Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a single work from the Arter Collection in each title, Arter Close-Up series continues its journey, following Sarkis’ iconic work Çaylak Sokak, with an in-depth look at the interactive installation Rainforest V (variation 3). Acquired for the collection in 2018, the work marks a significant turning point in contemporary art history. Drawing on the presentation of the work in Arter’s Karbon performance hall (10 September 2020–30 January 2022), the publication grows out of a conversation between Melih Fereli, Arter’s Founding Director and the exhibition’s curator, and John Driscoll & Phil Edelstein, highlighting the evolution of Rainforest, the collaborations cultivated around it, the social rituals of CIE (Composers Inside Electronics, Inc.), its installation process at Arter, and the seeds sown for future initiatives. Designed by Esen Karol, the book features photographs taken by Orhan Cem Çetin from the exhibition at Arter alongside archival photographs that take readers on a journey through the universe of Rainforest. The choreographer Merce Cunningham commissioned David Tudor in 1968 to create a music work Rainforest for his similarly titled dance project. Rainforest V (variation 3) was developed by composers John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein of CIE into a self-performing sound installation building upon their past Rainforest IV collaboration with David Tudor. The presentation of Rainforest V (variation 3) in Arter’s Karbon marked the world premiere of the third variation.

Book Hong on the Range

Download or read book Hong on the Range written by William F. Wu and published by Boruma Publishing. This book was released on with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this science fiction satire of westerns, after the American West was destroyed in a series of biological disasters, rebuilding it is a lot like building it in the first place, but there are crucial differences. For example, new, partly mechanical cattle with computer brains are called steerites. They speak and sing a lot more than the original steers. Most of the cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen are partly mechanical, too, except for those few humans called control-naturals. That group has to keep all their original equipment, just like the original cowboys. Louie Hong is one of those control-naturals, and life isn't easy for him. Most folks look down on a man who doesn't have at least one bionic hand. Yet Louie Hong is determined to make his way in the new Wild West. All Hong has to do is explain to the bounty hunters who are after him for robbing a bank, and the outlaw gang that is after him for stealing the loot, that he hadn't done any of it. With a little bit of luck, and the help of Chuck, his steerite companion, Hong hopes to find a home on the range that nobody can take away—not outlaws, not bounty hunters, not cyborgs, not even singing steerites. In Hong on the Range, William F. Wu has returned to the high-tech Wild West world of his Hugo and Nebula Award finalist short story, "Hong's Bluff," and written a rousing, funny science fiction saga complete with cyborg cowboys and outlaws. It is an exciting and witty subgenre of science fiction: The cyber western. This novel was chosen by the American Library Association, Booklist, and the Library Journal for their recommended and best of the year lists. ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~ First I could only see that something large was displacing the tall buffalo grass ahead. Then I reached the spot and found a steerite lying down with his steel legs neatly folded underneath him. They gleamed silver in the sun and his hinged metal tail swished back and forth, its brush swatting the flies that buzzed around the natural hide of his meaty, biological middle. As I pulled my battered hat off by the brim and squinted at the steerite, he turned his steel bovine head toward me, short horns and all. "Hi, there," I said. "Hello," he answered pleasantly. He had been programmed with excellent enunciation and a trace of a Boston accent. "Good day to you. Where are you bound?" I untied my red bandana and wiped off my forehead with it. "I'm going to Femur to look for a job. Pardon my asking, but ... have you lost your herd? What are you doing here?" "I am merely waiting. Have I lost my herd? More accurately, my herd has been rustled." "Rustled?" "I dutifully escaped. None of my comrades succeeded in this endeavor. Since our trail crew ran off, I have no trail boss to whom I must report. Nor am I honor bound to join the herd after it has been rustled." I nodded toward the mark stamped onto the shining metal base of his tail, where it extended from his natural hindquarters. "Waiting for what? You still have your serial number." "Oh, yes. I am fully programmed and ready to report to any authority who can restore me to my legal owner." "Who's that?" "I don't know. We get basic programming for herding, pasturing, and speech, but little precise data. Of course, we can accumulate information as we go, but no one ever told me the owner's name or where to locate him." "I guess the trail crew was supposed to get you there?” "Indeed they were, those cowardly louts." He lowered his head modestly. "I am led to believe that my mechanical parts are quite expensive. Not to mention my beef."

Book excerpt: The Sundown Speech, a hot new Amos Walker mystery by Loren D. Estleman, the master of the hard-boiled detective novel. Amos Walker is hired by Helen and Dante Gunner, a bohemian Ann Arbor couple, to find Jerry Marcus, a film director who has disappeared with their investment money. It's one of Walker's easiest jobs to date. In just a few short hours, Walker locates Marcus in his bedroom...murdered, his body shoved into a cupboard, a bullet through his head. This case is opened and shut quickly, but Walker can't quite let it go. When Dante is arrested for the murder Walker finds himself again in Helen's employ, this time trying to prove that Dante didn't do it. When Walker interviews Holly Zacharias, a college student who was the last person to see Marcus alive, things get interesting. Because if Marcus is dead, and Dante is his killer, then who is driving by in the Crown Vic, shooting at Walker and Holly? Jerry Marcus just might still be alive, and his plans may be worse than anything Walker can imagine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tom Perrotta is an auto-buy for me. He's one of the great writers that we have today. I love this book. You'll read it fast. It moves you. He's so authentic. And you'll see what happened to Tracy Flick.” —Harlan Coben A pitch-perfect novel about ambition, coming-of-age in adulthood, and never really leaving high school politics behind—featuring New York Times bestselling author Tom Perrotta’s most iconic character of all time. Tracy Flick is a hardworking assistant principal at a public high school in suburban New Jersey. Still ambitious but feeling a little stuck and underappreciated in midlife, Tracy gets a jolt of good news when the longtime principal, Jack Weede, abruptly announces his retirement, creating a rare opportunity for Tracy to ascend to the top job. Energized by the prospect of her long-overdue promotion, Tracy throws herself into her work with renewed zeal, determined to prove her worth to the students, faculty, and School Board, while also managing her personal life—a ten-year-old daughter, a needy doctor boyfriend, and a burgeoning meditation practice. But nothing ever comes easily to Tracy Flick, no matter how diligent or qualified she happens to be. Among her many other responsibilities, Tracy is enlisted to serve on the Selection Committee for the brand-new Green Meadow High School Hall of Fame. Her male colleagues’ determination to honor Vito Falcone—a star quarterback of dubious character who had a brief, undistinguished career in the NFL—triggers bad memories for Tracy, and leads her to troubling reflections about the trajectory of her own life and the forces that have left her feeling thwarted and disappointed, unable to fulfill her true potential. As she broods on the past, Tracy becomes aware of storm clouds brewing in the present. Is she really a shoo-in for the Principal job? Is the Superintendent plotting against her? Why is the School Board President’s wife trying so hard to be her friend? And why can’t she ever get what she deserves? In classic Perrotta style, Tracy Flick Can’t Win is a sharp, darkly comic, and pitch-perfect reflection on our current moment. Flick fans and newcomers alike will love this compelling novel chronicling the second act of one of the most memorable characters of our time.
