Download or read book From Shamrock to Springbok written by Christine Meyrick and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine was born into a dysfunctional Protestant family in 1951 in Bangor, Northern Ireland. At the height of the ‘Troubles’ in 1969, after completing her basic education, she worked for a year in bomb-riddled Belfast before deciding to emigrate to South Africa, a country tyrannised by the Apartheid government and simmering with racial tension. Christine arrived in South Africa as a naïve nineteen-year-old, saddened by having to leave Ireland and blissfully unaware that she was entering a country not without its own ‘Troubles’. This is the extraordinary story of an ordinary person who lived through the political storms of two countries, whose dysfunctional family left her with emotional demons to conquer, who was a single mother to her daughter, and who faced such unexpected situations that one only usually reads about them in books. Christine still lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is in regular touch with her family in Northern Ireland. She now has a granddaughter. She is an avid gardener and grows many of her own vegetables. She loves yoga, a practice she has kept up for many years and she feels close to.

Download or read book The Fighting Irish written by Tim Newark and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tim Newark's The Fighting Irish uses the dramatic words of the soldiers themselves to tell their stories, gathered from diaries, letters, journals, and interviews with veterans in Ireland and across the world. "Tells the story of the Irish fighting man with wit, clarity, and scholarship." —Andrew Roberts, author of The Storm of War For hundreds of years, Irish soldiers have sought their destiny abroad. Wherever they've traveled, whichever side of the battlefield they've stood, the tales of their exploits have never been forgotten. Leaving his birthplace, the Irish soldier has traveled with hope, often seeking to bring a liberating revolution to his fellow countrymen. In search of adventure the Fighting Irish have been found in all corners of the world. Some sailed to America and joined in frontier fighting, others demonstrated their loyalty to their adopted homeland in the bloody combats of the American Civil War, as well as campaigns against the British Empire in Canada and South Africa. The Irish soldier can also be found in the thick of war during the twentieth century—facing slaughter at the Somme, desperate last-stands in the Congo—and, more recently, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Download or read book The Boer War written by Fred R. van Hartesveldt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-05-30 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.
