Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed discussion of the initial enthusiasm triggered by the discovery of x-rays and radioactive radiation which later turned into fear and repulsion in a significant part of the global population up to the 21st century. After a historical review, the author discusses the effect of ionizing radiation on living cells, tissues and organisms. He then describes the relationship between the dose of radiation and the effect it produces. He shows how the dose-effect dependence is measured and what models of describing such dependences are used. He also discusses how radiation acts on living organisms: disorders in the genetic apparatus, mutation formation and so on. The book also includes detailed descriptions of the results of numerous health studies of large groups of people who, for one reason or another, were exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation, including those that significantly exceed the natural radiation background. The author concludes that low doses of radiation are safe and can even be beneficial (as known from medical radiation treatment); and also that the natural radiation background is necessary for the normal growth and development and well-being of a living organism. The author also discusses cases and effects of large doses, arguing, however, that dangerous doses of radiation are very unlikely. This book challenges radio-phobia. It not only offers arguments helping to overcome an unreasonable fear but, based on the latest understanding of science, argues to gradually move back, not to the former radio-euphoria, but to a new, conscious attitude towards radiation.

School being that outlet that provides a platform to adamantly present to the world, as they know it, a catharsis of grander and emotional joy one thinks will result in an elevated sense of elation in the people she will engage for years to come. The initial excitement of such sharing will, for many, carry over to be the impetus, of the great ones. Those who will entertain the world with the genius of their writing, the inspiration of their music. There are others that introduce the world to new and fascination dynamics because scientific discoveries, and their ability to collect available resources and ascertain profound ways in which to utilize those resource. The mind itself being the apex of such resource and intelligence. I am sure that my collection of thought is compilation from the stages of my life that resulted in untapped empirical knowledge and thought. I think I became truly infatuated with written expression at a very young age, during the time when the record company Motown was at its peak. The great Paul Anka wrote a lyric that sent me for a loop. He wrote that "memories are times that we barrow to use when we get to tomorrow." Where will the world be if discerning people stop sharing their thoughts...where will the world be if we all stop or refuse to share our emotional excitement and the gifts of joy that they have encountered. What a better way to do so in written expression!

RFE-RL had its origins in a post-war America brimming with confidence and secure in its power. Unlike the Voice of America, which conveyed a distinctly American perspective on global events, RFE-RL served as surrogate home radio services and a vital alternative to the controlled, party-dominated domestic press in Eastern Europe. Over twenty stations featured programming tailored to individual countries. They reached millions of listeners ranging from industrial workers to dissident leaders such as Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel. Broadcasting Freedom draws on rare archival material and offers a penetrating insider history of the radios that helped change the face of Europe. Arch Puddington reveals new information about the connections between RFE-RL and the CIA, which provided covert funding for the stations during the critical start-up years in the early 1950s. He relates in detail the efforts of Soviet and Eastern Bloc officials to thwart the stations; their tactics ranged from jamming attempts, assassinations of radio journalists, the infiltration of spies onto the radios' staffs, and the bombing of the radios' headquarters. Puddington addresses the controversies that engulfed the stations throughout the Cold War, most notably RFE broadcasts during the Hungarian Revolution that were described as inflammatory and irresponsible. He shows how RFE prevented the Communist authorities from establishing a monopoly on the dissemination of information in Poland and describes the crucial roles played by the stations as the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union broke apart.
