Book excerpt: The Communicated Stereotype: From Celebrity Vilification to Everyday Talk argues that a consequential interactional dilemma is enacted when people communicate stereotypes in everyday talk. The interactional dilemma is a result of the tension between a political correctness movement that prescribes against the communication of stereotypes and the benefits gained from communicating these in conversation. Despite the punishment and shame that befalls celebrities who communicate stereotypes, people continue to communicate stereotypes in everyday conversation often evoking little if any outrage. The Communicated Stereotype advances previous theory and research related to group categorization, stereotype maintenance and functional, discourse analytic, and critical approaches by demonstrating the process whereby the vilification of celebrities diverts attention from the everyday communication of stereotypes and emboldens people to communicate stereotypes without self-criticism. The way this interactional dilemma is handled in conversation helps to explain why stereotypes are maintained over time within a culture despite deterrents intended to dissuade people from using them. An appreciation of stereotypes as poor communication choices provides the potential for the reduction of stereotype use.

Warren Shibles' Metaphor: An Annotated Bibliography and History (Bloomington, Ind. 1971) recorded the initial interest. Then Metaphor: A Bibliography of Post-1970 Publications, published by John Benjamins, continued the record through the mania years up to 1985 when writings proliferated as metaphor was seen to be a fundamental category in human thought and language. Five years later, there is a need for a report on the newest thinking and tendencies in the field. This need is fulfilled by Metaphor II which offers a comprehensive view of information which would otherwise remain scattered throughout a numbing plethora of resources, including many sometimes-hard-to-find publications from Eastern Europe. Metaphor II systematically collects references of books, articles and papers published between 1985 and May 1990, and includes for completeness corrections and additions to the earlier bibliographies. Abstracts are given for many of the titles, while four indices (disciplines, semantic fields, metaphor theory and names) multiply the number of access points to the information.

It radically shifts familiar colonial stereotypes of the feminized, racialized cottier according to the Irish peasantry's subversive entanglement with nonhuman materiality. Each of the chapters engages a focused case study of an everyday object in colonial Ireland (coins, flax, spinning wheels, mud, and pigs) to examine how each object's unique materiality contributed to the colonial ideology of British paternalism and afforded creative Irish expression. The main argument of Irish Materialisms is its methodology: of reading literature through the agency of materiality and nonhuman narrative in order to gain a more egalitarian and varied understanding of colonial experience. In this context, by using Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory (CMT), this study uncovers the broad spectrum of the mentally ills’ experiences, a relatively undertheorised area in medical humanities. The aim is to demonstrate that mentally ill people are often represented as either grotesquely exaggerated or overly romanticised across diverse media and biomedical discourses. Further, they have been disparaged as emotionally drained and unreasonable individuals, incapable of active social engagements and against the healthy/sane society. The study also aims to unsettle the sanity/insanity binary and its related patterns of fixed categories of normal/abnormal, which depersonalise the mentally ill by critically analysing seven graphic narratives on mental illness.

Book excerpt: Metaphorical expressions not only appear in poetic texts of the Old Testament but also in legal texts. In particular, they appear in the preambles to collections of laws, in their final summaries, in more general considerations on compliance with and violation of the law, in texts concerning the meaning of the law, dealing with topics that are now dealt with in law theory or law philosophy. Metaphorical expressions usually reveal how the authors of the relevant Torah / Law texts understood their function in society, in culture. They testify to the place of the Torah / Law in the system of values, about what society preferred in the law. The following monograph is a contribution to the scholarly debate, which is methodologically anchored in cognitive and culturally oriented linguistics. Its focus is to investigate Hebrew metaphorical expressions concerning one of the key Old Testament concept Torah / Law. The author focuses on the identification of Hebrew conceptual metaphors and on the explanation of the meaning of the respective metaphorical expressions. Another area in which the use of cognitive linguistic analyses and the interpretation of metaphorical expressions has proven to be very effective is in the area of translation. The third chapter of this book is given to look at modern translations of selected metaphorical expressions into modern Czech and English. Another possible application of cognitive linguistic analyses of metaphorical expressions in the semantic field Law is represented by the final case study. The study brings the results of cognitive semantic analyses of the didactic human rights material Compass: Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People with regard to the metaphors used to conceptualize the concept of human rights.
