Book From Rulership to Leadership in the Arab World

Download or read book From Rulership to Leadership in the Arab World written by Khalid Abdulla-Janahi and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief memoir recounts the journey of a man and lessons he accumulated on leadership by observing and questioning the status quo, and asking the penultimate question of why, from his childhood home in the small island of Bahrain, to his formative years as a student and professional in England, to his adulthood as a business leader, philanthropist, influencer and family man. The book’s key observation is that there is an excess of rulership while leadership is almost always in deficit. The book questions how we can move from one to the other, which examples can we rely on in every sphere of our lives and how transformative more leadership would be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ten years since Anchor first published Elizabeth and Robert Fernea's award-winning The Arab World: Personal Encounters, vast political and economic shifts have taken place: the end of the Iran/Iraq War and the Lebanese civil war; the outbreak of the Gulf War; the historic 1993 peace accords between Israel and the Palestinians, to name just a few. Which is why the Ferneas, leading scholars in Middle Eastern studies, felt a need to return to the same towns and cities they had written about previously-to see how these changes had affected the region and the people who live in it. The authors reveal the human face of the Arab World as they revisit and talk with newsmakers and colleagues, old friends and new. Their forty years of experience in the region help illuminate the human consequences of changes all too often discussed in abstractions and generalizations: the military conflicts, new urbanization, labor migration, religious revival, as well as radical changes in the roles of men, women, and the family. With new chapters on Baghdad, Beirut, Amman, Jerusalem, Marrakech, and Cairo, this new edition of The Arab World will strengthen its reputation as a book "which should be required reading for anyone with a serious interest in the Middle East" (The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs).

Book Out of the Middle East

Download or read book Out of the Middle East written by Kamal A. Shair and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kamal Shair's book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was born in a small town in what was then Transjordan and dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. Dar al Handasah - Arabic for House of Engineers - was founded in a small flat in Beirut and today, spans the globe with offices in 37 countries. In its early years, Dar al Handasah fought off competition from established western consultancies to win contracts for prestige engineering throughout the Middle East. Eventually, its activities extended further to Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia. By not following the usual pattern of patronage and favours, Kamal Shair applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with a loosely-structured business ethic. In the process, he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the most dramatic events of the modern Arab world. This is quite an extraordinary tale and a very original prism through which to read the turbulent post-World War II history of the Middle East. At the same time we see the growth, despite all the odds, of one of the world's great engineering and business enterprises in a narrative of epic and inspirational proportions."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Book Constructing International Relations in the Arab World

Download or read book Constructing International Relations in the Arab World written by Fred Lawson and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence of an anarchic states-system in the twentieth-century Arab world. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Arab nationalist movements first considered establishing a unified regional arrangement to take the empire's place and present a common front to outside powers. But over time different Arab leaderships abandoned this project and instead adopted policies characteristic of self-interested, territorially limited states. In his explanation of this phenomenon, the author shifts attention away from older debates about the origins and development of Arab nationalism and analyzes instead how different nationalist leaderships changed the ways that they carried on diplomatic and strategic relations. He situates this shift in the context of influential sociological theories of state formation, while showing how labor movements and other forms of popular mobilization shaped the origins of the regional states-system.

Book Socio Political Order and Security in the Arab World

Download or read book Socio Political Order and Security in the Arab World written by Andreas Krieg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the connection between socio-politics and security in the Arab World. In an effort to understand the social and political developments that have been on-going in the Arab World since the 1990s, culminating in the Arab Spring, Krieg moves beyond liberal deterministic assumptions - most notably that the promotion of liberal values and democracy are the panacea for the structural problems of the region. Instead, this text advances the case that grievances related to individual security needs are at the heart of regional insecurity and instability. Looking towards the future, the author asserts that regimes can only be resilient if they are able to provide for individual security inclusively. When regimes fail to cater for public security, they might be replaced by alternative non-state security providers.

Book The Third Arab Israeli War

Download or read book The Third Arab Israeli War written by George S. Hajjar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union penetration of the Third World challenged the supremacy of the United States in the bipolar system, which emerged as a result of the Second World War and manifested itself in the formation of the nonalignment movement in the Third World. The challenge was confronted successfully in the weak link of nonalignment in the Middle East where Israel represented the battle carrier of the West and its sentinel in the area. Israel waged counterrevolutionary war against the frontline Arab states: Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, and defeated them ignominiously. A revolutionary resistance movement erupted and ushered in a new era of possible transformation through peoples armed struggle. However, the Arab regimes used the resistance as a tactic, not a strategy, and suppressed it on the eve of Nassers death on September 28, 1970. Consequently, Egypt and Syria launched the October 6 War of 1974, and Egypt reached a modus operandi that paved the way to an Israeli-Egyptian peace. The book was written focusing on the period 19671974 as a reminding view that without liberation principally based on a strategy of armed struggle, there is no prospect for an Arab future outside the Wests ambit and its attempts at redrawing new maps and forming alliances with Western designs and dominating strategies and interests. Briefly, in an age of compelling regionalism, the West still bludgeons the Arabs and aims at their divisions and redivision in the first hundred anniversary of the Belfour Declaration of November 2, 1917. It looks forward to conclude an Israeli-Gulf accord to perpetuate Arab dismemberment and incite sectarian war endlessly.

Book The A to Z of the Druzes

Download or read book The A to Z of the Druzes written by Samy Swayd and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Druzes are one of the smallest, least studied, and most esoteric religious communities in the Middle East. This is because the Druze teachings remain inaccessible not only to outsiders but also to uninitiated members within the Druze community itself. Furthermore, proselytizing_inducing someone to convert to one's own religious faith_has been prohibited since the establishment of the sect in the 11th century. In order to resist assimilation by the various empires and colonial powers that sought to dominate them_the Byzantines, various Arab dynasties, the Mamluks and Ottomans, the British and French, in addition to the nations that govern them_the Druzes disguise and conceal their beliefs. Therefore, not much is known by outsiders about the Druzes. This dictionary provides nearly 1,000 concise and informative cross-referenced A to Z entries on religious, political, and cultural themes, as well as entries on a number of major families and individuals (artists, writers, diplomats, and leaders) who have contributed to the Druze communities. This volume is also complemented with a chronology, an introductory essay, and a bibliography.
