Book From Tokio Through Manchuria with the Japanese Classic Reprint

Download or read book From Tokio Through Manchuria with the Japanese Classic Reprint written by Louis Livingston Seaman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Tokio Through Manchuria With the Japanese With this national sentiment so pronounced, and with every person in the kingdom, man, woman or child, almost overwrought by the intensity of their patriotism, the Visitor from other lands is astonished to find that there is little outward indication in Japan itself of a war which means a life-or-death struggle to the kingdom. Probably the most astonishing thing to the stranger is the complete absence of military pomp or show. Outside of the im mediate neighborhood of the War Depart ment and other military headquarters in the empire, one does not see a soldier in uniform. The great cities of the empire are occupied with the every-day realities of life, just as be fore hostilities began, and except for occasions which arouse the patriotic spirit, when flags and banners are brought out and great crowds assemble to shout Banzai Nippon, the daily routine of labor goes on in the even tenor of its way, just as if no war existed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shall Disease Triumph in Our Army: Extracts From a Volume Entitled, "From Tokio Through Manchuria With the Japanese" In times of peace the American people will not allow the maintenance of a large standing army, its presence being considered, justly or otherwise, a men ace to republican institutions. It is, therefore, more necessary to us than to any other country to have the most perfect and most eficient military system in the world; a system whose elasticity will be sufficiently great to permit of its rapid expansion in the emer geney of war, when its great working forces must be drawn from civil life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Following the Sun-Flag: A Vain Pursuit Through Manchuria After a long still-hunt in Tokio, and a long pursuit through Manchuria, following that Sun-Flag of Japan, I gave up the chase at Liaoyang. Not being a military expert, my purpose was simply to see under that flag the brown little "gun-man" - as he calls himself in his own tongue - in camp and on the march, in trench and in open field, in assault and in retreat; to tell tales of his heroism, chivalry, devotion, sacrifice, incomparable patriotism; to see him fighting, wounded - and, since such things in war must be - dying, dead. After seven months my spoils of war were post-mortem battle-fields, wounded convalescents in hospitals, deserted trenches, a few graves, and one Russian prisoner in a red shirt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this history of Japanese involvement in northeast China, the author argues that Japan’s military seizure of Manchuria in September 1931 was founded on three decades of infiltration of the area. This incremental empire-building and its effect on Japan are the focuses of this book. The principal agency in the piecemeal growth of Japanese colonization was the South Manchurian Railway Company, and by the mid-1920s Japan had a deeply entrenched presence in Manchuria and exercised a dominant economic and political influence over the area. Japanese colonial expansion in Manchuria also loomed large in Japanese politics, military policy, economic development, and foreign relations and deeply influenced many aspects of Japan’s interwar history."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown Face and White: A Story of Japan A man's voice, deep and sonorous, called in the exquisite twilight of a Japanese summer evening. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. II HARDSHIPS OF THE CAMPAIGN I Have taken to the big hills in some despair and to rest from the hardships of this campaign. Truly the life of the war correspondent is hard in Japan. The Happy Exile left America three years ago with a Puck-purpose of girdling the world. He got no farther than Japan, and here most likely he will rest. He is a big man and a gentle one, and I have seen his six-feet-two frame quiver with joy like jelly as we rickshawed through the streets, he pointing out to me meanwhile little bits of color and life on either side. I have heard him when the dusk rushes seaward muttering half-unconsciously to himself: "I'm so glad I am here. I'm so glad I am here." It is the " lust of the eye " he says, and the lust is as fierce now as on the day he landed --which is rare; for the man who has been here before has genuine envy of the eye that sees Japan for the first time. I have watched the man who has seen, showing around the man who has not, with a look of benevolent sympathy and reflected joy such as one may catch on the face of a middle-aged gentleman in the theatre who is watching the keen delight of some youth to whom he is showing the sights of a great city. The Happy Exile was a painter once, but he came, saw Japanese art, and was conquered. "I have never touched brush to canvas again. What's the use? Why, I can't even draw their characters. Other nations draw this way "; he worked his hands and fingers from the wrist and elbow. "The Japanese learn, drawing their characters in childhood, to use the whole arm. Imagine the breadth and sweep of movement!" The Happy Exile threw up both hands. "It's of no use, at least not for me. I have given it up." So he studies life and Myth in Japan, collects curios, silks, and...

Book excerpt: "Like all empires, Japan’s prewar empire encompassed diverse territories as well as a variety of political forms for governing such spaces. This book focuses on Japan’s Kwantung Leasehold and Railway Zone in China’s three northeastern provinces. The hybrid nature of the leasehold’s political status vis-à-vis the metropole, the presence of the semipublic and enormously powerful South Manchuria Railway Company, and the region’s vulnerability to inter-imperial rivalries, intra-imperial competition, and Chinese nationalism throughout the first decades of the twentieth century combined to give rise to a distinctive type of settler politics. Settlers sought inclusion within a broad Japanese imperial sphere while successfully utilizing the continental space as a site for political and social innovation. In this study, Emer O’Dwyer traces the history of Japan’s prewar Manchurian empire over four decades, mapping how South Manchuria—and especially its principal city, Dairen—was naturalized as a Japanese space and revealing how this process ultimately contributed to the success of the Japanese army’s early 1930s takeover of Manchuria. Simultaneously, Significant Soil demonstrates the conditional nature of popular support for Kwantung Army state-building in Manchukuo, highlighting the settlers’ determination that the Kwantung Leasehold and Railway Zone remain separate from the project of total empire."
