Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Outlaw to Classic presents a sweeping history of the forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, the American poetry canon. Students, scholars, critics, and poets will welcome this enlightening and impressively documented book. Recent writings by critics and theorists on literary canons have dealt almost exclusively with prose; Alan Golding shows that, like all canons, those of American poetry are characterized by conflict. Choosing a series of varied but representative instances, he analyzes battles and contentions among poets, anthologists, poetry magazine editors, and schools of thought in university English departments. The chapters: • present a history of American poetry anthologies • compare competing models of canon-formation, the aesthetic (poet-centered) and the institutional (critic-centered) • discuss the influence of the New Critics, emphasizing their status as practicing poets, their anti-nationalist reading of American poetry, and the landmark textbook, Understanding Poetry by Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren • examine the canonizing effects of an experimental “little magazine,” Origin • trace how the Language poets address, in both their theory and their method, the canonizing institutions and canonical assumptions of the age.

Book Outlaw Tales of the Old West Fifty True Stories of Desperados Crooks Criminals and Bandits

Download or read book Outlaw Tales of the Old West Fifty True Stories of Desperados Crooks Criminals and Bandits written by Erin H. Turner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifty outlaw tales includes well-knowns such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Frank and Jesse James, Belle Starr (and her dad), and Pancho Villa, along with a fair smattering of women, organized crime bosses, smugglers, and of course the usual suspects: highwaymen, bank and train robbers, cattle rustlers, snake-oil salesmen, and horse thieves. Men like Henry Brown and Burt Alvord worked on both sides of the law either at different times of their lives or simultaneously. Clever shyster Soapy Smith and murderer Martin Couk survived by their wits, while the outlaw careers of the dimwitted DeAutremont brothers and bigmouthed Diamondfield Jack were severely limited by their intellect, or lack thereof. Nearly everyone in these pages was motivated by greed, revenge, or a lethal mixture of the two. The most bloodthirsty of the bunch, such as the heartless (and, some might argue, soulless) Annie Cook and trigger-happy Augustine Chacón, surely had evil written into their very DNA.

Book The Story of the Outlaw

Download or read book The Story of the Outlaw written by Emerson Hough and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Outlaw: A Study of the Western Desperado As for the subject-matter of the following work, it may be stated that, while attention has been paid to the great and well-known instances and epochs of outlawry, many of the facts given have not previously found their way into print. The story of the Lincoln County War of the Southwest is given truthfully for the first time, and after full acquaintance with sources of information now inaccessible or passing away. The Stevens County War of Kansas, which took place, as it were, but yesterday and directly at our doors, has had no history but a garbled one; and as much might be said of many border encounters whose chief use heretofore has been to curdle the blood in penny-dreadfuls. Accu racy has been sought among the confusing statements purporting to constitute the record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlaw: An Historical Romance The last month of spring was passing, and the warm breath and genial influence of summer were shortly to be heralded by the blithe and bonny May. Those who wrote, dated the year 1688 a period of deep and exciting, and now of immortal, interest, in our nation's history. At the time our narrative commences, the second James had just been compelled to submit to an investigation touching the legitimacy of his son; but with history, or historical personages, we have at present little to do, our details being devoted chiefly to private individuals and private events. Book The Story of the Outlaw a Study of the Western Desperado

This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of the Outlaw A Study of the Western Desperado by Emerson Hough In offering this study of the American desperado, the author constitutes himself no apologist for the acts of any desperado; yet neither does he feel that apology is needed for the theme itself. The outlaw, the desperado-that somewhat distinct and easily recognizable figure generally known in the West as the "bad man"-is a character unique in our national history, and one whose like scarcely has been produced in any land other than this. It is not necessary to promote absurd and melodramatic impressions regarding a type properly to be called historic, and properly to be handled as such. The truth itself is thrilling enough, and difficult as that frequently has been of discovery, it is the truth which has been sought herein. The pain in her eyes was acute, and she felt sick with it. Her feet were sodden with snow and numb with cold, for she had only taken thin shoes away with her. Luckily she felt wide awake, and when she heard the door again a quiver of hope set her pulses beating fiercely. The pain beat with them, but her will over-rode it, and when she saw her husband she faced him. He stood there silent and implacable. Book The Legalized Outlaw Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Legalized Outlaw Classic Reprint written by Samuel R. Artman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Legalized Outlaw In all governmental affairs, the people occupy the position of sovereign they are the principal, and those, who are entrusted with the functions of administration, whether in a judicial, legisla tive or executive capacity, are merely their agents, with certain limited powers. The agent can never become superior to the principal. Upon judicial, legislative and executive matters, involving questions of principle, the people them selves constitute the supreme and ultimate tribunal, to whom such matters must be finally submitted, and by whom, at last, they shall be determined. It is not the province of courts to determine principles, but cases. A trial court, in a matter from which there is no appeal, always determines a case, while, in appealable cases, it determines cases, subject to review by a higher court. In other words, a court of last resort always determines cases, but not questions or principles. In deter mining cases, courts must apply principles, and, hence, in order to rightly decide the case, the court should have a correct understanding of the principles. The people have placed the determination of cases beyond their control; they have confided this matter absolutely to the courts; but not so as to principles, for, as to them, they have reserved unto themselves the power of final settlement.
