Download or read book Pest status guide written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide describes the steps that national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) should follow when determining the status of a pest in an area, starting with identifying the pest and the area under consideration. It provides guidance on gathering and evaluating information, assessing sources of uncertainty, and how to use pest records and other relevant information to determine whether a pest is absent or present in the area and then to select the appropriate pest status category, as described in ISPM 8 (Determination of pest status in an area). This includes guidance on determining whether a pest is expected to establish in an area, and whether it is widely distributed or under official control. The guide describes the responsibilities of NPPOs when determining the status of pests within their territories, the requirements for national legislation to support actions relevant to pest status and how pest status determination fits within the international phytosanitary framework. It also describes how the outcomes of pest status determination may be used to support other key activities, such as preparing regulated pest lists, pest reporting, and securing or maintaining market access. Finally, the guide provides a number of case studies from around the world that highlight different aspects of the pest status determination process and how NPPOs deal with particular issues. By providing a deeper understanding of the process and the factors that should be considered when determining pest status, the guide aims to improve consistency in the processes used by NPPOs to make pest status determinations.

Download or read book Managing Turfgrass Pests Second Edition written by Thomas L. Watschke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by three of the top professionals in the turfgrass field, Managing Turfgrass Pests, Second Edition brings together hundreds of solutions and best practices to help you manage turfgrass weeds, diseases, and insects more effectively. Since the publication of the bestselling first edition, advances in pest-resistant turfgrass cultivars and pest control products have led to significant changes in the ways pests are managed. This revised and updated second edition reinforces those management tactics that are still relevant and covers new approaches that have been introduced since the first edition. The book discusses the concept of integrated pest management, incorporating cultural, biological, and chemical control measures. In particular, the authors emphasize the philosophy of minimizing pests through well-defined and well-implemented cultural systems. Rather than simply relying on a pesticide solution for control, they explain how to fine-tune cultural practices to better address the question of why the pest is present in the first place. Once these cultural practices are in place, any pesticide that is still required will be much more effective at controlling the pest. New in This Edition Revised and updated descriptions of economically important turfgrass pests Revised and updated cultural approaches to turfgrass pest management Revised and updated biological methods of turfgrass pest management Revised and updated chemical control of turfgrass pests More than 200 new color illustrations Packed with photographs, this full-color book provides updated information on best practices and control measures for turfgrass pest management. It also explains how to integrate various management strategies to ensure quality and functional turf. Throughout, the authors offer practical recommendations to help you optimize the competitiveness of your turfgrass against the pests that inevitably become part of any ecosystem.

Download or read book Guidelines on phytosanitary procedures for area wide management of fruit fly pests written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guideline describes the most widely used classic and modern phytosanitary procedures for the management of fruit flies that infest fruits and vegetables and that are of quarantine and economic importance, specifically species of the genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera, Ceratitis, Dacus, Rhagoletis and Zeugodacus. Pest management can be aimed at the native species of fruit flies or to prevent the introduction, establishment and spread of non-native species. This document is the first comprehensive guideline developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the united Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for area-wide fruit fly pest management including area-wide suppression, containment, eradication, and exclusion strategies. It is a much-needed complement to the already published FAO/IAEA guidelines for fruit fly survey “Trapping Guidelines for Area-wide Fruit Fly Programmes” and “Fruit Sampling Guidelines for Area-Wide Fruit Fly Programmes”.

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management for Collections written by Peter Windsor and published by English Heritage. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated pest management (IPM) is not a static approach but one that is constantly evolving. Mass international travel, climate change and other factors contribute to the spread of new pests, and the pests themselves are constantly seeking out weaknesses in our defences. An understanding of the threats pests pose to collections and the necessity for a systematic approach to combat them is now firmly embedded in the work of collection care practitioners. In addition, the trustees and sponsoring bodies of collecting institutions recognise that it is a significant and cost-effective element of good collections management. 2011: A Pest Odyssey, 10 years later describes examples of how the IPM approach has been adopted by large and small institutions around the world, and highlights the many lessons learned along the way. Principal among these is never to become complacent and tied down to routine processes. Another important lesson is the need to ensure colleagues understand and are involved with the process of pest management. There is also a need to understand the wider implications of any pest control activity, for example the effect of chemical treatments on DNA. Coming out of the second Pest Odyssey conference, this book will promote wider understanding and implementation of IPM as an integral part of any collection management programme. The organisers and editorial team hope that everyone involved with the care of cultural heritage collections and buildings will find something of interest and value in this work.
Download or read book Pesticide Management and Insecticide Resistance written by David Watson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticide Management and Insecticide Resistance explores the problem of insect resistance to pesticides and reviews various approaches to pesticide management and safety. It looks at the environmental hazards of pesticide residues and their regulation, along with application techniques aimed at maximum efficiency against the pest and minimum waste to pollution, safety considerations in the development of pest control programs, and pesticide monitoring. Divided into eight parts encompassing 49 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the global pesticide industry and the costs of commercializing pesticides relative to their profit potential. It then introduces the reader to the release of fluorohydrocarbon propellants in pesticidal aerosols and their hazards to the ozone layer, management of pests in urban environments, international plant protection, the current status of DDT, the importance of training pest-control personnel, and procedures of forest spraying. Other chapters focus on pesticide management safety from a medical perspective; pesticide safety as it relates to the manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution of pesticides; importance of pesticide application equipment and related field practices in developing countries; and the importance of pesticides in successful pest management programs. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, students, researchers, and policymakers who want to ensure the safety of consumers, applicators, and harvesters when using pesticides.
