Book Security and Development in Southern Africa

Download or read book Security and Development in Southern Africa written by Nana Poku and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the end of white-dominated South Africa, many observers have argued for a positive transformation of the whole of Southern Africa based upon market integration and increased cooperation among the states of the region. Poku and the contributors to this collection re-examine this optimistic scenerio, and they point to the problems of translating good intentions into actual policies. In reality, the economic imbalance between South Africa and its neighbors poses severe problems for the region. Far from finding a stronger ally in regional reconstruction and development, the countries in the region are finding that for many in South Africa they simply do not matter that much. The analysis points to greater polarization, which may imply greater marginalization of the poorer countries in the region. Moreover, a major widening of the gap between the richer South Africa and some or all of the weaker economies may lead to increased tensions and breakdown of regional relations, even to a situation detrimental to economic development in the region. A provocative analysis by some of the leading politico-economic thinkers of the region, the volume will be of great use to scholars, researchers, and policy makers involved with Southern African development.

Book Dams Displacement and the Delusion of Development

Download or read book Dams Displacement and the Delusion of Development written by Allen F. Isaacman and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cahora Bassa Dam on the Zambezi River, built in the early 1970s during the final years of Portuguese rule, was the last major infrastructure project constructed in Africa during the turbulent era of decolonization. Engineers and hydrologists praised the dam for its technical complexity and the skills required to construct what was then the world’s fifth-largest mega-dam. Portuguese colonial officials cited benefits they expected from the dam—from expansion of irrigated farming and European settlement, to improved transportation throughout the Zambezi River Valley, to reduced flooding in this area of unpredictable rainfall. “The project, however, actually resulted in cascading layers of human displacement, violence, and environmental destruction. Its electricity benefited few Mozambicans, even after the former guerrillas of FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique) came to power; instead, it fed industrialization in apartheid South Africa.” (Richard Roberts) This in-depth study of the region examines the dominant developmentalist narrative that has surrounded the dam, chronicles the continual violence that has accompanied its existence, and gives voice to previously unheard narratives of forced labor, displacement, and historical and contemporary life in the dam’s shadow.

Book excerpt: The word Zambezi possibly more than anything else, evokes the mystery and excitement of Africa. Even today the river is poorly known, and the purity of its condition is unequalled by any other African river. characterised by vast watershed plains separating the Zambezi and Zaire basins, through the narrow belt of Szygium trees lining the upper river, to the floodplain which forms an inland river 300 km long and 50 km wide. The Zambezi emerges from the floodplain into rocky country which creates the Siona falls. Encountering basalt at Kazangula the river is disciplined as it channels through unspoilt wilderness territory before plunging 100 metres to form the Victoria Falls, and then on to the Kariba gorge where in the late 1950s it was dammed to form one of the world's largest man-made lakes. river spreads out to explore a wide flat-bottomed valley. This is the epitome of tropical Africa - hot, harsh and untamed - the domain of the wild animal. spent many months on the Zambezi filming and leading tour groups on white water adventure holidays. In the process they have amassed a large collection of colour transparencies of the river in its many guises and the people and animals that live along its banks from its source in the Angolan highlands to the swamp-like delta in Mozambique, a distance of some 3600 kilometres.

Book Crossing the Zambezi

Download or read book Crossing the Zambezi written by JoAnn McGregor and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of claims to the Zambezi, focussed on the stretch of the river extending from the Victoria Falls downstream into Lake Kariba, which today constitutes the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is a story of 150 years of conflict over the changing landscape of the river, in which the tension between the Zambezi's 'river people' and more powerful others has been central. The Zambezi is one of Africa's longest and most important rivers - securing access to its waters and control over its banks, traffic and commerce were crucial political priorities for leaders of precolonial states no less than their colonial and postcolonial successors. The book is about the ways in which the course of the Zambezi has shaped history, its shifting role as link, barrier or conduit, the political, economic and cultural uses of the technological projects that have transformed the landscape, and their legacies in the conflicts of today. By investigating how the claims made today by Zambezi 'river people' relate to longer history of claims and appropriations, the book contributes to long-standing debates over the relationship between geography and history, landscape and power.
