Book excerpt: The traditional textiles of Central Asia are unknown treasures. Straddling the legendary Silk Road, this vast region stretches from Russia in the west to China in the east. Whether nomadic or sedentary, its peoples created textiles for every aspect of their way of life, from ceremonial objects marking rites of passage, to everyday garments, to practical items for the home. There were suzanis for the marriage bed; prayer mats; patchwork quilts; bridal ensembles; bags for tea, scissors, and mirrors; lovingly embroidered hats and bibs; and robes of every color and pattern. Author Susan Meller has spent years assembling the 590 textiles illustrated in this book. She documents their history, use, and meaning through archival photographs and fascinating travelers’ narratives spanning many centuries. Her book will be a revelation to designers, collectors, students of Central Asia, and travelers to the region. Silk and Cotton is destined to become a classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented in this volume significantly extends what has been known to date of Asian textiles produced from the Tang (618-907) through the early Ming period (late 14th-early 15th century), and new documentation gives full recognition to the importance of luxury textiles in the history of Asian art. Costly silks and embroideries were the primary vehicle for the migration of motifs and styles from one part of Asia to another, particularly during the Tang and Mongol (1207-1368) periods. In addition, they provide material evidence of both the cultural and religious ties that linked ethnic groups and the impetus to artistic creativity that was inspired by exposure to foreign goods.

Book excerpt: The demise of the Silk Roads and the end of expansionist policies, together with the rapid increase in maritime trade, brought to an end the vital economic and cultural interchange that had characterized the years preceding the death of the Ming-dynasty Yongle emperor in 1424. Overland, intrepid merchants no longer transported silks throughout Eurasia and weavers no longer traveled to distant lands. But the products that survive from that wondrous time attest to a glorious era - when silk was resplendent as gold.

The conflict is between customary perception - how we use our eyes everyday - and aesthetic perception - how we use our eyes to draw and paint. This work explains why this conflict occurs.

Book excerpt: - Tells an evocative story of life along the Silk Road - A must-have for textile lovers - Features many previously unpublished pieces For thousands of years, the peoples of Central Asia have created spectacular textiles for every aspect of life. Infinite care, resources and time have gone into making elaborate costumes (connoting the wearer's identity and place in society), equestrian items, and exquisite furnishings for settled as well as nomadic lifestyles. Items of dress were decorated literally from top to toe: boots were embroidered with metal thread, while hats were stitched, appliquéd and felted. The women of a family would come together to embroider dazzling suzanis to form part of a bride's dowry; master dyers and weavers would craft vibrant ikat hangings. Combined, these objects tell an evocative story of life along the Silk Road in times past. This book brings together outstanding textiles from the Neville Kingston Collection, featuring many previously unpublished pieces. It is the second volume to document this exceptional English collection; Turkmen Carpets: The Neville Kingston Collection was published in 2016.

Book Fabulous Creatures from the Desert Sands

Download or read book Fabulous Creatures from the Desert Sands written by Dominik Keller and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Xinjiang Institute of Cultural and Historical Relics and Archaeology and the Xinjiang Museum established a collaborative relationship with the Abegg-Stiftung. In May 2000 the partners came to an understanding regarding publication of archaeological discoveries and joint studies. This will ensure the protection of and research into ancient textiles unearthed in Xinjiang. A communications hub for continental Eurasia, Xinjiang was the center of the ancient Silk Road, where Eastern and Western cultures met. It is also an area where well-preserved fabrics have been discovered. Sites include the tombs at Lop Nor, Wupu at Hami, Subeshi at Shanshan, Zaghunluq at Qiemo, Shanpula at Luopu, and Yingpan at Yuli. Some of the textiles unearthed at these sites date back to 2000 BC, with the most spectacular being those from the Han and Tang dynasties. These silk, wool, cotton, and linen textiles include not only products from Xinjiang, but also from the interior of China and others imported from Central and Western Asia. They allow studies of the history of spinning, weaving, and cultural exchange along the Silk Road. This volume was published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Abegg in 2001.
