Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Darkness Cometh the Light (1891) is a memoir by Lucy A. Delaney. Published in St. Louis in the last year of Delaney’s life, the work is regarded as an essential slave narrative and the only firsthand account of a freedom suit, by which some enslaved African Americans were able to achieve their freedom prior to emancipation. Twentieth century scholars of feminism and African American literature in particular have upheld her work and continue to celebrate her influence on the historical and cultural development of the nation. “On a dismal night in the month of September, Polly, with four other colored persons, were kidnapped, and, after being securely bound and gagged, were put into a skiff and carried across the Mississippi River to the city of St. Louis. Shortly after, these unfortunate negroes were taken up the Missouri River and sold into slavery.” Tracing her mother’s life back to this tragic event, Lucy A. Delaney tells a story of enslavement, hardship, and perseverance, the story of her family’s struggle for freedom. As a young woman, Polly brought two lawsuits to court in St. Louis in the hopes of freeing herself and her daughter from slavery. Following their historic victory, mother and daughter remained together as Lucy attempted to start a family of her own. Despite losing her first husband and several children from her second marriage, Lucy remained dedicated to serving God and her community as a leader in her church and president of several organizations for the empowerment of African American women. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lucy Delaney’s From the Darkness Cometh the Light is a classic of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: Lucy Ann Delaney (c. 1830-c. 1890s) was an African-American author and former slave, remembered for her inspiring 1891 narrative From the Darkness Cometh the Light; or, Struggles for Freedom, which remains virtually the only source of information regarding her life. The text takes much of its shape from slave narratives and is primarily devoted to Polly Berry's struggles to free her family. Though the story is ostensibly Delaney's, Berry remains the primary driving force and often seems to be more the protagonist than Delaney herself. The narrative is very spiritual in tone, both celebrating what Delaney sees as God's benevolent role in her own life as well as attacking the hypocrisy of Christian slave owners. Also, like many post-bellum slave narratives, From the Darkness does not so much recount the horrors of slavery as attempt to show the strength of the African-Americans who suffered them. Consequently, the narrative continues after Delaney's freedom, showing her fortitude following the death of her first husband, and later her four children. Delaney also celebrates her later political involvement, arguing for the potential of African-American citizens in American democracy.

Book excerpt: Lucy Ann Delaney was a slave in the 19th century - her shocking narrative, telling of struggles and eventual triumph over oppression, offer a poignant catalog of the horrors of slavery. Much of Lucy Delaney's memoir tells of her mother Polly's struggles to regain freedom in tandem with her daughter. The legal difficulties would see their cases drag on for years, despite Polly originally having been kidnapped from her home state of Illinois. Opportunist people smugglers of the era would commonly resort to kidnapping blacks living in the northerly states where slavery had already been made illegal. The kidnap, transport and sale of a person often took mere weeks to achieve, and usually proved highly profitable. The courts of the 1830s and 1840s were typically more concerned about the slave owner's inconveniences than the human rights of those attempting to gain freedom. The fact that Polly and Lucy Ann were a separated mother and daughter was of less concern to lawyers than the worry of depriving their owners of two slaves considered useful and well-mannered. Such stark explanations, stated simply and truthfully by the author, offer insight into a harsh and inhumane practice. Lucy Ann Delaney and her mother gained their freedom in 1842, when at last the court ruled in their favor. Thankful to God for the fortune she had escaping the nightmare of enslavement, Lucy took up work with the church and professionally as a seamstress. It was only after the urging of friends that Lucy published this retrospective in 1891, which shocked many unfamiliar with pre-emancipation USA. This edition of Lucy Ann Delaney's memoir is in large print.

Book Published by the Author

Download or read book Published by the Author written by Bryan Sinche and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publication is an act of power. It brings a piece of writing to the public and identifies its author as a person with an intellect and a voice that matters. Because nineteenth-century Black Americans knew that publication could empower them, and because they faced numerous challenges getting their writing into print or the literary market, many published their own books and pamphlets in order to garner social, political, or economic rewards. In doing so, these authors nurtured a tradition of creativity and critique that has remained largely hidden from view. Bryan Sinche surveys the hidden history of African American self-publication and offers new ways to understand the significance of publication as a creative, reformist, and remunerative project. Full of surprising turns, Sinche's study is not simply a look at genre or a movement; it is a fundamental reassessment of how print culture allowed Black ideas and stories to be disseminated to a wider reading public and enabled authors to retain financial and editorial control over their own narratives.

Book excerpt: ★★★ "…An epically Microscopic Adventure" ★★★ After the loss of his wife, inside poor Floyd Loveless’ body the Light escaping from his broken heart has caused destruction and dystopia for all his microscopic inhabitants. Viron, an evil dark virus lord dwells in the navel, reproducing in large numbers until it's time to strike the vulnerable break and vanquish any remaining Light. Eternal Darkness seems certain, when a small unsuspecting and potentially toxic B-cell on the run spots the billion-strong dark army preparing for all-out war, but can our little anti-hero raise the alarm before it's too late? Even if he does, the antibody clones he would produce to fight back could have adverse effects...the potential to turn on the Self. Join B and his companions on their fantastical wild ride as they journey all through the body with only one task in mind…to save Planet Floyd, which on a much-much larger scale, would give Floyd’s little daughter the best Christmas gift she could ever imagine…her father. Viron, believe it or not, is what actually happens to billions of new-born naïve B-Cells and T-Cells in our body and the challenges they face, which makes this story not only an exciting journey for all the family, but also educational and full of insight into the inner workings of our body on a fun, molecular level. It is truly remarkable!
