Book Soul Survivor

Download or read book Soul Survivor written by Andrea Leininger and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2009-08-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Leininger was just two years old when he began having disturbing nightmares that would not stop. He screamed out in the night: 'Plane on fire! Little man can't get out!' While nightmares are common among children, what happened next shocked those around him... James began to reveal details of planes and war tragedies that no two-year-old boy could know. His desperate parents were at a loss to help him until he said three things: 'Corsair', 'Natoma' and 'Jack Larsen'. From these tantalising clues, James's parents travelled thousands of miles and spent many long years piecing together these facts to try and find an answer that could end his torment. Finally, despite his mother's fears and his father's staunch Christian beliefs, they found only one possibility to the endless coincidences that surrounded every detail in James's life – that their son was reliving the past life of a World War II fighter pilot. Their touching story is one that will challenge sceptics and confirm the beliefs of those who already believe in life after death.

In 2020, we were all looking for solutions and this book was right on time. It is one we should all be reading." —Anita Hill "This standout memoir marks a crucial moment in the discussion of what constitutes a violent crime." —Publishers Weekly, Best Books of 2020 She Said meets Know My Name in Michelle Bowdler's provocative debut, telling the story of her rape and recovery while interrogating why one of society's most serious crimes goes largely uninvestigated. The crime of rape sizzles like a lightning strike. It pounces, flattens, destroys. A person stands whole, and in a moment of unexpected violence, that life, that body is gone. Award-winning writer and public health executive Michelle Bowdler's memoir indicts how sexual violence has been addressed for decades in our society, asking whether rape is a crime given that it is the least reported major felony, least successfully prosecuted, and fewer than 3% of reported rapes result in conviction. Cases are closed before they are investigated and DNA evidence sits for years untested and disregarded Rape in this country is not treated as a crime of brutal violence but as a parlor game of he said / she said. It might be laughable if it didn’t work so much of the time. Given all this, it seems fair to ask whether rape is actually a crime. In 1984, the Boston Sexual Assault Unit was formed as a result of a series of break-ins and rapes that terrorized the city, of which Michelle’s own horrific rape was the last. Twenty years later, after a career of working with victims like herself, Michelle decides to find out what happened to her case and why she never heard from the police again after one brief interview. Is Rape a Crime? is an expert blend of memoir and cultural investigation, and Michelle's story is a rallying cry to reclaim our power and right our world.

Book Survivor Transitional Narratives of Nazi Era Destruction

Download or read book Survivor Transitional Narratives of Nazi Era Destruction written by Dennis B. Klein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survivor Transitional Narratives of Nazi-Era Destruction: The Second Liberation examines the historical circumstances that gave rise in the 1960s to the first cohort of Nazi-era survivors who massed a public campaign focusing on remembrance of Nazi racial crimes. The survivors' decision to engage and disquiet a public audience occurred against the backdrop of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial and the West German debate over the enforcement of statutory limitations for prosecuting former Nazis. Dennis B. Klein focuses on the accounts of three survivors: Jean Améry, an Austrian ex-patriot who joined the Belgian Resistance during the war, Vladimir Jankélévitch, a member of the French Resistance, and Simon Wiesenthal, who dedicated his life after the war to investigating Nazi crimes. As Klein argues, their accounts, in addition to acting as a reminder of Nazi-era endemic criminality, express a longing for human fellowshipThis contextual and interdisciplinary interpretation illustrates the explanatory significance of contemporary events and individual responses to them in shaping the memory and legacy of Nazi-era destruction. It is essential reading for students and scholars of the Nazi era and its legacy, genocide studies, Jewish Studies, and the history of emotions.

Book The Pretty Pink Ribbon A Breast Cancer Survivor s Hurricane Katrina Experience

Download or read book The Pretty Pink Ribbon A Breast Cancer Survivor s Hurricane Katrina Experience written by Joyce Washington Ivery and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pretty Pink Ribbon: A Breast Cancer Survivor's Hurricane Katrina Experience By: Joyce Washington Ivery The author was inspired to write this book as a result of her horrific experiences during hurricane Katrina. In March, 1989, Joyce Washington Ivery was diagnosed with breast cancer. One year later she had a saline implant placed in her chest cavity. The implant was removed in August, 2005, fifteen years later, and replaced with a tummy flap. While in the hospital, hurricane Katrina came along with its forceful winds and flooding waters. Joyce was all alone and forced to spend one night in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Amidst the thousands of people there, she and her cousin crossed paths; and he and his family drove her to Natchez, MS, September 1, 2005, where she has lived since that time. The challenges of salvaging whatever possible and moving to a new city and state were stupendous but not surmountable. In 1994, she organized Edna B. and Joyce Fay Washington Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. And on May 25, 2019, the Foundation convened its Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LAin celebration of twenty-five (25) years of service. The very first program organized by the Foundation was a support group – Sisters In Touch – which to this day still exists. Eighteen of the survivors who are actively involved shared their thoughts about how the group has positively affected their lives. Preceding each of the twelve chapters is heartfelt, descriptive poetry; beginning with “The Pretty Pink Ribbon” and ending with “Eight Forty Six”.
