Book From Texture to Skid Resistance

Download or read book From Texture to Skid Resistance written by Xianhua Chen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time measurement of the tire-road friction coefficient is extremely valuable for road-maintenance operations and highway safety management. This paper presents a systematic framework to predict skid resistance of wet pavement with a non-contact method, which could be a potential approach for real-time measurements of pavement friction. The grip potential of pavement is estimated according to the measured pavement texture based on theoretical simulation of the complete hysteresis and partial adhesive effects during tire sliding on wet pavement. Such a method could be potentially used for the purpose of harmonization analysis of skid resistance and potential capability of optimization of pavement surface texture.

Book Surface Texture Classification

Download or read book Surface Texture Classification written by GR. Musgrove and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of a driver to stop on a wet pavement surface has been shown as a relationship between a tire and the pavement surface texture. For a number of years, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications has been classifying pavement surface textures and correlating these textures with the skid number of the surface, as measured by a brake-force trailer. The skid trailer number can be explained now in terms of the pavement surface texture. This paper contains a summary of the test procedure, a discussion of the texture classification system, and the relationship of the six texture parameters is discussed in terms of the equation used to generate a skid number at 100 km/h (62 mph). The advantages of using this system as a complement to present skid testing procedures are outlined, with particular attention to its use in those areas which cannot be tested by the brake-force trailer and in the area of mix design studies. The paper concludes with a discussion of some potential uses for the test method in future research work in Ontario, including the semiautomation of the interpretation procedure.

This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.

Book Engineered Cementitious Composites for Electrified Roadway in Megacities

Download or read book Engineered Cementitious Composites for Electrified Roadway in Megacities written by Ali Aryo Bawono and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the development of an innovative solution for electrified roadway pavements based on engineered cementitious composites, which are exhibiting an extreme tensile strain capacity that is much higher than conventional concrete. This enables the pavement to work without steel reinforcement and to embed a dynamic wireless power transfer technology for charging electric vehicles. At first, the book presents a modified performance-driven design approach to improve the composites to achieve the optimum pavement design in terms of functional and structural performance. It shows that the modified composites can be used to fulfil the safety and comfort factors without neglecting the characteristics of conventional ones. Further, 3D finite element and fluid dynamics models are used to analyse the pavement properties. The validated models can predict the functional performance, including skid resistance, surface water drainage, and noise. In the remaining part of the thesis, an environmentally-friendly photocatalytic function for pavement made of engineered cementitious composites is investigated. In turn, a multi-criteria design analysis is proposed to identify the optimum functional performance of the pavements. All in all, this book reports on a comprehensive approach to design, analyse and optimize engineered cementitious composites for electrified road pavement application. A special emphasis is given on applications in Singapore and other tropical megacities.

Book Skid Resistance and Road Surface Texture

Download or read book Skid Resistance and Road Surface Texture written by H. Augustin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important factor resulting from the investigation of the effects of road-surface texture characteristics on skid resistance is the technological consequences with a view to the composition of the wearing course. In the course of this work, qualitative data were obtained and evaluated, which shall later be supplemented by quantitative data, about the coefficient of friction measured with the locked wheel on the one hand and through tracings of the surfaces of cores and laboratory samples on the other hand. The tracings were carried out with a device that has a measuring accuracy of ±5 ?m and a step length of 12.5 ?m. To investigate the time-dependent changes of the road-surface texture under traffic, tests were carried out with a polishing simulator. Through the tracing of selected profiles and the statistical evaluation of the results before and after polishing, comparisons can be made with other existing systems for the measurement of the surface texture as well as prescriptions for new technological demands on materials for the construction of wearing courses. As a result of these investigations, the polishing test according to the British Standard Polished Stone Value (PSV) has been made obligatory for Austria.
