Book Dance the Eagle to Sleep

Download or read book Dance the Eagle to Sleep written by Marge Piercy and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1970, Marge Piercy’s second novel follows the lives of four teenagers, in a near-future society, as they rebel against a military draft and “the system.” The occupation of Franklin High School begins, and with it, the open rebellion of America’s youth against their channeled, unrewarding lives and the self-serving, plastic society that directs them. From the disillusionment and alienation of the young at the center of the revolt, to their attempts to build a visionary new society, the nationwide following they gain and the brutally complete repression that inevitably follows, this is a future fiction without a drop of fantasy. As driving, violent, and nuanced today as it was 40 years ago, this anniversary edition includes a new introduction by the author reflecting unapologetically on the novel and the times from which it emerged.

Book To Soar with the Eagles

Download or read book To Soar with the Eagles written by Sidney Bolick and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Soar With The Eagles is the sequel to the author's first book, Mama's Boarding House, picking up where Mama's Boarding House leaves off. His new book follows his training as a pilot in the Royal canadian Air Force in 1941, and his World war II service in Europe with both the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Eighth Air Force from 1942 through 1944. Returning to the United States in November of 1944, after having been shot down on a bombing mission over Germany, being interned in Switzerland and escaping from there, he ends the war in the Air Transport Command, flying four-engine transport planes on the run from California to Hawaii and the Central Pacific Islands. This book is not about heroes, although there are certainly some heroes in it. Rather, it is about ordinary young men like the author, who, when thrust into the maelstrom of war, somehow found the courage and fortitude to face and overcome the dangers and challengess that confronted them. Students of World war II, and those simply curious about it, will find that it was not all fighting and bloodshed. For every minute spent in actual combat, there were hours and days of training and preparation. Some of the most interesting parts of this book are the author's descriptions of his training, from learning to march in step, to preparing for his first solo flight in a little Tigermoth biplane. Reading almost like a diary, To Soar With The Eagles, follows the author's footsteps from the afteerneoon in June of 1941 when he steps down from the Greyhound Bus in Ottawa, Canada, until he is discharged from thre United States Air Force in nineteen forty-six - an old veteran at the age of twenty-two.

Book excerpt: She's been called headstrong. She's been called opinionated. Hell, she's been called everything in the book, and now, in this fourth mystery in the acclaimed series, the outlaw Jesse James rides again. It's springtime in upstate New York, where the lilacs are in bloom and love is all around—even for Jessica James, full-time investigative reporter and part-time fool. Well, why shouldn't she be? Everyone else is in love: her mother, still honeymooning with the mischievous Charlie Browne; and her sometime lover, mobster Marcus Andrelli, who seems to have forgotten Jesse and taken up with another woman. For Jesse, though, love is literally in the air, with a handsome pilot named Mac Devlin. The mystery starts simply, and in Jesse's never-dull world, that's a feat. A mysterious man is shadowing Mac, and the reporter instinct in Jesse takes over. What does this stranger want, and how does it involve her mother's elusive new husband, who disappears as quickly as he appears, always with Jesse's mom in tow? Mac and Jesse team up—reluctantly at first—to find the vanished newlyweds. Together, they are drawn into a perilous and deadly game of blackmail and secrets from the past, where the high-flying stakes mean life or death.

Book excerpt: As Eagles Soar is a romantic historical fiction account of a remarkable woman. Lizzie LaBeau was born into a wealthy family in the Montgomery, Alabama, area in 1880. Her mother dies when she is a small child, and her father tries to compensate by giving Lizzie the best of everything. Her best friend for life, Clara, the daughter of former slaves, was born the same day as Lizzie. The two become inseparable, getting themselves into numerous comical predicaments. Lizzie is a gifted child, beautiful, talented, and full of life. She grows up to become a nurse, serving in both world wars. She meets many famous people along the way, including Ty Cobb, Carole Lombard, Hank Williams, Martin Luther King, Orville and Wilbur Wright, and Andy Devine, as well as numerous Alabama politicians and governors. Along with her many adventures, Lizzie falls in love with two wonderful men and meets Emma, another lifelong friend. As she nears the end of her life, she sits in a nursing home and tells her remarkable life story to a Montgomery reporter. This story embellishes the many amazing accomplishments of women throughout America during these transitional years and is based loosely on the lives of four actual women. The story covers the years 1880 through 1969, with brief glimpses back into the Creek Indian Wars and the War Between the States. Lizzie has a lifetime struggle with religion, racism, elitism, disappointing love affairs, death, war, women’s suffrage, and the change from horse and buggy to men landing on the moon. Indeed, Lizzie LaBeau lived a full life, and the reader will have a greater appreciation for what women like her have accomplished over the years. And the final chapter will tug at your heartstrings.

Book excerpt: The Eagles' Brood by Jack Whyte continues the saga of the Colony known as Camulod, and the tale of the descendants of those brave Romans who forged a new way of life for the Celt and Roman peoples when the Roman legions departed Britain. Most know the new leader of the Colony as Merlyn; all call him Commander. Cauis Merlyn Britannicus is responsible for their safety, and all look to him for guidance, leadership, justice, and salvation. It is a harsh life but a good community, and Merlyn is dedicated to spreading the influence of Roman culture beyond the Colony's borders. Uther Pendragon, the man who will father the legendary Arthur, is the cousin Merlyn has known and loved since they were birthed, four hours apart on the same day, the year the legions left Britain. He is the tireless warrior--the red dragon to Merlyn's great silver bear--and between the two of them, the Colony knows few enemies. As different as they can be, they are inseparable: two faces of the same coin. In a world torn apart by warfare and upheaval, each is the other's certainty and guarantee of the survival of the Colony . . . until a vicious crime, one that strikes at the roots of Merlyn's life, drives a wedge between them. A wedge that threatens the fate of a nation . . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40v31, NIV) You were created to be an eagle soaring with divine revelation, an athlete running races for God, and a pilgrim walking this earth on your way to a glorious future. This weekly devotional based on Isaiah 40v31explores what it means to be Gods eagle, athlete and pilgrim and interweaves with this theme the stories and testimonies of people with diverse backgrounds and from different countries. This book will inspire, encourage, exhort and teach you to view your circumstances and to live your life from a Biblical perspective. This is a fine collection of real peoples stories; their challenges, their successes and their failures, and ultimately their encounters with a gracious, powerful God who has an incredible plan for each one of us. Haide Sanchez intertwines the stories with scriptural insights and challenges in a masterful way. A serious weekly devotional that will inspire the reader to truly soar, run and walk with God. Marcus Mosey, Lancaster, England (Pastor, Christians Alive Church) This is a beautifully constructed book, with detailed and well-researched scriptural references. I believe it will be a blessing and an inspiration to the reader, and will be instrumental in bringing many closer to God. Mire Byrne, Dublin, Ireland (proof-reader and blog site moderator) This book is awesome, insightful and timely. It is one of the most interesting devotional books I have ever read especially because of the stories or testimonies of real people of our decade from a wide swathe of nations and Christian denominations. The one per week devotion is very helpful to busy people for reflection and personal application.
