signs A Manual Sign Communication System for Special Populations Volume 2 written by John D. Bonvillian and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplified Signs presents a system of manual sign communication intended for special populations who have had limited success mastering spoken or full sign languages. It is the culmination of over twenty years of research and development by the authors. The Simplified Sign System has been developed and tested for ease of sign comprehension, memorization, and formation by limiting the complexity of the motor skills required to form each sign, and by ensuring that each sign visually resembles the meaning it conveys. Volume 1 outlines the research underpinning and informing the project, and places the Simplified Sign System in a wider context of sign usage, historically and by different populations. Volume 2 presents the lexicon of signs, totalling approximately 1000 signs, each with a clear illustration and a written description of how the sign is formed, as well as a memory aid that connects the sign visually to the meaning that it conveys. While the Simplified Sign System originally was developed to meet the needs of persons with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, or aphasia, it may also assist the communication needs of a wider audience – such as healthcare professionals, aid workers, military personnel , travellers or parents, and children who have not yet mastered spoken language. The system also has been shown to enhance learning for individuals studying a foreign language. Lucid and comprehensive, this work constitutes a valuable resource that will enhance the communicative interactions of many different people, and will be of great interest to researchers and educators alike.

Book Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color Volume 2

Download or read book Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color Volume 2 written by Rihana Shiri Mason and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-29 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume serves as a companion to Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color, Volume I. It focuses on the dissertations of 20 builders, women of color who earned their doctoral degrees in psychology prior to 1990 and who were leaders in the field through their leadership or innovation. An introductory chapter bridges the two volumes. Each subsequent chapter summarizes and examines a dissertation using a consistent format, including a biographical sketch of the builder with an emphasis on her significant contribution to an organization or innovation that moved the field forward, a summary of the dissertation, a reproducibility critique of the dissertation, and an alternative framework section that analyzes the dissertation from a modern theoretical perspective or methodological approach (e.g., feminist theory, liberation psychology, mestiza consciousness, etc.). The topics cover the breadth of the discipline of psychology, including physiological, cognitive, developmental, social, and clinical. Some topics are also relevant to business, education, medicine, and social work. The varying nature of these dissertations allows the book to be used to augment coursework either as a complete collection or as individual chapters. This volume is intended for both instructors and students. The course activities provide examples of how to integrate key aspects of the dissertation research into the classroom. The volume was written with upper-level undergraduate students in mind so that it could be used across the psychology curriculum, but the editors envision this book as a potential graduate-level text as well.
