Due to the inhumanity of slavery, Bond's exact birth year is not known, outside from being sometime in the early 1850s. Despite the intolerable cruelties Bond faced, he went on to become a high powered farmer and entrepreneur. He was extremely highly regarded both locally, and nationally for his skilled business acumen. He was selected to represent the National Negro Business League. Sadly, in 1933, Bond was killed by one of his bulls. At the time of his passing, he owned and farmed 12,000 acres, plus livestock, ran a large mercantile store, a gravel pit, lumber yard, saw mill and at least five cotton gins. Biographer Daniel Arthur Rudd was a highly esteemed activist, author, founder of the Black Catholic Congress Movement, and editor and publisher of The American Catholic Tribune. He accomplished a great deal despite having been born into slavery in 1854 in Bardstown, Kentucky. By 1866, Rudd was emancipated and receiving an education while living in Springfield, Illinois. He worked as an accountant for Scott Bond. The book is co-authored with Theophilus Bond, who was Scott Bond's second born son.

Olaudah Equiano's interesting story provides an insight into a time and situation that few people survived to record or recall, and those that did survive were rarely literate. For this reason, and so many others, Equiano (or Gustavus Vassa as he was later christened) has a unique story to tell. It is an honest and chilling account of a man born free in Africa and sold into slavery, who spends most of life on the high seas until he finally acquires freedom. He relates the experiences of black people in its myriad forms on three continents. 5. Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl, Seven Years Concealed. In the pre-civil war period of 1861, Harriet Jacobs was the only black woman in the United States to have authored her own slave narrative, in a call to "arouse the women of the North to a realizing sense of the condition of two millions of women at the South...to convince the people of the Free States what slavery really is." Jacobs hoped that, should the white women of the North know the true conditions of the slave women of the South, they would not fail to answer the call to moral action. With the help of a northern abolitionist, Jacobs published this astounding, poignant record under the pseudonym Linda Brent. 6. Up From Slavery: An Autobiography. Booker T. Washington writes his story modestly but his greatness shines through. He spent his early childhood as a slave on a plantation in the south, but after the Emancipation Proclamation was read from the porch steps of the "Big House," his ambitions to gain an education and make something of himself propelled him through every obstacle to his goal. Booker T. Washington was a tireless promoter of education for his race and founded a school for blacks in Alabama. He made great strides in elevating the sights and prospects of his people. 7. Running A Thousand Miles for Freedom. This is a great story of a married couple who were slaves and escaped to freedom in a unique way. It is a horrifying account of the evil of slavery and the hope of freedom and human rights. A compelling read.

Douglass is separated from his mother, Harriet Bailey, soon after he is born. His father is most likely their white master, Captain Anthony. Captain Anthony is the clerk of a rich man named Colonel Lloyd. Lloyd owns hundreds of slaves, who call his large, central plantation the "Great House Farm." Life on any of Lloyd's plantations, like that on many Southern plantations, is brutal. Slaves are overworked and exhausted, receive little food, few articles of clothing, and no beds. Those who break rules-and even those who do not-are beaten or whipped, and sometimes even shot by the plantation overseers, the cruelest of which are Mr. Severe and Mr. Austin Gore. Douglass's life on this plantation is not as hard as that of most of the other slaves. Being a child, he serves in the household instead of in the fields. At the age of seven, he is given to Captain Anthony's son-in-law's brother, Hugh Auld, who lives in Baltimore. In Baltimore, Douglass enjoys a relatively freer life. In general, city slave-owners are more conscious of appearing cruel or neglectful toward their slaves in front of their non-slaveowning neighbors.
