Download or read book The House on Middle Street written by JOHN L. BISOL and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another of the houses that defined my life. These are the stories behind the House on Middle Street and how a large part of my mother's family shaped my own history. Each story tells more than the obvious. There is always a "background" that is so much more than what others see. There is (also) courage needed to record the struggles, joys, hurts, frustrations, fears, and (perhaps) regrets in the context in which they happened. The joy and sadness of a true family history will be lost forever if we do not write or tell our stories.
Download or read book The Cathedral open and Free written by Alex Bruce and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets the work of Frank Selwyn Macaulay Bennett, Dean of Chester 1920–37, in context, and traces the influence on other cathedrals of the changes he instituted at Chester. His earlier work as parish priest and his interrelated writings on theology and on education, health, and ecumenism are examined for the light they shed on his practice. Despite the efforts of his predecessors, Bennett found Chester Cathedral in need of much repair and renovation if it were to match his ideal and fulfill the purpose he had in mind for it. In the early twentieth century Anglican cathedrals in England were generally perceived as remote and unwelcoming places and of interest mainly to antiquarians seeking to inspect their monuments; admission charges were levied on visitors. Frank Bennett changed all this. In 1920, he promptly declared Chester Cathedral "open and free"; he would lock up nothing except the safe. "Visitors" now became "pilgrims", whose voluntary offerings rapidly surpassed the sums previously raised by compulsory entry charges. By the time he retired in 1937, the Cathedral’s finances were in credit; the fabric of the church and adjoining monastic buildings had been repaired, renovated, and developed, and all were fully in use, as Bennett had planned in 1920.

Download or read book The Words and Music of Paul McCartney written by Vincent P. Benitez Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-03-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of the solo music of Paul McCartney, from 1970-2007, offers an analysis of his songs, recordings, and his impact on popular music. The Words and Music of Paul McCartney: The Solo Years examines the large and varied oeuvre of this deeply personal artist, showing how McCartney's stint as a Beatle continues to inform his solo music, as well as how he has transcended his days as a member of the Fab Four. After a biographical introduction, chronologically arranged chapters explore McCartney's music in the immediate aftermath of the breakup of the Beatles, his work with Wings during the 1970s, his collaborations with other artists during the 1980s, and his compositions of the 1990s, including his first forays into classical music. The examination also covers McCartney's critically acclaimed work in the first decade of the 21st century, including Memory Almost Full and Ecce Cor Meum, a composition written in the style of sacred English choral music. Throughout, the book supplies analytical insights and historical background to a repertoire that, surprisingly, has not previously been covered in detail.

Book excerpt: Since 1956 when Ontario’s historical plaquing program was begun, more than 1,000 markers have been erected throughout the province. The range of subjects commemorated is astonishing – from mining rushes in northern Ontario to the invention of the socket-head screw ... from Harold Innis to Stephen Leacock ... from the typhus epidemic of 1847 to the discovery of insulin. Popular culture is also well represented: "Beautiful Joe" commemorates an internationally successful novel about a dog; "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" celebrates a famous romantic ballad; "Jumbo" marks the spot where a beloved circus elephant died. The history of Ontario, like its geography and its people, is vast and varied. Whenever you drive the highways, hike the countryside, or stroll through your own neighbourhood, this book can be a guide. There is much to discover.
