Book Syndicalism and the Transition to Communism

Download or read book Syndicalism and the Transition to Communism written by Ralph Darlington and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first two decades of the twentieth century, amidst an extraordinary international upsurge in strike action, the ideas of revolutionary syndicalism developed into a major influence within the world wide trade union movement. Committed to destroying capitalism through direct industrial action and revolutionary trade union struggle, the movement raised fundamental questions about the need for new and democratic forms of power through which workers could collectively manage industry and society. This study provides an all-embracing comparative analysis of the dynamics and trajectory of the syndicalist movement in six specific countries: France, Spain, Italy, America, Britain and Ireland. This is achieved through an examination of the philosophy of syndicalism and the varied forms that syndicalist organisations assumed; the distinctive economic, social and political context in which they emerged; the extent to which syndicalism influenced wider politics; and the reasons for its subsequent demise. The volume also provides the first ever systematic examination of the relationship between syndicalism and communism, focusing on the ideological and political conversion to communism undertaken by some of the syndicalist movement's leading figures and the degree of synthesis between the two traditions within the new communist parties that emerged in the early 1920s.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syndicalism: A Critical Examination Even in the dreaded weapon of Syndicalism, the strike, we find nothing but the ancient weapon of British trade unionism. Combinations of workmen, isolated in society, praised as our unions used to be for minding their own business and not interfering in legislation, can enforce their will only in one way. They can lay down their tools. It is, therefore, not by a servile mpying, but it is a proof of the inevita bility of certain sequences, that Syndicalism and trade unionism, with a vision narrowed to the ex perience of the workshop alone, and a field of operation confined to industrial action, should have so much in common that the former may be regarded as nothing more than a revolutionary form of the latter. Book New Forms of Worker Organization

Download or read book New Forms of Worker Organization written by Immanuel Ness and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bureaucratic labor unions are under assault. Most unions have surrendered the achievements of the mid-twentieth century, when the working class was a militant force for change throughout the world. Now trade unions seem incapable of defending, let alone advancing, workers’ interests. As unions implode and weaken, workers are independently forming their own unions, drawing on the tradition of syndicalism and autonomism—a resurgence of self-directed action that augurs a new period of class struggle throughout the world. In Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe, workers are rejecting leaders and forming authentic class-struggle unions rooted in sabotage, direct action, and striking to achieve concrete gains. This is the first book to compile workers’ struggles on a global basis, examining the formation and expansion of radical unions in the Global South and Global North. The tangible evidence marshaled in this book serves as a handbook for understanding the formidable obstacles and concrete opportunities for workers challenging neoliberal capitalism, even as the unions of the old decline and disappear.
